3 Tailgate problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/20/2021

On two occasions, one stationary, one in motion, the tailgate will come unlatched. I have the automatic tailgate without the foot activated sensors. When stationary the door will not latch even though it looks all the way closed. The horn will chirp twice telling me a door is open and that's the only way I know it's not closed. While driving the door does not open all the way, but I will get a warning in the gauge cluster telling me the tailgate is open. It doesn't open all the way. I have only experienced it one time while in motion at low speeds, less than 40 mph, and I pulled over safely. To fix the problem I have to stand behind the tailgate when it's closing and push the door closed. The vehicle has never been in an accident either.

6 Tailgate problem of the 2016 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/17/2019

The tailgate is not closing or opening properly. It took me over 1. 5 hrs to get the door completely shut. I has happened a few other times and I know am scared to use it. I don't want to be stuck with the door unable to shut, resulting in my battery being drained & getting stuck somewhere because the tailgate won't shut. I looked online and it seems I am not at all the only person who has had this issue!.

9 Tailgate problem of the 2018 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

Back electric tailgate does not close completely. This is indicated by the horn double honking when locking the vehicle. However, there is no indicator on the dash when the car is on that this is not fully latched. I believe this could lead to exhaust in the cabin, especially if idling.

11 Tailgate problem of the 2016 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/14/2017

Vehicle statistics: stationary, not in motion, in parking lot. Fault/problem: unanticipated, unintentional, erratic and errant closure of automatic liftgate. Cause of safety risk: poorly positioned/calibrated sensor which triggers automatic closure of rear liftgate in spite of following owners manual instructions. This feature is only supposed to be activated when making a forward and back kicking motion of the foot under the rear bumper. Summary: was loading groceries into back of vehicle at local wal-mart evening of 03/14/17 approx. 6:30 p. M. Cst. I had leaned over placing bags into cargo area of vehicle, feet were together on ground behind rear bumper, I straightened and smashed my head into the metal flat edge of the liftgate which was coming down on it's own without me pressing buttons or making gesture to initiate autoclose feature. Audible notice of closure wasn't heard due to ambient noise - wind, etc (the notice noise is extremely quiet). I hit the tailgate hard enough that I nearly knocked myself out, and my wife who had already gotten into the passenger seat felt the vehicle move and heard a loud noise from my head making contact with the liftgate. I collected myself, finished loading the groceries and went home. Pain in my head increased, neck pain presented and increased in intensity, nausea and sensitivity to light. Wife recommended and transported me to er. Er visit initiated approximately 8:30 p. M. At time of triage, I was dry heaving and was given an anti-nausea medication. The er doctor ordered a CT of my head based on symptoms present which came back ok, but it was determined I received a concussion and was prescribed medications appropriately. Headache and neck pain/stiffness are persistent today 03/15/16. Will follow-up with primary care physician as instructed within 48-72 hours. Before making this info public, please remove attachment.

12 Tailgate problem of the 2015 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/07/2016

On two separate occasions, the automatic tailgate has closed on me while loading groceries into my trunk. Both times I extended a hand to try and stop it but both times it continued to close and hit me in the head. The second time was on April 7, 2016. It hit me hard enough to give me a concussion and trigger a migraine that lasted 4 days. I had to be prescribed medication and missed work. The gate should not close automatically like this. There needs to be better sensors to prevent injury. I have found posts online from other people who have had similar experiences. I took the car to my Ford dealer who opened and closed the liftgate several times and told me it was fine. I bet the grocery store has video footage of one or both incidents.

16 Tailgate problem of the 2004 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/28/2014

A rattling from rear passenger wheel area. Upon investigation to see what it was I found that the upper connection point of the shock tower was completely rusted through and was barely connected to the rest of the body. Within a day or two afterwards the upper part had completely seperated and the shock was bouncing around freely. I removed the shock yesterday (5/1/2014) as it had pushed up (since it has no resistance or means to hold it compressed) and punched a hole through the plastic interior side wall liner in the tailgate area. There is now an aproximatly 10" square hole in the side of my vehicle where I can see the tire and road. I will need to seal the opening to keep road water from entering. Photos can be provided.

17 Tailgate problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/11/2014

Vehicle was parked in my driveway. This happened at about 10:30 a. M. I had removed some items in the rear of the vehicle and then shut the rear tailgate. The rear tailgate glass had not be opened and was closed as usual on the liftgate. The liftgate was closed in the normal fashion. I was in the process of walking away from the car after closing the tailgate when the rear tailgate glass exploded. Nothing had struck the glass from either the inside or outside to cause this to happen. I received some minor scratches on my hand. The glass exploded as far as 6-8' behind and to the sides of the vehicle as well as all over the interior of the vehicle.

It seemed as if the reciprocating arms perhaps did not collapse completely and went through the window. An individual who assisted in cleaning up the debris was cut by the glass.

21 Tailgate problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/29/2012

I shut my tailgate and the rear window shattered on my 2010 Ford Escape. No one was injured, but it definitely made a huge mess and it was a shock to have this happen. This is the second issue my vehicle has had this year. A few months ago the throttle control went on the vehicle. Both not covered by Ford, due to the warranty over. I have many concerns that a two year old vehicle could have these type of things going wrong with it. My other concern is Ford won't acknowledge these issues with recalls and many of my fellow Ford owners are having the same issues. Please check into this for us. Can say I definitely won't be buying Ford again after this.

22 Tailgate problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/11/2012

23 Tailgate problem of the 2003 Ford Escape

Paint is peeling from the roof and two spots on the tailgate. The service manager at sloan Ford in exton, PA wouldn't even look at it. A rep from Ford advised that a dealer should look at it. The service manager at kennedy Ford collision in conshohocken PA was kind enough to look at the vehicle and confirm that it is defective. Ford declined assistance. The Ford rep would not admit that there is a defect despite advising me that Ford service managers have superior expertise in evaluating failures.
