1 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/10/2021

The vehicle was stationary - the lift gate traps water inside and has caused the lift gate to rust out so badly that it has caused me to replace the lift gate latch actuator motor and assembly on the lift gate 5 times since I purchased this vehicle in may 2010. My service dog has gotten stuck in the vehicle due to the lift gate motor becoming broken. I was unable to open the liftgate and had to take down the seats. In the event this was an emergency my service animal would've died. My service animal is too large to ride up front and she rides in the back. On occasion when my lift gate was not working, I had to rent a vehicle. In order to fix the recent issue with the gate, the shop that I took my car to had to pry open the gate and replace the motor assembly. This issue will continue until the lift gate is replaced and no longer holds water. This is a common safety issue with the Ford Escapes. Additionally, the front passenger side door also holds a lot of water. The mileage indicated is for the most recent repair, but it has happened multiple times prior to this date.

4 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2019 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/15/2020

When you hit the button to close the liftgate it doesn't usually latch. Many times I have to manually close it because when I push the button the liftgate will close down but it won't latch. I have taken the vehicle to a Ford dealer 2x. The first time they confirmed the issue and replaced a mechanism that controls the liftgate. The problem came back less than 1 week later. When I took it back they claimed it always latched when they tested, and didn't do anything to it. Meanwhile, I took it home and it still won't latch when I try to close it with the button. Vehicle is always off, parked, when I try to close the liftgate. The only odd thing I noticed is if I keep the driver side door open when I put the button to close the liftgate then for some reason the liftgate latches, probably 8/10 times.

5 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2012 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/30/2019

My vehicle is in good condition but continues to have problems. I closed my lift gate tonight and heard a crack. My rear glass broke off of the liftgate glass hinge on the passenger side of the vehicle. It only remained attached by the driver side hinge. It appears that corrosion/rust occurred because it was not sealed or water got in somehow. I am very thankful this did not happen while driving because if it would have broken from both, it would certainly detach and break on the roadway.

6 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/20/2018

Open the liftgate with hands free to load groceries into car. As I load from cart to trunk the liftgate will automatically begin to close hitting me on the head. After getting hit it startles me so much not sure if it goes back up from the hitting motion or me pushing it or I have reached for the button to open it. But it does go back up and I have not been trapped just banged on the head or shoulders. There is a very quiet beeping sound however in a parking lot it is too quiet to hear. I asked at the dealer if it was possible to make this louder or a problem with something I'm doing or a sensor and they could not help me. I have only owned the car about 6 months and this has happened numerous times. The car is not running it's in park in a lot and the key fob is in purse or pocket. I am moving around however to open the liftgate you do have to swing the foot somewhat under to get it to open. I have been careful where my feet are to try and make sure that I am not effecting it to close. I like the hands free feature or I would disable it but I don't like getting hit in the head. This has happened to both my husband myself and both of us loading together.

7 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2015 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/30/2018

The liftgate latch failed causing the liftgate to not properly close and be secured. We had to drive with the gate open as it would not latch. The vehicle has a recall for the door latches which are similar. The lift gate latch should have been included in the recall however according to olathe Ford 913-325-4360, this is not covered under the recall and is a cost to me of over $350. 00 refer to recall notice NHTSA campaign number: 16v643000 which does not specify just the 4 doors, just "doors" however the rear lift door per the dealer is not included.

11 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/02/2016

Vehicle was parked. Owner opened the rear window. On latch release (and window upswing) the left side of the window shot out and fell from the car -- window was being held onto the car only by the glass lift supports. The window liftgate hinges had deteriorated/broken apart from the anchor bolt on the window. Approximately 3-5 months previously, owner noticed that a white substance had stained the rear window just below both liftgate hinges.

13 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

2009 Ford Escape liftgate glass hinges have excessive corrosion and the right hinge has broken off and crumbled at the center of the hinge. This occurred at 150,000 miles. This occurred when about to drive off after leaving a shopping plaza. The window then is only supported by one hinge, and the lift support bars.

15 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/08/2016

One day closed the rear hatch glass and the hinge holding the glass in place fell apart due to corrosion. Now the window is barely hanging on only with the help of the latch locking it in place. Not a sufficient amount of anti-corrosive used on the metal to protect it. Now have to drive around with it barely hanging on until the replaces parts I ordered come in because they could only be found on the internet. Also too the weatherstripping around the window is not plush enough I think to protect the inside from water damage which also lead to the whole liftgate failing to open anymore. I feel Ford should take responsibility for the poor craftsmanship they did when first building the car. And I know I'm not the only one with this problem but I'm sure others fail to report it to the proper agency.

16 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/07/2015

My 2011 Ford Escape rear liftgate latch won't open- caused by premature failure of an electrical actuator that unlatches (open) the lift-gate. The vehicle's liftgate only unlatches electrically (button switch operated). There is no way to open the liftgate manually if the actuator fails or in the event of vehicle's electric power failure. Defective design, quality control/reliability issue as well as safety concern. . Read more...

17 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/16/2015

The liftgate is malfunctioning. The powered lift gate raises up after the button is pushed, opens full, stops fully opened for a split second before slamming down without warning. The liftgate will not stay open on its own, no matter how you open it. Warning: could cause bodily injury, be aware of the liftgate at all times.

18 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/22/2014

The liftgate window latch on my 2008 Ford Escape XLT has separated from from the rear window glass. The glue joint has failed and allowed the latch to break away from the window. Now the window cannot be closed tightly and locked. This is a safety issue because the exhaust gases may be drawn into the cabin through the gap between the window and the window seal on the liftgate. It is also a security issue, since someone could easily pry the window open and enter the vehicle cabin. Originally, the latch was apparently glued to the glass and also is attached loosely with a single bolt to the rear window wiper assembly. Right now, the separated latch is flopping around in such a way that the window can be pulled open by about 1/2 to 1 inch. This is clearly a defect in the design of this latch on this vehicle. The latch is absolutely crucial to the security and safety of the occupants of the vehicle. I believe that the NHTSA should force Ford to recall their vehicles with this same insecure defective latch design and replace it with a secure design that will remain attached to the window glass.

19 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/11/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the rear lift gate latch failed. The rear liftgate screws separated caused the lift gate to open while the contact reversed from the driver way. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer advised the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number 04v602000 (latches/locks/linkages). The failure and current mileage was 132,000. Li.

20 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/07/2013

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the liftgate window was found to be shattered. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that they could not diagnose the cause of failure. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 37,000. The VIN was unavailable.

21 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/07/2012

Right after the warranty went out the vehicle starting slamming from 1st into 2nd upon acceleration. The idle is very rough and quite loud, the engine makes a funny noise and I take extremely good care of my vehicle, getting all of the scheduled oil changes on time, replacing the air filter, etc. I also explained to them that the vehicle wasn't idling properly and that the engine used to be quiet. The windshield is extremely thin as well, a small pebble hit my windshield causing a 8 inch crack in a matter of minutes to where it was beyond getting it fixed. Then liftgate started giving me problems. When you press the button, it would make the sound, but sometimes open, then on may 17, 2013 it just quit working all together. On may 18, 2013, I took it to reynolds Ford for a scheduled oil change right before a trip to mexico and upon telling them about it, they wanted $250 just to look at it before parts and labor. Now, the rear blinker doesn't work and you can't replace it due to the fact that you can't get the liftgate to open in order to remove the rear taillight assembly. So, when you are trying to make a left turn, vehicles behind you don't know you are turning and almost hit you (safety hazard). You also can't change a flat tire since you can get to the jack, which is in the rear compartment accessed through the liftgate. This is a serious problem as there is no manual release for the hatch to get it open period, once the latch doesn't work, it just doesn't work.

22 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/29/2012

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while parked, the rear lift gate hinge fractured. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The contact stated the hinge part number was the same part number for the hinge being recalled under NHTSA campaign id number: 04v442000 structure:body:hatchback/liftgate:hinge and attachments. The dealer was made aware of the failure and stated the vehicle was not included in that recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 94,000.

23 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/29/2012

Liftgate would not open. I was told it was not covered and I had to pay $278. 00 to the dealer. Now I see there is a service bulletin covering this problem, for this year car; but my VIN was not covered, according to Ford the day I had it repaired.

24 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/11/2006

8/11/2006 I was knocked out and pinned by the rear hatch door of our 2006 Ford Escape. I opened the rear hatch and leaned in to remove some items from rear of the Ford Escape and the hatch came slamming down hitting me in the back of the head and rendering me unconscious (I am not sure as too how long) I came to face first inside the Ford Escape with the door pinning me down and my feet hanging out the rear. It was almost impossible to get free of the rear hatch and become free. I found one of the rear strut slaying inside the rear compartment and the other practically broke and dangling from the right side of the rear hatch. After coming to my senses I took the Ford Escape to our local dealership (simi valley Ford) and turned it in for warranty to fix it (we have the 3yr/36000 mile bumper to bumper + the top Ford extended warranty , I checked it into our local Ford dealership (simi valley Ford) and was told they would fix it and would we need a rental car which we said no we have my Ford excursion to drive. About a week later I receive a call from keith (simi valley Ford service ) saying Ford refuses to fix or stand behind this problem and for us to turn it into our insurance. We feel this is Fords defect and they should stand behind it , so our insurance company has sent out a investigator but they are not sure as to what happened. This is a Ford defect on our 2006 Ford Escape with 7100 miles and Ford is trying to say its wear and tear , we don't think so , we feel its a huge safety issue which Ford is trying to avoid. We hope no other people or children have been or will be hurt by this defect , for the hatch is extremely heavy and could easily could kill someone of weaker stature.
