I was driving out of a parking lot (going very slow) when my steering wheel started to shake and I could not move the steering wheel right or left it was frozen my entire dash board lit up. I quickly turned off the car and turned it back on - my steering wheel was still shaking but not as much and my dash had the tcs code on. I took it to Ford dealership right away and the car was difficult to drive made me so nervous. At a stop light I threw it in neutral and that did seem to help and got rid of the constant tsc light on the dash and the car drove a little smoother to the dealership. The dealership said that I need a new steering wheel column along with torque sensor and software update. I asked if this is from wear and tear and they said no just a faulty malfunction to the tune of 2036 dollars. I have a Ford escape 2011 with 84,000 miles on it only serviced at Ford for it's life. I have a case number with the Ford regional service manager who will decide if they will take care of this since there is a recall for this same problem(14s05) for over a million Ford escapes and mariners 2008-2011. The recall does not include the hybrid but there are so many less hybrids out there so they are not included. However I had a throttle problem a couple of years back where my car would stall out going 60 miles and hour super dangerous. There was a recall for Ford escapes for the throttle but not the Ford Escape Hybrid however they did cover the repair since it was the same problem existing in my car. I am hoping they will cover this again since it is the same problem (ie recall) of the Ford escape and mariners 2008-2011. Also this is so dangerous thank goodness I was not on the highway because there is no way I could turn that steering wheel!.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving at low speeds, the vehicle lost steering functionality. The contact stated that the power steering required excessive effort to operate. The contact stated that the recall letter stated that there were three steps that were to be performed regarding the recall; however, the dealer only performed the first step. Upon start vehicle would loose power steering. We would turn the car off and restart and power steering would be working again. Problem begin happening more frequently. After a couple of weeks, took into local dealership and determined we needed a new steering column assembly. Known issue with the 09 Ford escape and when I spoke with customer service, Ford was unwilling to do anything.

I am asking that the investigation into Ford recall 14s05 be reopened as the repair options were not sufficient to ensure the vehicle be correctly repaired as well as insure the safety of vehicles operation. Vehicle steering wheel jittering, bumping and vibrating while vehicle is stopped and experiencing intermittent loss of power steering. Ford recall 14s05 performed on vehicle 12/17/2014. At the time Ford chose not to replace electric steering column and elected to complete recall with alternate software update. On 3/17/2017 the same Ford dealership that performed recall on vehicle has determined that the electronic steering column must now be replaced due to part failures stated in recall. Both the dealership warranty administrator and Ford customer service state that recall has been closed on vehicle due to December 2014 maintenance therefore the repair costs of the recalled parts will not be covered.

Ive had reoccurring issues with my brakes ,abs system , power train , steering column starter. Over the course of three years and it seem like the problems keep coming up . The only close call I remembers is coming home from work . Making a turn on to a street, then all of a sudden my power steering went out completely. I could have crashed if a huge curb wasnt there .

The recall issued in may, 2014 for the power steering assist fault did not fix the problem. The sensor failed again, and the remedy by Ford literature to the dealership was erroneous and overly costly to me. The service department detected a fault code, b2278, and the remedy listed three repairs in sequence to fix. The first was the software update proscribed in the recall bulletin. That procedure had been completed by a dealer previously. The second in the sequence was to replace the sensor. Dealer followed this and the fix failed, causing replacement of the steering column, costing an additional $1200 on top of the $500+ for the first failed fix. Attached receipt for entire repair of a recall that didn't get fixed the first time.

My vehicle had a recall 14s05 involving power steering done 7/23/14 yesterday while at the post office, when I started the car and went to back up the steering wheel was difficult to turn and handle. Able to get home without power assist, but now after researching this problem, I understand that since the recall done was just a computer upgrade and nothing physical done, I have no recourse except to have the power steering column replace at my expense. This is a deception on Ford's part, as most people would take the car in for recall without questioning the procedure to be done. Ford should be paying for every faulty steering problem as a matter of safety and avoiding any loss of lives.

In August 2014 with 99k miles vehicle was taken to dealership for regular scheduled maintenance. The vehicle had not experienced any steering problems however, during maintenance dealership installed software updates to pscm and ic modules per NHTSA recall 14-v284000. Within a few months the vehicle began intermittently losing the power steering during lower speed turning, the exact thing the recall was supposed to fix. In August 2015 at the next regular service appt I informed dealership of the problem and copies of on-line research that showed it as an ongoing problem related to the recall. I was told that they had done the recall "fixes" and could not specifically identify the problem but if I wanted the steering column replaced they would do it, for several thousand dollars, of which I declined. I have had many close calls when without warning the steering becomes almost locked up but have been able to so far muscle it around the turns.

The steering stops with no warning. It first happened in 2011 with 27,259 miles and the dealership replaced the power steering column/module assy. It is happening again. There is a recall, but the dealerhsip said our car was not part of that recall and they couldn't get the code to come up so they did nothing! this last time, my young daughter was driving!.

This is in reference to recall 14v-284/14s05, where Ford escape and mariners lose their power steeting. Our vehicle actually lost its ps a couple of weeks before the recall. We took the vehicle to washington (PA) Ford. They had to replace our ignition to get the recall code. Once they did that, they completed step 1 of the recall to reprogram the power steering module. At that point, washington Ford closed out the recall, saying that it was fixed. This was before I was able to test the vehicle. As soon as I drove off of the lot, the ps continued to turn off and on. To this day (4 months later), the ps continues to turn off and on at random, accompanied by a loud click from the steering column. Woltz and wind Ford let us know that they contacted Ford corporate, and they were told that no work could be done on the recall, since it was closed. This seems like an error, and we need to have our recall opened back up. Please contact me ASAP to help me from wrecking. Numerous times, I have been going 60 or 70 mph on the highway when this has happened, resulting in near death. This cannot be safe or a responsibility of me, the owner.

I stopped at a stop sign and attempted to turn left up a hill. The steering locked and for a second or two I couldn't turn and was afraid I would crash into the hillside. After braking the steering column unlocked. I took it to the dealer and they were unable to duplicate the problem so they recommend replacing the whole column at my expense.

I went to the dealership and found out the recall which affects the steering mechanism is a computer program that produces the same effect and not a structural problem of the steering column. I am having the repair done today, but I am concerned that there may be other dangerous structural problems out there with the steering column. My experience has not been unique.

While driving the car I came to a stop sign and the steering wheel started to vibrate and jerk when the car was stopped. This continued for the drive to work, at each stop the steering wheel was moving. When leaving work, after starting the car, found that there was no power steering. Turned off the car and re-started it, the power steering came back. Since that time the problem has become more frequent. Sometimes I have to restart the car a few times before the steering activates. We just dropped it off at a dealership for inspection, our local garage could get no help from Ford on what was required for the repair or what the computer codes meant, other than they were related to the steering column. So now we are being told by Ford that the repair can range from $600 to $1,500. 00 to fix the problem, but they are not sure what it is, and that they do not believe what was reported on the internet is the cause. If all of the symptoms match the others listed how can the problem be something else?.

While traveling down a winding road, the steering locked and I did not have control for a few seconds, then it came back. This has occasionally happened in the past, but thought is was something related to the battery. The battery was replaced a few months ago, and obviously not the issue. Brought to Ford dealer. They said I the steering column replaced to the tune of $1300. 00 plus. They said it was a faulty sensor to the power steering. They confirmed that there is no warning with this and recommended that I not drive the car, even though they did not have the part, nor did they offer me alternative transportation. If they view it as this dangerous, and the part is backordered because it is so common, how on earth is this not a recall covered byford? are they waiting for me to have an accident? I have to drive the car to get to work in order to replace the part. This is outrageous. Perhaps there is legal action to take. Additionally, the dealer wants me to "prepay" for the part. I have never, in my entire life, prepaid for a part from the dealer. My mechanic cannot fix it because Ford has made it impossible for a third party to do this. This is my first Ford and will be my last.

For the past two or three weeks I have noticed a progressively worse shaking and vibrating in the steering column, especially when the vehicle was coming to a stop or resting. On the 27th of March, 2013 I started the vehicle and the steering was really difficult, as in the power assist wasn't helping. The brakes were still working fine. When I shut the vehilce off and restarted it, the steering was being assisted by the eps again. 12/26/2012 I was making a u-turn and my steering wheel locked up. Almost hit the light post, another car, almost ran up on the curb and almost hit a rock/boulder sign. Problem went away once I restarted car. Car sat in mechanic shop for weeks, due to back order, and was finally fixed. A new steering column cost me $1064. 35 - I also have the original part. 10/26/13 I was driving on freeway, at midnight, and was two hours away from my house. My car kept slipping and the steering wheel was loose. I almost hit the freeway median multiple times, almost hit multiple cars, and almost spun out while on my drive home that night. I did not have a tow truck come because state farms computers were down and I'd have to pay $69 a mile if a tow came- and I was still two hours away from home. I took my car to my mechanic the next day and was told, again, that I am lucky to be alive. My u-join was completely broken and was told that this is also related for the steering column. I paid another $287. 06 and had a new u-joint placed. I contacted Ford about this steering problem, when my column had to be replaced, and they told me that they have no documented reports of an issue and that there is no recall. The internet states otherwise, and I read thousands of accounts of people getting into accidents due to their steering wheel locking up.

The contact then shut the engine off and after a several minutes, was able to restart the vehicle and regain power steering assist capabilities. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated that the steering column would have to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Stopped at intersection waiting to turn left. Turned the wheel left to make the turn while applying the accelerator. The power steering support went out, making it almost impossible to turn the vehicle. The wheel was partially turned and would essentially not turn any further. At the same time it felt like the brakes were not as effective either. After approximately two seconds, power was restored to the steering and I was able to recover and complete the turn. This has happened three times, all in left turns from a stop while attempting to begin the turn. After the third time I took the vehicle to the dealer. The Ford dealer replaced components of the steering column in an attempt to fix this, and so far it has not returned.

Several forums online are indicating that this issue is not unique, and rather common. Service department andy gates (Ford, victorville, CA) reports that the vehicle is not safe to drive in it's current state. The report from service department victorville, CA indicates that the steering column was designed with safety flaws, and Ford is having difficulty diagnosing the problem early on.
