This is the 4th time in 5 weeks that my car has shut down while driving and it says "engine fail safe mode". It has been in the shop after the first 3 incidents and different things have been done to it. I just got it out of the shop and it happened the 4th time. So it's going back to shop. I have been fortunate, and have not been in a accident as a result of it shutting down. Looking online it's amazing how many people have experienced this same issue. Why has Ford or NHTSA not done something about this? will it take someone getting killed before they take action?.
I was driving my 2005 Ford Expedition eddie bauer edition when I started to make a turn. Suddenly the vehicle stopped moving and an indicator light stating "engine fail safe mode" came on. During the turn, a vehicle was coming toward me and I barely had enough time to get my vehicle out of the lane before I got hit. I had to stop my vehicle, put it in park (while sitting on the roadway), shut it off, and restart it before I could move again. It ran fine for a couple of days and then it happened to me again while driving. This is a very dangerous situation that should be looked into and after checking the internet it seems there are lots of people with the same experiences. I took my vehicle to the shop and they told me it was the throttle body. After spending $409. 00 (because of course it was not covered by my warranty) to repair it hopefully the problem may be fixed. I figured spending the money was better than the option of possibly getting in a serious accident and being killed if the problem was not fixed. Somebody needs to look into this problem with the vehicle and make Ford responsible for costs since it is obviously a defect in the vehicle.
My mother had my car when this occurred and the incident and subsequent research showing a dangerous pattern and no recall of this issue has me very concerned. While at a red light, the engine failsafe message flashed across the dash with the engine light on while making loud alert beeps. The engine was still running but the car would not go. My mother put it in park and shut the engine off. She was able to restart the car and drive with no issues. My concern doing research on this issue is that this can occur while in motion. If this had happened a minute earlier or later, it could have resulted in very serious accidents during high speeds or left turns. I am now almost fearful for myself and others to drive this car.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled and the engine fail safe mode warning message illuminated. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not inspected or repaired. The failure and current mileage was 125,000.
The engine just stalled and the message "engine fail safe mode" appeared. Luckily we were right at a parking lot that we rolled into with my husband steering. We had just pulled off the interstate traveling 65 mph. It could have resulted in injuries and/or death. Ford should fix this problem.
Engine failsafe mode came on in the middle of driving and the truck just shut off in the middle of the road. I had to turn it off and restart it. . . It happened three times in one trip.
I was driving down the center lane on rt 41 in port charlotte, with an approximate speed of 45 mph, when the engine just shut down. This is not the first time it happened to me, and it's very dangerous. I had to maneuver carefully to pull over to the side of the road, with cars beeping, and swerving around me. I tried to restart the vehicle, but kept getting an "engine fail safe mode" message. I sat for a while on the side of the road for about 5 minutes, and when I tried restarting the truck, it miraculously started. On Monday, September 17, 2012, I went out to start my vehicle so I could bring it in to my mechanic, and it wouldn't start. I had to have it towed to his shop. He informed me that he has seen this problem many times with this vehicle. He also told me that people were on the highway when the vehicle shut down on them, and has caused accidents. He reset the code for the throttle body, and the truck ran fine. After doing an internet search on this problem, I see that there are multiple complaints about this dangerous problem. I also contacted Ford to see if there was a recall for this problem, and they said there wasn't. I am afraid to drive the truck now, for fear that it is going to shut down in a busy intersection. Hopefully Ford will step up to the plate and do a recall for this problem.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the engine stalled without warning while driving at any speed. The engine failure mode light illuminated after the failure occurred. The failure was experienced several times. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic, who replaced the fuel filters and the injector but the failure was not corrected. The vehicle was then taken to an authorized dealer, where a diagnostic test was performed and located the failure at the throttle body. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 18,005 and the current mileage was 119,000.
My Ford Expedition, while driving at 40 miles an hour lost power. This is the 3rd time in 2 years it has happened. On the info center it stated engine fail safe mode. The three times it has happened has been on back roads. I consider this a very unsafe condition . My dealer looked at it the first two times and said there were no codes, that I would need to bring it in sooner. But there are no lasting results, and it starts right back up.
While traveling 60-65 mph, in the fast line of a four lane interstate, my 2005 Ford Expedition suffered engine failure. I was able to safely get my car off the interstate without harming myself or my children. The mechanic informed us a rocker pin had broken and caused damage to a piston resulting in the need for a new engine. I am reporting the incident to you because when we picked up our car at the service department, having had the engine replaced, we were told that there were two other Fords (1expedition and 1f150) that came in after ours with the same issue.
2005 Ford Expedition 5. 4 engine, misfiring 3&5 cylinder. Rough idle. Car has 127,000 miles and since we have had it I had issues with it idling in park and almost at times wanting to stall. Engine has on more than 3 occasions while driving 60-70 mph on the highway become un responsive while driving. Engine would run but no acceleration when the gas pedal was pushed; it was like the car was running in neutral. Indicator light came on showing "engine failure". Pulled off the road and restarted car and then it ran fine again. Ford svc dept. Could not replicate the situation when I took it to them, so it was never repaired. (clearly there is a faulty problem) currently car is in the shop replacing all 8 spark plugs, coils and boots. Mechanic indicated a lot of carbon buildup in throttle body. (seems to me possibly some other faulty component could be why I'm having to spend $800 to fully repair my car).
1. There were no events leading up to the failure. There is no warning that this is going to happen or is happening. Under normal driving conditions, my 2005 Ford Expedition simply lost all power and the words "engine fail safe mode" appeared. 2. This occurred twice (oct. 6, 2009 and Nov. 16, 2009). I was able to pull to the side of the road both times but during the second incident, I lost the power steering as well and struggled to pull over. The consequences of this "engine fail safe mode" is that the car stops working. You become a sitting duck wherever the car has decided to go into this mode. You are unable to accelerate -not fun when this happened on the freeway the first time-and if you do not lose your power steering, you can pull to the side of the road. 3. The electronic throttle body was replaced for approximately $700. Nowhere in the car manual does it let you know that this code could lead to this repair. I had a hard time figuring out what the code meant using the owner manual. The most frustrating part of this failure is that if this had occurred when I was traveling at 65 mph on the freeway, I probably would not be here to enter this complaint. I would like to prevent this from happening to someone else.
