Shifter cable broke. Shifter was occasionaly difficult to shift out of park when car was new, took it to dealer and because the problem didn't demonstrate itself when the dealer had it, they didn't do anything to remedy. 4 years later (when warranty is out), the cable snaps. The mechanic calls in to order the new cable and there are plenty in stock, I'm told it's a very common problem. If so, why isn't it a recall?.

Consumer could take vehicle out of park without the foot on the brake. Dealer notified. Ts. . .
Nar 3-11-03 the consumer has experienced several problems with his Ford Expedition, the side view mirrors have turned back from the inside, the top of the shift handle broke off, and all the tires had to be replaced before a firestone recall had been issued. The consumer feels that the dealership should be responsible for repairs since it's was a manufacturers defect and not a maintenance problem.
Shift cable broke in half, causing vehicle not to shift from park to reverse.
While driving 60 mph consumer tried to increase speed, vehicle would not accelerate. Vehicle was towed to dealer, it was determined that transfer case needed to be replaced.
Consumer was traveling inside of a parking lot of a drive through window. Consumer pulled forward, and vehicle put itself into four wheel drive. Consumer couldn't disengage system. Turned, vehicle off and it was still in four wheel drive. It felt like emergency brake was on. Dealership was aware of problem. Also, vehicle was towed twice for same problem.
Vehicle intermittently jumps into 4-wheel low when in reverse, and thenjumps in 4-wheel high when in drive. Switch is suppose to control 4-wheel drive on and off.
While driving consumer noticed vehicle was not shifting, able to go through all gears, vehicle did not shift. Not able to start in drive, and unable to put it in neutral to start. Dealer replaced linkage cable. The shift lever would not go to park position.
At slow speed in 4 wheel drive going through a mud puddle, the flange that extends from the rear axle shaft on which the disc brake caliper is mounted, broke in such a fashion that three of the bolts fell off releasing the caliper to fall against the tire. In addition, the brake line separated and the brake fluid reservoir emptied. The parking brake cable was also severed and nonfunctional. No object was hit to create the problem and was confirmed by the fact that there is no other damage other than this flange. It appears, for now, that the flange cracked releasing the disc caliper assembly which then must have rotated around until the brakeline severed. The failure of the flange would therefore appear to be a manufacturing defect in the quality of the material that makes up the flange (weak steel?). What may be of concern is a similar occurence at high speeds.
While driving vehicle started making noises, and driveshaft vibrated. Felt as if it was about to fall off when driving about 40 mph. Also, transfer case will need to be replaced.
The indicator light will turn off and on intermittently. Vehicle will also make the same clicking noise that it makes when switching to 4-wheel drive.
While standing or driving 4- wheel drive high will shift into 4- wheel drive low or 2- wheel drive into 4- wheel drive low . Dlr cannot determine cause.
Took vehicle to dealer because electronic four wheel drive high system whould randomly just disengage while driving. Continues to do so today, and dealer says Ford is aware of this problem and might be working on a fix for this model year. Supposedly a problem for many people.
While traveling at approximately 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly went into 4wd low, bring the vehicle to a near stop. When vehicle was cranked the next morning, by the tow truck driver, he noticed that the 4wd indicator was on eventhough the switch was not in that position.
The transmision shift cable assembly failed prior to notice resulting in vehicle collision when consumer was testing 4-wheel drive causing vehicle to slide sideways into tree.
Intermittently vehicle jerks forward and jumps. Sealer has replaced transfer case. However , problem reoccurs. Manufacturer has been notified.
Vehicle experienced shift cable failure. When this occurred the shift lever became difficult to shift, also, driver was unable to indicate what gear the vehicle was in. The cable was removed and replaced. There was recall on 97 v 171 000 on this issue, but this vehicle was not included.
