2 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2019 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/16/2024

We bought a 2019 Ford Expedition max XLT. On a trip we kept having problems with it jumping out of gear and it felt like the transmission was going to fall out. We looked it up and found several complaints on this same problem with the 2019 models although I can't find any recalls that would have fixed the problem.

3 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2021 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/01/2023

The transmission is a major issue. I have had it in the shop 3 or 4 times now and still experiencing issues. The vehicle goes in and out of gear, doesn’t always accelerate when giving it gas, jerks when slowing down/downshifting. Makes a loud noise during downshifting at times, and the list goes on. Ford knows there are problems and refuses to address the issue, applies a computer update to bandaid the issue, and sends customers on their way to only be faced with the issue a short time later.

7 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2020 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/28/2021

The contact's husband owns a 2020 Ford Expedition max platinum. The contact stated that while driving at 65-70 mph on cruise control mode, the vehicle inadvertently downshifted, skipped a gear and lurched forward several times. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle would skip from 3rd gear to 5th gear whenever she would depress the accelerator pedal. The contact was able to continue to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired; however upon picking up the vehicle from the dealer and driving home, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle inadvertently decelerated on its own. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact also stated that the rpm of the vehicle was jumping between 2 and 3. The contact continued to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who test drove the vehicle but was unable to diagnose it. The dealer reset the adaptive learning of the vehicle; however the failure persisted and the vehicle would make abnormal clunking sounds when switching gears to drive. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who advised the contact that they could not duplicate the failure. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred increasingly and significantly while driving and the driver side rear brake had a strong burning odor. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer( lebanon Ford 770 columbus Ave, lebanon, OH 45036) who advised the contact that they could not duplicate the failure. The dealer notified the manufacturer of the failure. The manufacturer's field technician advised the dealer to replace the brake light sensors. The contact stated that the brake light sensors were replaced; however upon picking up the vehicle, the start button was depressed but the vehicle failed to start. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered a buy back. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was.

8 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2020 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/25/2021

At 70+ mph the automatic transmission tried to drop into 1st gear while on the interstate in a passing lane with heavy traffic all around. It had a loud and physical clunk then began to lose power. It was erratic, disorienting and distracting. The sudden change in behavior of the vehicle could have caused me to lose control of the vehicle at speed on a federal interstate and could easily resulted in an accident causing major injury and damage. The dealer says the car has no fault codes and they have download "updates" to the software. To date they have no explanation for why the vehicle behaved in this manner. This is the second time I have taken the vehicle in for odd transmission behavior. I have a video of the dashboard during the event showing the speed, rpm, mileage and the gear selector gauge when the transmission attempted several times to shift from higher gears to the 1st gear. I shared the video with the dealer. The video I have was taken with a iphone. It would not up load to your site. I can make it available. This is dangerous with no asnwers!.

9 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2012 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/15/2021

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at 45 mph, the vehicle loss motive power and stalled. The contact had to restart the vehicle and continued to drive. However, when leaving work the failure occurred again which at that time the contact had pulled the vehicle over to side of the road and have it towed to the local dealer who inspected the vehicle but could not duplicate the failure, but diagnosed the failure as a front end harness issue with the transmission. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.

10 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

I have a 2005 Ford Expedition with 84k miles and I was going 30 mph when I lost the gas pedal(power) to my vehicle. Warning light came on and then I pulled to side of road. Lucky I was not hit from behind due to losing power to the engine. Turned vehicle off for a few minutes and then turned back on. No warning light and truck ran fine. Took it to local Ford dealer who for $98 tells me I need to spend another $600 to replace throttle body. After a long discussion with service manager I decided to decline the repair until I contact Ford and national highway safety board.

11 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/03/2011

Vehicle has been sputtering when accelerating at about 40mph. Spark plugs are "seered" and Ford mechanic tells us its a known problem, but not covered under the warranty because spark plugs are considered maintenance. The manual says we the scheduled maintenance is 100,000 miles and we are only at 76,000. If they are known to be faulty and we are not near the scheduled/recommended mainteance then shouldn't this be a warranty issue? I think Ford is milking its customers with faulty parts as I had the same issue with my brakes. It feels as if I am landing a plane when I come to a stop with all the shaknig an rattling. I was told this is a known issue with the Ford brakes - they just warp.

13 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2010 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 07/08/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Expedition. When the vehicle stopped on an incline, the gear shift was in reverse; however, it responded as if it were in park. The vehicle crashed into a bank of rocks. There were front end damages to the bumper. There were no injuries mentioned. The dealer was contacted and stated that was the way the vehicle was designed. The failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 2100 and the current mileage was 2150. Updated 08/27/10. When the vehicle was turned off, it went into free wheel and started to roll down the incline and subsequently crashed causing damage. The vehicle was on an incline and thought to be in park, but was really in reverse. Updated 08/31/jb.

14 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/30/2010

Driving my 2005 Ford Expedition limited in the morning. After about 2 miles the car powered to a crawl and gave engine fail safe mode alert. Pulled to side. Powered down car and the restarted without incident. A week later the same thing happened again. This is apparently a defective throttle control unit. This description is all over the internet and is a known safety problem as people are reporting that it has happened to them on the freeway. Car is unsafe to drive and even though the problem is well known, Ford company is taking no responsibility. All NHTSA has to do is google "engine fail safe mode" and see the number of problems that come up with same issue. This is definitely a well known safety problem but yet there is no recall. Dealer says throttle control unit has to be replaced at a cost of $514. 61 + tax. This problem may also have taken out my air conditioning. It went out at the same time as the second failure, but dealer (vista Ford in oxnard) is saying there is no relationship. Others have reported a/c shutting down when engine fail safe failure occurred.

15 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/27/2010

In the days prior I would sometimes have to manipulate the gear shift (automatic) in order to start the car. The car was in park on the flat part of my driveway when I stepped into the garage for less than 10 seconds. The car rolled away doing several thousands of dollars in damage to my vehicle and taking out the neighbor's tree and landscaping. The gentleman that helped me can attest that when he went to back the car up - the car was in park and he had to physically put it in reverse to move it.

Failure Date: 05/15/2010

Vehicle left parked on flat surface, I got back in after it had been parked for about 5 minutes. . As soon as I got in, the vehicle started rolling forward. I immediately applied the brake and checked that the shifter was fully in "park", which it was. As soon as I let off the brake, the vehicle rolled about another foot before stopping itself.

23 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/19/2007

Since purchasing the vehicle in October of 2006, the transmission seemed sluggish at stops when accelerating, I have taking the vehicle into a Ford dealership three or more times and now the transmission is still sluggish when moving from a stop. I took it back to a dealer and Ford service said that a memo said not to work on my transmission until the update for software is issued sometime in November. This is at least a month away and the vehicle is not safe for my wife and family to drive in. I have a Ford rep who we asked to supply us with a rental car and they are saying we can rent a car and they will review it when the vehicle is fixed and decide if they are going to pay for the rental. This is ridiculous to be treated this way by such a huge corporation.

28 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/18/2006

When exiting interstate, changes lane and as gas petal was pushed, no power to SUV, engine did not race or shake, just no power. Put SUV into first gear and it jerked ahead at 10 mph to stop light. While stopped, SUV would roll backward if brake not on. Made left hand turn and put back into gear, about one mile later same loss of power until put into 1st gear. One month later, also while exiting interstate had same loss of all power at bottom of ramp when trying to merge into left lane. SUV would only move after put into 1st gear, only at 10 mph. Dealership could find nothing wrong after a week with the first incident, dealer kept for 3 and a half weeks and the p&s director drove 716 miles and could not duplicate this problem. (note both happen within one week of dealer oil change) p&s director suspects fly by wire issue, said that compared to other 2005/2006 models ours has a dead pedal feeling.

29 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 09/25/2006

The gear marker for my 98 Expedition transmission began to mark incorrectly. The gear shift changer shows thats its in park, when its actually in reverse. It also shows that its in neutrual when its actually still in drive. The marker is off its center and has caused me and my wife several close calls. I called the local Ford dealer which said my vehicle was not coverd by the 97 recall, (97v171000) of sept 30, 1997. I also contacted Ford customer service who related the same info the local Ford dealer had stated. This is a dangerous situation and I believe Ford should fix it for us. My wife and I have hit several parked cars when trying to negotiate the vehilce into a parking space. There was no damage, but we were lucky.

30 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/11/2006

General complaint about vehicles that allow movement without stepping on the brake. My friend had a tahoe and his grandson got in the car turned the ignition key not starting the car, but two clicks and the car rolled, kid jumped out and was crushed by the tire. I believe there is a safety device that requires a foot on the brake that should be required in all cars. I have 3 children under the age of 7 and am concerned about this. I tested my Ford Expedition and it does not have the safety feature.

With all the talk about the Toyota acceleration problem, it made me recall two times when my Ford Expedition did the same thing. It was only momentarily though and did not surge up to high speeds. It was just a surge of power and my foot was not on the accelerator . . . It only happened twice so I never thought much about it. .
