38 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/05/2004

The complaint was sent via e-mail. I recently had a near accident while traveling. The vehicle transmission just all of a sudden locked up and slammed out of gear. Luckily I had just exited off a busy highway, and was spared a possible deadly accident. After taking the vehicle to a repair shop I was told the sprag clutch had gone out, and the metal shavings were all in the transmission. I was also told that the problem was a known issue by Ford and among the repairs shops. The defect is identified within a specific 6 months time frame of production. They said that the new Ford replacement transmission has been modified to fix this known defect in the sprag clutch.

39 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 07/31/2004

I parked my 2003 Ford Expedition in my driveway. I put it in park and engaged the emergency brake. As I went to open my door I turned to see the truck rolling down the driveway. It hit my neighbor's truck and when I got to the truck, it was still in park. After having the truck at the dealership for several days I was told there was nothing wrong with it. I asked for a Ford rep to examine the vehicle but with no success. The people at the dealership have been helpful however they are running up against a brick wall as well. The owner and service manager were told by Ford that an independent engineer would be sent out to look at the truck. When I called I was told the notes stated that there was no further action necessary by Ford.

This occurred on private property and there was no other damage to property or person other than the rear door panel of the vehicle which was damaged by the impact. The shift lever of the vehicle will not go into park properly now and appears to be somewhat loose. 58 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 08/31/2003

I own a 2003 for Expedition. It recently came to my attention that I do not have to actually apply my brake to move my car from park to reverse. I only have to barely touch the brake pedal and can put the vehicle in reverse. I feel that this can be very dangerous should a child be left alone in a running vehicle. Hen I took the vehicle to the dealer he later informed me that all 2003's do this. I contacted Ford motor company but, also feel it is necessary to inform you and ask for your assisstance in this matter.

64 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/27/2002

We purchased this vehicle from a private owner we knew very well and all regular maintance had been performed according to Ford recomendations. In 2001 with only 30,000 miles the transmission had to have o-rings replaced in transmission because of problems with the automatic shifting. We had the transmission flushed just prior to the following incident as recommended by the Ford owners manual. In June 2002 while towing a trailer (weights within limits of vehicle requirements) we experience a complete loss of the transmission. Engine would rev while in gear but acted like in neutral. Transmission fluid was spewing out from under the vehicle and smoking. We pulled safely to the side of the rode but had to be towed to the next available town. This transmission was equipped with an auxillary transmission cooler. There is only 58,000 miles on the vehicle, less than 30,000 since the last problem. We were informed by the service tech that the transmission would neither drive forward or in reverse and had to be replaced. The transmission was replaced with a Ford rebuilt transmission. With in approx. 1-2 months after replacement the service engine light came on and the service tech informed us that it was a transmission code. After resetting the light and waiting for an appointment with the "transmission person" at the dealership the light did not come back on an the service tech advised to 'wait and see'. In Dec. 2002 while driving in the mountains with 4 adults and 3 children in the car not pulling a trailer, the service engine light came on and the transmission was shifting "hard" and at inappropriate times with varyiing rpms and speeds. After waiting the weekend for the appointment time, the service tech informed us that the solinoid pack in the transmission needed replaced. At this point there is only 8,000miles on the 2nd transmission. The solinoid pack was replaced and currently the vehicle has not had anymore problems.

68 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 07/25/2002

There are several incidents, with different symptoms involving the electronic automatic transmission beginning 4/00, this has become an ongoing problem. Back in shop at the moment, going into 4x4 by itself. The incident that I reported, involved complete failure of the range sensor, vehicle could suddenly not shift beyond second gear on the interstate. Max speed I could maintain was 50mph at 3400rpm's. Dealer replaced sensor, 30 miles later went out again, next dealership replaced again and main processor. Now unannounced goes into 4x4 difficult to turn, and then in a few miles, goes back off.
