Ford Expedition owners have reported 14 problems related to steering linkages (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Expedition based on all problems reported for the Expedition.
I have noticed a large increase in amount of sway when steering at higher speeds. I went to change my oil and found that one of the linkages from the stablizer arm to the axles? (sides where the wheel is connected) had snapped and the other one was missing. I contacted two different Ford dealers, one acknowledged that they had seen that problem several times and the other one said they had never seen or heard of it. They wanted $75. 00 for just the parts (linkages), which I paid considering the safety issue. I am a mechanical engineer and when you have bolts snapping like that it appears to be bad engineering or faulty parts. Also when you consider these vehicles have had a rolling issue in the past (although attributed to the tires), I thought this would definitly warrant a recall investigation (there have been other documented cases on your site of this problem also). I replaced the parts: two (2) xl3z-5495aa studs, two (2) f65z-5c491-bc nut & washers, two (2) f65z-5k483-cc links. I have kept the one stud that had snapped showing the break. It did not snap on the threaded end.

I received an unusual safety bulletin from Ford with a discription of how mechanics should inspect ball joints (steering linkage). I said to myself then, when I have this inspection performed, the car will have defective parts that will have to be replaced. I was right. $594. 45 for ball joint replacements at 47,271 miles! ball joints should last 100,000 miles or more. I believe Ford should replace for free since they installed defective parts on new vehicles. Defective steering linkage is a critical safety issue. I would suggest they do a recall. Thank you.

The links have fallen off or self destrucuted 3 times. Twicw on the left front, and once on the right front. The dealership is fully aware a problem exists as they told us a recall might be forth coming. However, after reading in the paper that only 14 problems have been reported, I felt I must inform your organisation of the chronic failure on my Expedition.

The left tie rod disconnected from the steering control mechanism on a straight city roadway at a speed of 25 mph. The vehicle began to vibrate severely (as only one wheel had steering control), but I was able to stop without incident. If this had happened at 65 mph, a rollover would have probably occurred. This vehicle is mostly driven by my wife, and has never been off-road. The stabilizer links were severely worn, and one of them was missing entirely. The inner and outer left tie rods and the two stabilizer links were replaced by an independent repair shop (coon's repair of houghton, mi) at a cost of $186. Plus $40 towing. I did not take the vehicle to the Ford dealer.
Heard a squeaky noise coming from the steering linkages: pitman arm. Consumer heard noises when making turns. Dealer said pitman arm could not be lubricated, has to be replaced at the consumer's cost.
Vehicle was examined by the dealership for suspension problems and noises. Dealers determined that pitman arm and stabilizer bar had cracked. Repairs have yet to be made. Please provide any additional information/attachments.
Complete mechanical problem with steering system. Driving down the road approx 30mph pitman arm detached from steering gear, resulting in complete loss of the steering control.
Pitman arm had to be replaced on two occasions with 15,000 mile of wear due to noise coming from the steering column. Dealer notified.
While driving about 25 mph pitman arm broke, causing to driver to lose control of truck and strike a light post. Vehcle has been repaired.
Driver experienced total loss of steering control when tie rod separated from sleeve connected to steering.
While driving tie rod broke, preventing any movement of steering wheel. Please give any further details.
The vehicle started groaning whenever you turned the steering wheel, consumer states he looked under the vehicle and saw that there was grease smeared around several linkages, in which he believes was a temporary fix to sell the vehicle.
