4 Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 08/10/2009

1. Event: gasoline leaking onto pavement. 2. Ford dealer inspected and found a crack in the filler neck on top of the gasoline tank. I, nor a foreign object, have access to this area. Tank will leak gas onto pavement continuously until below crack level. If an igniter such as a cigarette or match or spark is near the flame, a fire will start on ground under the gas tank leading to the gas tank coated with gas resulting in a vehicle fire or explosion. 3. Ford dealer estimated replacement cost at $1,350. Ford dealer stated this is not a recall item and would not discuss the fact that this might be a defect in the injection molded gasoline tank. I then contacted Ford motor company customer care. Ford motor company customer care would not give me the name of the local Ford motor company representative (regional manager), a superior customer care rep to take my concern to a higher level and dismissed my concern that this was a safety defect issue. I was then informed that there was no further recourse and there was nothing else Ford motor company or my Ford dealer could do for my situation. Therefore, I have no further recourse except to submit my complaint. I cannot afford a replacement gas tank (tank is still installed on my vehicle).

10 Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 09/26/2002

I just purchased a new 2002 Ford Expedition from a local dealer and have just returned it for service. My problem is two-fold: first, the gas gauge registers on full for the first 200 or so miles and then works its way relatively quickly to the half full mark, where it there is only 3 or 4 gallons of gas left in the tank (Ford claims it holds 26 gallons). Secondly, trying to fill the tank with gas, as you would any other vehicle, is very frustrating and time consuming. Two or more vehicles will fuel up and leave before I can complete the task. When having an estimated 4 gallons left in the tank, upon refueling, the pump will stop between 11 and 12 gallons, and accept another 10 to 12 more gallons at 4 to 6 tenths at a time,. But get this, the tank will show full with only 12 gallons in it!! the selling/servicing dealer says this is normal. I say that's wrong, and it's unsafe. You never know when it's going to run out, or know how far you can really go on a tank. (no idea if the tank was really full) how about the extra exposure to the gasoline fumes the epa is trying to limit us to and keep out of the environment. It goes without saying that fuel gages have been around for a long time as well as fuel tanks. Not knowing when or where a vehicle (new vehicle) is going to run out of fuel is dangerous for not only the driver but also other drivers. The fuel tank filling problem is inexcusable. These vehicles should be recalled and corrected by Ford. Thank you for your help and support. Dt.

Dixie donelson had only purchased her Ford Expedition the month prior (early June), and was just underway for a trip to visit her daughter in colorado. The original police report documents her losing control of her vehicle within the first 40 minutes of her trip. Further observations of the crash site have revealed tread remnants of new firestone SUV tires. However, the Expedition caught fire and all remaining tires burned to the extent of not being identifiable. Dixie had told her duaghter she had new firestone tires, but we have had little success in determining the actual tire model. ( dot number: tire size: (unknown) ).

21 Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Plastic fuel tank leaks due to having a 1 inch hole from road hazards. Dealer has seen vehicle.

22 Tank Assembly problem of the 1997 Ford Expedition

If vehicle is on an incline in a nose-down position, either idling or turned off, it runs out of gas even if the tank is more than 1/4 full. It appears that the design of the fuel tank / fuel intake system is flawed. Gas cannot move from the tank to the engine if vehicle is on an incline. Vehicle has stalled in traffic on hills, and has failed to start if left parked nose-down on an incline. Again this happens with more than 1/4 tank of gas in tank.

23 Tank Assembly problem of the 1997 Ford Expedition

26 gallon fuel tank; after 17 gallons driver must spoon feed the balance.
