Ford Expedition owners have reported 9 problems related to tank filler pipe and cap (under the gasoline fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Expedition based on all problems reported for the Expedition.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while refueling the vehicle, the contact removed the pump nozzle from the filler neck and gasoline squirted out of the fuel filler neck. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 1,578. The VIN was not available.
It takes 20 minutes to fill up my gas tank. Ford put some time of restriction or rerouted the fumes at the gas cap. I have to actually hold the nozzle back and inch from the opening and shoot the gas at the tank. This is a very dangerous situation and I am sure much more dangerous than the original problem the engineers were trying to correct (due to a lawsuit). Now Ford is saying that they will need to put the car on an engine analyzer ($160) then lower the gas tank ($500 to $600) in order to see if the fume vapor hose may be frozen or supposedly there is a replaceable filter that they located above the fuel tank. My response was . . . "no engineer would locate a replaceable filter above the fuel tank"! then the service manager blamed the problem on epa. . . As he is aware of other Expeditions with this problem. . . I said " I retired from epa. . They may have required you to do something with the emissions. . . . But they never instructed your engineers to locate a filter above the fuel tank"!!! I have spoke with two different Ford garages and fill that they are giving me a run around. . . Maybe because I am a women and they think I will pay close to $1,000 to just get fuel in the vehicle!.

Vehicle was leaking gas. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for repairs, but vehicle was still leaking gas from the top of the gas tank, it came from the cap whether it was filled or not.

While filling up vehicle with gas and upon reaching 11 gallons, nozzle exploded, injuring consumer. Fire department was called, and they said that since nozzle was plastic and not medal, it had nothing to grind out on. Plastic createed electricity, a spark of electricity like if somone shocked an individual, that set off explosion.

Gas cap failed. Yh.
Gas cap would not close/lock causing the check engine light to come on.
After 3 service visits, I still have a fueling problem with my 2001 Ford Expedition. I demonstrate the problem to a Ford representative. As demonstrated, we started filling the fuel tank. After 9. 4 gallons, the nozzle automatically clicked off, we continued to fuel the tank over the next 10 15 minutes, with near continuous clicking off of the nozzle. At about 15 gallons, the Ford rep was uncomfortable with further fueling. I continued to 18. 6 gallons, whereupon the fuel finally rose to the filler neck and even spilled over a bit. I have found this is the only way to completely fill the tank. The Ford rep explained to me, very courteously, that once the nozzle clicks off a couple of times, the tank is considered full by Ford measures. The problem with this is that by that measure, I am reducing my fuel capacity by about 9 gallons, and at highway mileage of 20 mpg, reducing my cruising range by 180 miles. It is unacceptable to tell me I have to refuel my Expedition 180 miles shy of where I should be able to cruise and refuel. This is my fourth Ford auto in 4 years. I have never had this problem before. I am requesting that Ford remove the idiotically designed fuel tank in my Expedition, and replace it with a regular idiot-proof fuel tank. Fueling a car should not be rocket science.
