Three problems related to engine clicking and tapping noises have been reported for the 1997 Ford Explorer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
When vehicle is sitting or moving there is a ticking noise coming from engine. Vehicle was at repair shop, and mechanic told consumer that vehicle needed a cam chain guide. Dealership was aware of problem. Dealer replaced the timing chanin, also the brake light was inoperative.
Consumer was at stop sign when there was a loud popping sound and the engine shut down. Timing chain broke. Consumer was hearing popping noise for years, took to dealership and they never were able to duplicate noise.
Was driving and car stopped with a clicking sound. No prior warning with engine lights, etc. Dealer claims failure to change oil resulted in engine failure and that engine needs replaced and Ford also denied claim to replace said engine.
