116 problems related to tire have been reported for the 1999 Ford Explorer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The tires have multiple stress cracks around the tread area on all four tires. I have been to 2 firestone dealers as well as the car dealer and they would not even check them. I was told they were not involved in the recall. I understand that this is the wrong tire number, but my tires look unsafe. This tire has been recalled in other countries and other complaints have been filed regarding this tire. I have contacted many sources and was told not to drive at high speeds or when the weather is hot. That is not a solution. I look forward to your help with this matter. No summary listed for above vehicle. ( dot number: tire size: p255/7or16 ).
Contacted and Ford and firestone and was told since my tires are not part of the recalled tires, there was nothing they could do. At my last maintenance check, my tires were rotated so that the bad tire (as proven by a computer print-out) is now on the rear passenger side. (dot number: w2hlipy398 tiresize: p235/75r15).
We were traveling north on 75 in richardson, TX when the tire came apart. The wheel is all banged up. We're lucky that we didn't get killed or kill anybody while trying to exit the freeway. We don't feel safe driving the car now. It's very upsetting to pay $450. 00/month for a car that you're afraid to drive. ( dot number: tire size: 15 ).
While going through a state inspection, inspector told consumer that tires on vehicle were too small, and they were ruining the alignment of vehicle.
Tire center said could not fix as they said the tire did not have a hole but went "bad". Tire looked normal on outside so I originally though I had a flat. Had tire replaced with same brand, size, and model. About same time towed a small jet ski trailer around town for a couple of days. First time the truck towed anything. Took tire to dealer first but dealer said they don't fix flats and did not look at the tire. Did not lose control of truck when tire went flat. Thanks. ( dot number: tire size: p235-75r15 ).
I thought I should give you my information to add to the recent investigation into firestone tires. My firestone wilderness tire malfunctioned, cauding my Ford Explorer sport ot spin out of control, hit the curn on the opposite side of the street, and flip over. The car has been totalled by my insurance company. ( dot number: tire size: at ).
My wife had tire separation about 4-5 months after we purchased the vehicle. Even though this tire is not currently under recall, I have been to firestone and Ford now and received the runaround. I want to make certain these tires are safe. Also, I think we experienced the same problems others have had. It makes no sense why the tired separated. Firestone in pacific beach, CA will have the record of the replacement. ( dot number: tire size: 16 ).
The tire failed when driving on the freeway. No previous damage on the tire. ( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 ).
I know this size is not subject to the current recall. But I wanted to let you know that I had a similar blow out with the larger tire. I still have the tire. ( dot number: tire size: 16 inch ).
While driving the rear left firestone wilderness tire (p225/70r16) separated and blewout. Nlm.
My left rear tire shredded on the highway, it appears that it was similar to the incidents reported in the newspapers( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 ).
I just heard on the radio of a potential problem. About six weeks ago I had a blowout on the freeway which resulted in a damaged rim and a replacement of a tire. At the time I asked repairman if it could be a defect and he wasn't sure. I asked how long the tires should last, he said 60k miles. I only have 40k miles, with still an okay tread. At the time I figured it was just an anomaly. ( dot number: ).
Having same problem with wilderness ht as previous vehicle with wilderness at. Noise & vibration. ( dot number: vdhl tire size: p235/75r15 ).
The SUV was totaled out, and my husband was injured!( dot number: vd tire size: 235/75/r15 ).
Defective tire still under manufacturers warranty blewout and caused damages. ( dot number: tire size: 235-75-15 ).
Vehicle began to swerved then consumer heard a loud pop after she pulled over she saw that the rear right firestone wilderness tire (p25570r16sl) blewout while driving. Nlm.
Firestone tires were cupping causing vibration in the steering, excessive noise and rough ride, consumer tires are not included in the recall but he believes they should be. Nlm.
I was traveling on the 280 freeway in san francisco traveling at 70 mph. I noticed the back of the vehicle started to sway to the side and the wheel of the vehicle was agile. After about a minute, I pulled to the side of the road. I walked to the rear of the vehicle and noticed that the right rear tire was completely torn apart. I am now concerned because of the recent recall of the firestone tires. However, my tires were not manufactured at the decatur( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 ).
I have had a blow out on one of the recalled tires. Obviously there is a danger of another one going, but I can't get anybody to talk to me(firestone and Ford). They say I have to wait my turn. I stil have the shredded tire. I would think this would merit some kind of priority. Luckily nobody was hurt, but who knows next time?( dot number: 027477 tire size: p235/75r15 ).
On interstate 76 in northeastern colorado, March 2000, air temperature 50 degrees, vehicle speed 75 mph, tire pressure 30 psi, vehicle load 2 adults and luggage, miles on vehicle and tires approx. 3500, first indication of trouble was increasing noise sounded like a helicopter was overhead and getting closer, then noticed control of vehicle was affected and realized a tire was going, decreased speed as rapidly as possible and was able to maintain control and get vehicle stopped, right rear tire was totally destroyed however tread seemed to be intact however was wrapped around rim and disc brake assembly, rim was on ground but did not damage rim or brake. Firestone would not cover replacement expense because dealer called it a "run-flat" and said he was unable to determine what caused the failure. With recent publicity and pictures in news media, I am very sure we had a tread separation, not a blow out or road damage. I feel very strongly that the 16 inch tires should also be included in the current recall. ( dot number: tire size: p255/70r16 ).
When this tire went flat recently the mechanic said "I've never seen a tire failure like this. It's like it cut itself open from the inside". Is it possible there are other tires in the current recall which may be unsafe ?( dot number: vnhl tire size: 15 inch ).
Left front wheel blew out pulling the car to the left and rolling it. The car was totaled. We took pictures of the vehicle that does show the tire but not a close up, but does show the tire. My husband suffered severe back spasms. (dot number: p235 tiresize: 15 inch).
Tires have been causing major problems and driving roughly - afraid to drive long distance. ( dot number: ).
Firestone tire delaminated causing vehicle to rollover and injure 2 consumers.
I have had two of these tires to fail after hitting a pothole in the road and with the first incident firesotne had no commet. I have not contacted them about the second. ( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 ).
While driving on the freeway at 70 mph the rear tire began to shake and the car began to swerve. I slowed down to find that the tire had shred all the way around. I drove it to the side were I contacted Ford roadside assistance @ 3:00 am. I took it into the nearest firestone to get a replacement. He could not find a reason why this had happened no cuts in the tire just seperation. According to my warranty I should have gotten a free replacement because of a defect the manager refused because he assumed the tire was not properly inflated I paid for a new tire. ( dot number: tire size: 23575r15 ).
Vehicle rides unstable at speeds of 55mph or greater, particularly on the freeway. Vehicle aggresively tracks and sways. Vehicle also overeacts when sudden move to the right or left is necessittated to avoid obstruction in the road or a collision with another vehicle. Alignment has been inspected 3 times and ruled out as the cause of the problem. New eddie bauer model (with wilderness at 16" tires,) and XLT model (with wilderness at 15" tires) Explorers were also test driven with the dealer (homer heller Ford) and found to have the same problem as the subject limited model. All have wilderness at tires stock from the factory. Recommend firestone recall all wilderness at tires made at all factories and 16" tires as well as 15". ( dot number: vncu-1px tire size: (255/70r16 ).
I wanted to note that on 4 different occasions I have had blowouts. For no apparent reason. Starting in September of 1999 and dating through April of 2000. I have the receipts for the tires that I have replaced, but looking at their reimbursement policy they may not reimburse me. I feel very unsafe in this vehicle! I have taken it in for the test and they are stating I still have 2 of the tires on from the plant of the recall. I am requesting all four tires because of the customer service I have received from these people. Basically they don't care. I want a totally different brand. I understand that I am one of many, but they have yet to contact me or answer any of my questions pertaining to this. I have called and left numerous messages also sent numerous emails and still have no respond. Please can you help me. I don't know the dot numbers on the tires that I replaced, but I feel with as many problems that I have had -they must be from that plant. Please respond to me what, if any results will be taken. I will also notify phil long Ford once again. Thank you, paula day. ( dot number: tire size: 15 ).
My daughter was driving the Explorer back to college when the right rear tire disintegrated causing the vehicle to roll twice. She was cut several places and bruised her left shoulder. The vehicle was totaled. The investigating officer put the cause of the accident to be the failure of the right rear firestone tire. ( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 ).
The original (firestone wilderness) right front tires shaking and making loud noise, dealer rotated the tires, however problem still continues.
Pe00020, original equipment; while driving on interstate at 60 mph suddenly it felt like car lifted, and then heard a pop. When car landed, consumer lost control, car swerved, and used a cement divider to help slow the vehicle down and to keep it from rolling over. The consumer feels the accident was due to faulty firestone wilderness xt tires and 2 people were injured. The wiper switch was replaced.
This report is for a previously owned Explorer, not the one identified by VIN and purchase date here. This car was purchased in 1995 and had 2 tires delaminate on two seperate occasions. On both occasions I was travelling on I-15 at about 70 to 75 mph, both were on hot days. One was a right rear tire, the other was a left front tire. I have had previous troubles with firestone tires shreading on a 1989 bronco ii. The bronco ii incident was taken to the firestone dealer. The exployer incident was reported to the Ford dealer. I have repeatedly requested of the Ford dealer that I get tires other than firestone, not only because of the problems I have had, but because they have refused to stand behind there warranties. I have been told that would cost me several hundred dollars more. When I reported the delaminations to the Ford dealer, I was told that these tires were designed for maximum mileage with minimum wear. This, I was told, required use of harder rubber, which was more difficult to bond to the rest of the tire. They said that the reason the tire delaminated is that is was a superior wearing tire and that I should be pleased that I got 50000 miles our of them. I, of course, strongly disagreed, and feel that a tire that delaminates with no outward signs of wear is extra dangerous. I now have another exployer, the one identified in this report, that has firestone wilderness at tires. I also have an individual that works with me that has an Explorer that has had 2 tires delaminate. Now that I find how wide spread this problem is and how long they've known about it, I don't understand why immediate action is not taken to replace these tires. I have already had two terifying experiences and I do not want to be in jeopardy any longer. The Ford dealer to which I have referred is the same as listing in this form as the present dealer. ( dot number: tire size: unknown ).
Problems with these tires are being reported on channel 11 news today and I have had a similar very frightening incident with a blow-out on my SUV. Both Ford and firestone refused to accept any fault or responsibility for the problem. My local garage tanglewilde auto service (houston 713-785-3470 steve munsey) tell me that they have had numerous customers (Ford Explorer owners) who have suffered the same problems. If these tires can be attributed to death and injury then they should be investigated for possible defect. ( dot number: 027477 tire size: p235/75r15 ).
