36 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2014

Transmission clunks when it is put into gear. I seen many complaints on the internet for this condition. Ford accepts no responsibility for this condition but with all of the same complaints I think it should be Fords problem to fix.

37 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2014

The car jolts really bad when you put it in reverse and then when you change to drive.

38 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2014

Vehicle stalls without warning making in unsafe to drive. Vehicle loses all power including engine, air, light. Instrument panel displays wrench, and engine light. Dealer diagnosed as throttle body. Replace and continues to die. No formal complaints, but google search of "2006 Ford stalling issues" shows that many of these vehicles have the same issue.

39 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2014

I started my car and, when I put in reverse, transmission wont shift. Put on drive, didn't shift, neither on neutral. When shifted to 3rd, transmission shifted. Put back in reverse and worked/.

40 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

When I place my 2006 Ford Explorer in reverse it sometimes hesitates then kicks into reverse with a hard knock and thump. Also when placed in reverse it slips then catches the gear with a hard thump. I don't know why its doing this but its not safe. The transmission also shifts real weird with hesitation all the time. Ford should have made this an issue that they should fix. Many people have bought these Ford Explorers not knowing this condition because its not a recall issue and therefore they . . . Like me buy the car with problems that haven't been resolved by Ford and have to foot a big transmission bill. I am asking Ford to work with us on this. I have been a loyal customer of Ford for over 10 years but this is soon to change. Thanks peter.

42 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2013

I bought my first Ford Explorer almost 8 years ago. I had absolutely no problems with this vehicle and felt very safe driving my newborn son. I had a second son and decided to buy a new Ford Explorer because it was such a dependable car. Now I am regretting that decision. I bought a 2006 Ford exploer at round 60,000 miles. It now has 70,000 and I have already had to get another transmission and it still has not fixed the problem. It jolts, lunges, and sometimes the transmission doesn't engage. I feel extremely unsafe trying to pull out at an intersection because the car starts to jolt and I have to slam on the gas in order for the car to go. It is horrible and I feel very unsafe driving; especially with my children in the car. Even if I am driving on the interstate I have to put the car into overdrive to stop the majority of the jolting, and that does not even guarantee it will stop. My husband is in the military and gone a great deal. He should not have to worry about the safety of his children or wife when he is deployed overseas or when he is training away from home. He is currently away from home for training, getting ready for deployment. He is calling every chance he gets to make sure the car has not broken down or we have not been in and accident due to this very horrible vehicle. If I had enough money I would buy another vehicle and tell everyone not to ever buy a Ford again. I think I am more upset with the fact that my husband is possible being sent overseas in October, and he cannot even go to war with the knowledge his family is safe. I really wish someone would understand that this is a huge problem and major safety problem. Please help all of the families with this defect.

43 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2013

Sometimes the transmission slams into gear so had that it feels like I just got rear ended with a big bang. The date above was the first time and ever since it keeps happening more often.

44 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2013

Issue. Hard jerks/clunks while shifting into reverse and them forward. Also feels as if your are being hit in bumper as you are stopping while transmission is down shifting. This seems to be an on going issue with so many 2006 Explorers, please look into a recall as this a defect with the Ford model. Also way too expensive for parts and labor! failure at mileage of 81,800. Too early to die with this mileage!.

45 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2013

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while traveling at unknown speeds, the vehicle suddenly jolted and failed to shift from third to fourth gear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was being repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 75,000.

46 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2013

On this date, the Explorer, while trying to back into driveway, would not go into reverse and was weak when trying to back, as if it did not go all the way into gear. Also gear shift was hard and would hesitate when accelerating and slowing down it would jerk into gear. Something really needs to be done cause I have not even had the vehicle one week and the dealership said everything looked fine. Well I had them change the transmission fluid as part of the deal and these are the problems that are occurring after that. Taking it back to be corrected. Really like vehicle so hope it is fixable.

47 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2013

Vehicle was just at the Ford dealership for over a week in March for transmission related issues, new radiator, etc. Just four months later, I am having the same issues that many others are writing about; hard shift into reverse, vehicle is jumping/jolting forward from a stop, rpm fluctuation while idling.

48 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2013

I was attempting to place the vehicle in reverse and the transmission hesitated and then slammed into reverse. As the vehicle has been driven over the past year this problem still occurs and also the vehicle will slam into gear during transmission shifting. There is also a problem on occasion when the transmission downshifts. It slams with such force that it feels like the vehicle was rear ended. I have been to a few repair shops and have gotten different reasons for the problem.

49 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2013

Transmission was not shifting from 1st to 2nd leaving you not moving in traffic or worse not being able to cross traffic. Also extreme hard shifts into reverse from park. I put a new (rebuilt)transmission in 4/18/13 and 9/9/15 it has only been two weeks and already it is doing the hard shift thing.

50 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2013

I have a major problem with my 2006 Explorer. It lunges, jolts, doesn't engage and sometimes the transmission slams into gear so had that it feels like I just got rear ended with a big bang! Ford does not take accountability that this is a real problem with the 06' Explorer despite hundreds upon hundreds of complaints regardng it as a safety issue. It is a major safey issue! I was almost hit by oncoming traffic when I tried to cross an intersection an the transmission wouldn't engage. At various times my vehicle wouldn't engage when I was stopped at an intersection or when it did engage it would jerk. Another time I slowed at a yield and when I pressed the gas the vehicle wouldn't move but when I took my foot off the gas it accelerated very quickly with jerking motion.

51 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2013

My 2006 Ford Explorer is leaking transmission oil. This leak is coming from the left quick connect fitting at the bottom of the radiator where it connects to the trans cooler line. I was told by the Ford company that there is no quick fix to this problem, they will have to "replace the radiator" for a cost of approx. . . . . $950. 00. The radiator cost $500 labor $450. The quick connect fitting that's causing the problem is $10. 00. Help, help, help.

52 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

Transmission was shuttering in reverse as well as 2 and 3 gears. For having this trouble at 70000 should not be acceptable and having a transmission go out can be dangerous. In doing research online transmission replacement is quite common on my type of Explorer. I suggest that Ford needs to have a mandatory recall on these vehicles.

53 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2013

Transmission jerks pretty badly at low speeds. Could definitely be a safety problem. This is a known problem that Ford won't recall.

54 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2013

Same as a bunch of complaints about transmission lunges hard jolt when shifting, wrench light comes on and off regarding the 2006 Ford Explorer, now they are telling me that I need to get a new transmission that will be $3500. 00 aprox. I have done some research and there are a lot of complains on this issue. Please do something!!.

55 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2013

Every time taking off from a stop. Vehicle would go 3 mph for 15 seconds, would then jolt and lung forward fast. This happened all the way to work for 27 miles. When I contacted Ford regarding this issue, they said they had no previous complaints. This is definately a safety issue. The vehicle almost hit the car in front of me several times. Later the vehicle would not go into reverse. I was stranded in the parking lot until the vehicle in front of me had moved.

56 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

I recently paid off my truck after years only to have the car jerk or lunges when I drive above 60 mph I have to pull over and restart car in order for it to reengage into gear. It also lunges backward when putting into reverse as well as when I go around a curve or down a hill over 40 mph it lunges as well. I am single mother who has only this car as transportation to take my 6 year old son to school and drive me to work and I am scared to do so because of the lunging. I have also paid 3000 to aamco transmissions to have a rebuild transmission put into the truck and the issue is still not resolved have taken it back into the transmission shop 3 times in the last month and they still have not corrected the issue. . . . This is a serious issue that Ford needs to resolve before someone gets seriously hurt or injured.

57 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2013

In the past month the vehicle was taking multiple attempts to start up. Once I would get it started and drove it down the road at a stop light it would be jolty, vibrating feeling and then turn off. On two separate occasions while I was driving the vehicle down the road it actually shut off on me. I took it to Ford who charged me $100 to do a diagnostic test and could not find the problem and suggested that I take it to transmission specialist. I took it to aamco they found that there was a faulty screw that came apart and was shredded inside the transmission. $4k later the vehicle is fixed and working properly.

58 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/19/2013

Was driving the truck and was coming to a stop, the vehicle jumped forward as if someone hit me from behind. It was rather aggressive and I almost rear ended a car in front of me at the light. Luckly there was not a cross walk where a pedestrian could've been hit. This happens on a regular basis and in my opinion needs to be addressed ASAP, or Ford will be dealing with a rather large law suit in their future. It is clear this is occuring with many others and enough is enough. Something needs to be done about these transmission problems.

59 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2013

Just like many others who have reported the same issue with their 2006 Ford Explorer, when backing out of the driveway, I put the vehicle in reverse. There was a jerk as the transmission seemed to finally engage. I thought the trans broke at the time? this has happened more then once. I have also experienced the same issue as others with the delayed shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. My Explorer has just 88k miles on it.

60 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

At low speed, the vehicle slams into 2nd gear. It is quite disturbing, especially in the city where there are stop signs and traffic signals from block to block. It feels like the vehicle is being crashed into from behind - constantly. The worst part is, after reading literally hundreds of people voicing the exact same complaint, there is no clear cause or resolution. The vehicle shifts fine, for instance, when getting onto an expressway from a complete stop -- throttling straight through from 1st to o/d, there doesn't seem to be a problem. It is only an issue when throttling short distances needing only 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. Also, though slightly less frequent in my case, getting into reverse can be just as unsettling. I would say, 1 out of 15 times, the vehicle slams into reverse moments after placing the shifter into the reverse position. Now, I will finish by adding that this is my second Explorer. My first was a 2003. At around 100,000mi. , it too had the same exact issues. I thought the problem was 'unique' to that particular vehicle. When it started happening to my newer model, I began to research. I am 34yrs old and I have owned five Ford vehicles in my lifetime. I am confident in saying Ford motor CO. Will lose a loyal customer permanently if they do not acknowledge and address this problem. Shameful. Careless. Point being, in all of the complaints on this exact issue, the transmission 'works' but it does not work correctly!.

61 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

Same as a bunch of complaints about transmission lunges hard jolt when shifting, wrench light comes on and off regarding the 2006 Ford Explorer, now they are telling me that I need to get a new transmission that will be $3500. 00 aprox. I have done some research and there are a lot of complaints on this issue. Please do something!! I can't afoord this an have to borrow family money to get back on the road.

62 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2012

This vehicle has been jerking when I am going slow to the point as if someone hit me in the rear end of the vehicle. It is a very strong jerking sensation enough to frighten any reasonable individual. It also has been trying to accelerate when my foot was on the brake pedal and not in cruise control while going well below the minimum speed necessary to use the cruise control. The auto acceleration was while at 10 miles per hour or less and my foot was on the brake. This has become more and more frequent and I am worried it could be the computer, the transmission, the engine, or a control system not functioning properly. This has happened on multiple occasions with passengers in the vehicle. My parents were frightened when it happened. I am worried the thing may accelerate on its own and hurt another vehicle(s) or its passengers. There hasn't be a fire or crash yet but it is my fear that will happen unless this safety issue is meaningfully addressed. I already had certified auto repair of rockville MD look at the vehicle and they told me they couldn't find anything wrong following a computer diagnostic. The jerking and auto acceleration are becoming more and more frequent and I am reporting this because I am concerned about the safety of my vehicle and others on the road. Also, there are heavy virbations occuring during the idling process and I am not a mechanic but this may have something to do with the safety concerns on the vehicle.

63 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Explorer. While driving approximately 40 mph, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal but the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. The vehicle then rapidly accelerated to approximately 60 mph and began to decelerate independently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing where the technician advised the contact that the transmission would have to be rebuilt or replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 74,000.

64 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2012

When vehicle is put in reverse the transmissions jolts extremely hard into gear. Feels like your vehicle go hit. Seems very unsafe. When driving it seems like the transmission jerks into 2, n 3rd gear.

65 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2012

Vehicle jerks as if the transmission fell down when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear or when decelerating. Also, feels like some one rammed into the back. Vehicle moves jumps forward while stopping at a traffic signal. I have missed hitting the vehicles in the front a couple of times.

66 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

Whenever I put my SUV in reverse it jolts and it feels as if my transmission has fallen out. I also notice it does the same when I try to put in "drive" some times. My car is well maintained and I have always bought Ford trucks. I'm scared to drive my children in the car at times because my truck has a mind of it's own and decides when it wants to accelerate and when it doesn't. Please give some insight. I've seen many message boards and it seems as if this is a problem across the board for this make and model.

67 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

Forceful driveline bump while braking - below 10 mph.

68 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2012

While trying to stop my vehicle suddenly accelerated and I had to put it in neutral to come to a stop. I pulled into a parking lot and shut the engine off and then started it up again and my engine revved at around 4000 rpm. The only way I could drive the vehicle home was to keep constant heavy pressure on the brakes. It always wanted to accelerate.

69 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

No events leading up to failure. Regular vehicle usage. After 5 years and 85000 miles, the transmission began clunking and hesitating to shift. When shifting into reverse or drive, the transmission jolts violently. This failure has not yet been corrected but has been diagnosed and a rebuilt transmission is on order. I am complaining now because so many similar reports have also been filed across the internet. Upon seeing all the complaints I decided to lodge mine for more to see. This is a huge problem and is going to cost me 3500. 00 to fix since the vehicle is no longer under warranty.

70 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2012

Transmission started jerking while going down the road. It also began jerking when shifting into drive or reverse. I had originally thought maybe the fluid could be low but after seeing all of the people that this has happened to and no-one being able to get anything done I am considering looking into a class action suit for all of the owners. I also had problems with the traction control while on a vacation in the mountains. That made the engine rev but both rear wheels stopped moving on a blind hillside curve. Ford needs to do something with these vehicles.
