Vehicle in motion on interstate highway which was being resurfaced. Upon the transition from smooth pavement to pavement which was being scraped for resurfacing, the "power steering assist failure" and "service advancetrac" messages were displayed and there was no power steering assistance and the directional signals only work by holding the stalk in the proper position manually. This occurred twice during a trip from charlotte, nc to fort worth, TX. In both instances, the road conditions were the same - transition from smooth to undulating pavement.
I was driving on highway 45 in illinois in my 2015 Ford Explorer and was slowing down for a red light when my power steering failed and a warning came on in the vehicle information display stating "steering assist fault " service required. I was three blocks from the Ford dealer and drove there. Steering was very difficult and I was fortunate to be so close to the dealer. A tech did a pin point inspection on the vehicle and the next day I was told that there was corrosion in the power steering control module terminal contacts. Grease was applied and I was charged $323. 00 . I was advised that if this happened again that I may need to replace the power steering control module on the vehicle and this would cost $2300. 00. This vehicle has 33500 miles on it and is garage kept with regular maintenance . I asked why the terminal contacts weren't checked during regular maintenance which was done three months ago and was told it is not part of the inspection .
Driving on highway when the steering failed. Dealer says that the electronic power steering failed and needs to be replaced. Vehicle has approx 80k miles. I have found many instances of this same occurrence when searching online. Fortunately in this instance no accident or injury but why has a recall not been issued and why is Ford ignoring the problem.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Ford Explorer. While driving approximately 60 mph, the lane detection failure message suddenly appeared and the power steering failed. The steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. After stopping the vehicle and restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who found diagnostic code: c200d and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the local dealer. The vehicle was taken to jones Ford of north charleston (5757 rivers Ave, north charleston, south carolina), but the code was no longer present after restarting the vehicle several times. My wife was driving at 30mph when power steering failed took it to shop and they said it was electronic power steering module that failed. A 3 year old vehicle with 40000 miles on it . Looks like alot more people have had same problem.
While driving down a gravel road at approximately 35 mph, the power steering stopped working. The vehicle displayed a message advising the power steering assist had failed and a service advancetrac was showing. I was able to drive the vehicle home, but it was very difficult to turn. Luckily, my wife was not driving down a busy highway or in a curve as that would have easily resulted in a bad accident. The local Ford dealership advised the steering gear assembly is bad.

The dealer casa Ford (5815 montana Ave, el paso, TX 79925, (915) 779-2272) was unable to replicate and diagnose the vehicle with no dtc. The power steering fails while driving. This has happened about 7-8 times in the past year. The worst time was when it failed in a slow, tight turn. When the power steering failed the steering self aligned back to straight. This happened in my kid's elementary school parking lot. It easily could have led to a bad accident or hitting a pedestrian because the vehicle went in an unintended direction. The attached picture is from one of the other 7-8 times this occurred, thus the mismatch in mileage from the picture and that listed in the complaint.
Power steering failed at a high rate of speed.
While making a left turn on to a residential street the power steering failed. It became extremely difficult to keep from running up on the sidewalk. Had my wife been driving she would not have been able to steer the vehicle, most likely resulting in a serious accident. Steering system failure alert appeared on dash read out. Was able to pull over safely to the side of the road. Shut the engine off, re-started, no change. Shut off a second time, restarted and alert disappeared and the steering was functioning. Was able to drive home, called Ford to make arrangements to have the vehicle inspected. While backing out of my driveway the next day in route to the dealership, a heavy clunk sound was heard. I went through the same motions again but could not repeat the clunk noise. Drove the vehicle approximately 20 miles to the dealership for inspection. They removed and replaced the steering gear which is the entire rack. I asked an adviser if they knew the cause of the failure and or if the new part being installed is the same as what was removed or if there was an upgraded version. They were unable to verify any upgrades relating to the failure which has me worried since my wife also drives the vehicle and there is no assurance that the failure won't occur again. My extended warranty covered the majority of the costs. I paid a $100. Deductible. I am reporting this because I'm convinced that is not an isolated incident due to other year and model Fords displaying the same problems. I also want it documented in case it happens again. Copy of repair order attached.
A power steering warning came up, then later the power steering failed. It later returned. We took it to a dealer and they has to replace the power steering angle sensor assembly. About 6 weeks later 4-17-17 warning comes on again. Take it back to dealer and they now say it is probably power steering motor with a cost of $2000+. When my wife originally felt the loss of steering she was on the highway going down the road, not turning. She felt it tighten up.
