My 2015 Explorer's power steering has went out. I also had a 2016 Explorer that the same thing happened to. I had a warranty on the 2016 model so the dealership replaced the steering rack and pinion on it. But my 2015 model is my husband's only vehicle to drive to work and we do not have 2500$ to get it fixed. This is unacceptable! there have been so many people with the same issue I can't understand why there isn't a recall for such a dangerous expensive problem.
Power steering has gone out in my Explorer with only 62k miles. Have been told that it is the steering rack and pinion that needs to be replaced. My steering wheel locked up going 35 mph in normal traffic and I almost hit oncoming traffic. Hundreds or even thousands of other people are having this problem! Ford is lucky that my two small children were not in the car when this happened. There really needs to be review on these cars and a recall be made before someone dies!.
7 months ago started hearing a grinding sound whenever I turn the car and reported it to the service department of the Ford dealer when I had my oil change. They reported that they found nothing wrong. However the issue continues and is occurring more frequently. Yesterday I brought to the dealer for an oil change and reported the the same problem. This time they said that my rack and pinion steering needs to be changed a the cost of $2500. This is unexpected as I've never owned a car that had a this problem. Although I have 100k miles in it, all of it is from freeway driving. Now when I researched this issue and it is a common problem with this vehicle. The dealer that I go to must know this iand reassured me that there was nothing wrong with my vehicle when I first let them know a few months ago, I thinks they were negligent in letting me know and at the very least warned me of what could happen. Now I hesitate to drive this vehicle for safety reasons. Good thing I have not had any steering issues while on the road. But for some unknowing driver, a frozen steering wheel could spell disaster.
Suddenly, while backing out of a parking spot we noticed a loud popping sound while turning towards the right. On the drive home it popped every time we turned right. After taking it to our main mechanic, he informed us about a steering gear / rack and pinion problem. My vehicle has 90,000. I drive it maybe 80 miles a week. It doesn't make any sense for it to be having this extent of a problem from wear and tear upon my own research I found hundreds of people with the exact issue with the rack and pinion. Also leaving them dumbfounded as to their Ford Explorer having <110,000mi with a steering gear issue that averages a cost of $2500. This is absolutely a dangerous Ford problem that needs to be recalled and resolved immediately.
Loud popping, clunking noise coming from passenger front wheel. Steering becomes difficult to control. More dominant noise at low speed. I took the vehicle to a local ase certified mechanic. They inform me that the rack and pinion needs replaced. I only have 71,500 miles on the vehicle. Within further research, I have found hundreds of complaints with this same issue.
The rack and pinion steering went out on our 2015 Ford Explorer and had to be replaced. The vehicle started making a weird rubbing noise at low speeds. When I googled the issue, I found out that Ford had a recall for 2011-2017 Ford Explorers for the rack and pinion steering, however they were only for vehicles manufactured in chicago and apparently my vehicle was not covered by the recall. I have attached repaid invoice. The cost of the repair was over $2500 (see jobs 1 & 2 on the attached invoice.
Popping/knocking noise when turning at low speed, gradually get getting more severe over time. In addition there have been instances where the car has not turned as the steering wheel is moved. Ford garage has diagnosed this as a steering rack and pinion unit problem. With on 40k unacceptable early failure of this component with a $3,000 repair cost.
Popping/knocking noise when turning at low speed, gradually get getting more severe over time. In addition there have been instances where the car has not turned as the steering wheel is moved. Ford garage has diagnosed this as a steering rack and pinion unit problem. With on 77k this seems to be an unacceptable early failure of this component.
Power steering stopped while driving. This is not a typical power steering pump, it is electronic. When a normal one fails, you can still steer easily when moving. It only becomes hard when stopped or moving slow. The electronic one gets extremely hard even at highway speeds. I have brought it to the dealership which diagnosed it as the rack and pinion. I have seen online that there are many that have failed with the same issue for multiple years from around 2011 on which tells me it is fairly common even on vehicles with low mileage.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving and attempting to make a left turn, there was an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to carriage Ford inc (908 e. Lewis and clark pkwy, clarksville, in 47129, (612)284-4444) to be diagnosed. The strut bearings were replaced however, after test driving the vehicle, the contact was informed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired at a cost of $2,300. The contact was concerned that the failure was due to a defect in the manufacturing of the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 54,000.
Popping sounds coming from right side wheel. Took to Ford dealer to be serviced and the told me the gear stop in the rack and pinion as broken off and needs to be replaced and would put me at $2100. They also told me if I did not want to replace it at this time I could leave it alone and continue with the popping sound or they could cut it off but then I would need to be careful and not overly turn the steering wheel.
Driving on a two lane highway and the power steering completely failed. We were told by the dealership where we purchased the car to bring it in but it sounded like "steering assist fault" since that was the error message, duh. It was cost $500 for an alignment? replaced faulty rack and pinion gear and checked alignment(should be ok since they aligned it the same day) total bill $2291. 00 this is a 2015 Explorer limited that has been in the shop several times for car a carbon monoxide leak in the cabin of SUV for repairs, power seat repairs and interior door panel coming apart.
Steering started making a grinding noise at 55k miles. Sound is most pronounced when turning at slow speeds. Dealership and local shop confirm steering rack and pinion need to be replaced. They advised this is a common problem with Ford Explorers. Dealership advised the warranty expired 1 month ago.
We were driving on the freeway from a Mini vacation at 70 miles per hour when our 2015 Ford Explorer which only had 45,000 miles logged began to lose steering power. We almost crashed into the vehicle next to us on I-94 going at a very rapid speed of 70 miles per hour. Immediately my husband began to slow down and tried to move to the furthest right lane. He was having a tremendous amount of difficulty as our car would not allow us to steer. He finally made it to the exit lane. At this time we needed to pull off of the hwy and get a friend to tow us home. We took our vehicle into the dealership where we purchased it and they told us that they needed to recalculate our computer at the fee of $100. Within two weeks the same problem began to happen again. We took our Explorer back to the dealer to repair this problem. We were now told that it is a rack and pinion problem and it could be upwards of $2,000 to repair. It is not covered in our extended warranty and it is not covered by the upcoming recall that we have scheduled to repair which ironically is a rear suspension repair which if not fixed will cause a problem with steering. In my opinion this problem will seriously harm or even kill the owner and family of a vehicle that this can happen to as it is impossible to control your vehicle when this occurs. I hope that this issue will be resolved by Ford as this vehicle is very popular for families due to its size and this could be a fatal mistake to drive this car if this issue happens.
The rack and pinion locked up as we were pulling out of my driveway. I was 9m pregnant and my 4yr old was in the back. Cant help but think about what would have happened had it locked up going around a curve. The repair shop I took it to said this was really common in the Ford Explorers and they have 146 service records on this one issue.
I purchased a 2015 Ford Explorer sport with 90k miles from a Ford dealer in December. A week later I noticed that every time I turned right I would hear a clicking noise. I also heard a humming noise from the wheels. I immediately took it to the dealer and explained to them the issue. I told them that if they don't fix the issue I was gonna return the car back to them. They changed the wheel bearings and the humming noise decreased. The technician said he tightened something from the spare tire compartment and that's what was making the clicking sound. Months later as we continued driving the car the clicking would happen on occasion. I originally thought that it was something in the spare tire compartment. So I looked all over the place and nothing the noise continued occasionally. Now in July it began happening more often. I took it to the dealer again and had to pay a diagnostic fee even though I told them its the same issue as before. Now a different technician says that the steering rack and pinion is broken and needs to be replaced or the steering wheel could lock up on us on the road and cause an accident. I asked why they didn't tell me that the first time and he couldn't explain. So I've been driving a time bomb for months. The 2011-2014 model had a recall on this issue. I can't believe they wouldn't include all the years with the same issue. The steering system should be the most reliable part of the car because it ensures that you're in control of you safety. I have read many complaints on the steering rack and pinion for this vehicle.
When steering left or right at a standstill, steering makes a popping or clicking noise. My guess is it is either rack and pinion assembly or suspension parts. In addition, rear end has a bad rattle even on smooth roads. There is about 59,500 miles on the SUV and it was just state inspected. We are afraid to drive it. Checked complaint boards and there are many similar problems.
I have a 2015 Ford Explorer XLT and the steering rack and pinion needs replacing. It can stop at anytime causing an accident.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Ford Explorer. While attempting to make a turn, the steering lost power and "steering fault assist needs service" appeared on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to vaughn Ford Lincoln (318-335-0710, located at 835 highway 165 s, oakdale, la 71463) where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000.
50k only and the rack and pinion steering column is failing.
As we were turning into a parking space there was a popping sound so I immediately took the car to the dealer. We were told that the rack and pinion was defective which is the second time this has happened in a Ford around the 40,000 mile mark. If the rack had failed at high speed it could well have been fatal.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Ford Explorer. The contact heard a squealing sound when turning the vehicle in either direction. The vehicle was taken to autofair Ford in manchester (1475 s willow st, manchester, nh 03103, (603) 634-1001). The contact took the vehicle to the same dealer six weeks before to have the driver's side wheel bearing replaced under a warranty. The dealer performed an 100 point inspection and recommended several repairs that needed to be performed. The dealer had been aggressively soliciting the contact to trade in the vehicle and checked to see if she wanted to act on any of the service repair recommendations. Regarding the squealing noise, the dealer diagnosed that the entire rack and pinion needed to be replaced and an alignment was needed. The repairs would cost $2,215. The manufacturer was contacted online and stated that there was no recall for the failure. The failure mileage was 49,100.
Lane keeping steering assist is electric motor assist. The rack & pinion steering gear motor malfunctioned, leaving the steering without any assist, resulting in manual (extremely difficult to steer) steering. In this case, no crash resulted, but required rack & pinion required replacement. Replacement cost ~$2200. 00 at a Ford dealership.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Ford Explorer. While driving and attempting to turn, the steering wheel seized and then returned to its normal position. The vehicle was taken to crouse Ford (11 antrim blvd, taneytown, MD 21787, (877) 782-7280) where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 90,000.
When we turn the wheel to the right it has a loud popping noise during driving or stationary its progressing from a popping and something the steering wheel gets stuck. Told by two different mechanics that the popping noise has to do with strut and cv joint and electric steering gear and rack and pinion going bad. Our Explorer only has 91000 miles. Both mechanics say this is odd that this is going on for a 2015. That we should check for recalls.
While driving in the city the steering became difficult, then the notification system said steering failure please stop, the drive selector failed and the blinkers failed all at the same time. After stopping the steering was unturntable by the average person. Had this failed at freeway speed it would have been deadly if not fatal. After towing the vehicle to the dealer they refused to do anything warranty wise. The vehicle has 37k miles. They failure was the eps and the rack and pinion had to be replaced. 2k dollars. I read on the internet of over 65 instances of this happening on the same year make and model, all with low miles.
At approximately 57,000 miles, my complete steering mechanism failed as I was driving my vehicle down a road, while out of state on a vacation. Both of my children were in the vehicle when this occurred and luckily no one was injured. The vehicle was towed to a Ford dealership where the complete rack and pinion system had to be replaced ($1,900. 00). While waiting for a tow truck, I located a Ford recall had been completed for the previous three or four model years (2011-2014) for the exact same failure. This is a known issue and I don't understand why my model year (2015) isn't included. We were on a vacation and traveled down the interstate and glad this didn't occurred while driving 75 mph.
Vehicle only has 41000 miles and the rack and pinion is making a cracking noise when turning to the right. Vehicle has not fail as getting the steering lock but needs to be replace to prevent an accident.
Sport model front end has had a loud popping/ creak noise when going over bumps at a angle and also sharp low speed manuevers ( pulling into tight parking space) since it was basicly brand new. Loud ticking noise from front hubs at low speeds first visit to Ford was at 9,000 miles they could not duplicate it. Vehicle now has 32,000 miles roughly, the popping and creaking has gotten worse my wife was leaving work and was backing out of her parking spot and the rack and pinion locked up on her. Mulltiple wanring lights came on and she was unable to steer the vehicle. She called me and I told her to cycle the key multiple times and see if it will reset to be able to drive to my work so I could scan it and see what codes it has. She took surface streets to my work. It had codes p0022: cam timing over retarted p052d: cold start cam timing over retarted p193e: a/c clutch request signal u0121: lost communication with abs control module c1b00: steering angle sensor this is the second time cam phaser codes came up. They replaced cam phaser this last visit and vehicle still stumbles/misfire feel at idle. They were "unable to duplicate" rack and pinion/ suspension noise. My wife does not feel safe driving vehicle. It has been getting random hard spots while driving. I took it to another local Ford dealer and they want to charge me for diagnostic if they cant "duplicate" I just got done paying for 3 weeks of rental and cant risk several hundred more dollars to have them, say they cant duplicate it. So I will be picking up the Explorer and I am now stuck with a unsafe vehicle as the steering could "lock up" again at any point. There are multiple cases just like mine that I found and I am not willing to risk having my wife and child have the rack and pinion fail while she is going down the freeway we got lucky with it locking up while at low speed the first time.
There is a popping noise when turning the vehicle's steering wheel from left to right while parked or maneuvering to make adjustments. Also, while driving and turning left, the vehicle's steering locks and I have to snatch the steering wheel to the right in order to get the vehicle to go straight. This has happened on several occasions and I took it to the dealer on may 17th and they're in the process of replacing the steering gear or what the service advisor told me was known as the rack and pinion. My vehicle has less than 30,000 miles and I haven't run into anything or over anything to cause this problem. According to the service advisor the manufacturer's warranty covers the replacement, however, I'm stuck with having to drive a rental at my expense because of a defect from the manufacturer. I noticed there were other owners who had problems with the steering and they experienced failure that led to their wheel assembly coming off while driving. This is concerning because according to Ford, I have no recalls specific to my VIN number, but this problem seems to be more widespread and Ford motor CO. Should be proactive in addressing this issue before someone gets killed.
