Tried to put the vehicle into reverse from park and the column shifter broke off. Vehicle could not be driven and was towed to a transmission business. Cost to repair is $1300. I bought this vehicle in 2004 used. I've had the rear transmission seals, shocks, tires, front window and the entire steering column replaced.
Vehicle was parked in a parking lot. Went to place the car in reverse to back out of the parking space and the shifter broke off. Fortunately the car was still in park, but would have been disasterous if the car had gone into reverse. We were finally able to turn off the ignition, but could not get the key out. Had to lock the car and leave it until the next morning when the Ford dealership opened. Towed the car to the dealership and were told the entire steering column would have to be replaced at a cost of $961. I asked them to contact Ford as it was obviously a vehicle defect. They responded that I would need to call Ford myself. Spoke with a rep. Of Ford, and they called the local service manager, then told me there was nothing that they could do. The problem was ours to fix at our cost.

Circumstances with our newly leased 2004 Ford Explorer are such that we are requesting that you provide us with a new vehicle of similar year, make and model. This vehicle was purchased “new on June 25, 2004 and has had numerous mechanical malfunctions that have made it hazardous and dangerous to operate. The 2 very serious malfunctions are not minor, but are of a very serious nature. 1. Vehicle’s engine shuts off this has occurred in situations on the highway that have been extremely hazardous to the passengers and those of the general public. When this malfunction occurs, it occurs without warning. There is no consistency to when this happens, but it happens often enough that as operators we have lost confidence in the vehicle. We are reluctant to have children in it or to take it on the highway. It is without question that the defects in our 2004 Ford Explorer are serious. 2. Difficulty putting the vehicle in gear it is becoming increasingly difficult to put the vehicle into gear. In other words, when you put the vehicle into reverse, it goes not engage in the gear. At other times, it will engage the gear after a prolonged delay. This is particularly dangerous when you step on the accelerator and it "unexpectedly" jumps into gear after a prolonged delay. This is extremely dangerous for the passengers, but particularly for any pedestrians walking behind the vehicle. Both of these malfunctinos present a danger and a hazard and are very serious defects. Inacceptable response from Ford dealership regards, john piscal cfo inner city education foudation jpiscal@icefla. Org 323. 294. 8515 mr. Michael piscal – president & ceo.
Placing the vehiclw in reverse, vehicle hesitates and then engages with a "clunk"; shifting into drive the same phenomenon occurs randemly. The major concern is that this jumping into gear happens sporadically as well !.
Gear shift fell off. The metal piece attached to the steering column broke.
Transmission got stuck in neutral when column shifter was put in the park position. As my wife got out to help her sister with her new born and baggage the Explorer started rolling, my niece (in the back seat) got scared and jumped out of the vehicle and got ran over. The vehicle hit a pole and trapped my niece under the rear tire. I have since taken it to dealership 3 times so far, and it is still not fixed. Actually since I have gotten the Explorer back it has started to clung really hard going into reverse, and has got stuck between third and fourth gear. While driving, causing the rpms to shoot up. I am waiting on Ford to finally resolve this issue as I have been given the run around and am getting very frustrated.
Consumer stated that gear shift broke off, preventing consume r from driving the vehicle. Also, electric windows broke, one at a time.
When shifting gear from "park" to "drive" the column shifter was noticably difficult to move. Without warning , the column shifter fell off, resulting in not having a car to drive. I am currently trying to have the problem fixed.

Experiencing a clicking noise from the transfer case at low speed (forward and reverse).
I started my vehicle and when I started to move noticed that the transfer case was in 4 wheel drive, low range. I did not put it in 4wd, I do not know why it was engaged. I attempted to return it to 2wd and nothing happened. I was forced to drive it at 10 mph to a garage. They were able to get the transfer case out of 4wd low, and into 4wd high range so I could drive it on the road. They also provided me with NHTSA recall information on the generic electronic module as it relates to electrically operated 4wd systems. The campaign number is 00v072000. When I checked with Ford they said the recall doesn't cover my vehicle, even though exhibits symptoms of the problem specified in the recall, and matches all of the criteria in the recall I. E. , make, model, year, engine, transmission, and date of manufacture. I am wondering why my vehicle isn't included in this recall, and what I can do to get it included in the recall.

This Explorer is equipped with awd system. During the incident the vehicle spun out on ice but the 4wd did not engage, so the front wheels had no truction. Due to this I could not regain control before the vehickle smashed in ti the berrier and flipped over and rolled 180 degries. The vehicle is a total loss.
Transfer case failed with no reason. The 4 wheel drive is never used. When being fixed they found chuncks of metal in the transfer case. It appeared to be defective. Ford is is denying this.
Keeps trying to shift into 4-wheel drive. It does have 4-wheel switch on dashboard.

- wheel drive high and low activated while driving at 30mph causing the steering to lock which resulted in a crash.
4-wheel drive activated while driving at 30mph, causing the steering to lock which resulted in a crash.
Leaking between case.
Vehicle has been taken in 4 times - some parts replaced -dealer can not find problem. Ford motor company contacted not resolved. Vehicle 4- wheel drive low and high lights blink while driving then the vehicle will not go into 4 wheel drive. After you turn off car and restart the system resets and 4 wheel drive works. This problem could be dangerious and could cause an accident if 4 wheel drive does not work and this would also probably include auto 4 wheel drive mode for slippery conditions.
Transfer case went out traveling between speeds of 40-60 mph, no pulling power in gear.
While turning right / left the vehicle vibrates in the rear of the vehicle. Dealer says it's normal. Also, while test driving vehicle dealer claimed it acted like the clutches in the position unit were grabbing. So they added a friction modifier to rear differential and transfer case. Problem somewhat diminished, but not entirely solved.

Vehicle would lock into and out of 4-wheel drive rapidly on dry, smooth pavement for no reason ,causing vehicle to lurch and lag ( jerking ) and causing front left wheel hop and vibration. Dealership has removed the 4 wheel drive capabilty of this vehicle to reslove the problem instead of repairing. The originally equipped 4 wheel drive Explorer is now only 2 wheel drive. Indicator lights on dash now continuously flash providing somewhat of a drivers distraction. Also vehicle has a loud squeal in front end at speeds from 1 thru 40 mph which one failed repair attempt has been made. Also vehicle engine has loud mechanical engine noise ( knocking and banging ) in upper engine area.
Intermittently 4- wheel drive light comes on . The dealer has determined that the 4-wheel drive has burned out.
4- wheel drive indicator light would flash continually, indicating tha t 4- wheel drive was inoperative. On two occasions vehicle has been at dealer's shop for repairs, and dealer informed consumer that gem module part replacement has been on back order, and was waiting to receive the parts. Can NHTSA help in this matter or provide additional information.
