2 Transmission Failure problem of the 2017 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/09/2020

Ford continues to make unsuccessful repairs on continuous transmission issue despite 6 failed attempts since first reported October 2019 at only 11,000 miles. Car will not accelerate into higher gear when traveling at high rates of speed. Ford continues to neglect many written notifications of dangerous events caused by transmission failure as well as blatantly refuses to diagnose reported errors present on car and continues to knowingly and negligently put its consumer and their passengers in danger by refusing to acknowledge ongoing issue that has now had 6 unsuccessful repairs made to attempt to resolve transmission issue. Consumer has desperately requested a full replacement/refund for defective vehicle for her safety and her family's but Ford has repeatedly denied 3 buy back requests now citing that only 2 repairs have been made when clearly this is not the case.

The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. The contact confirmed that the vehicle was not included in a power train recall. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000.

4 Transmission Failure problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/25/2020

Strong jerking when slowing for corner or stop sign. . . Sudden abrupt downshifting. Transmission failure at 8,500. Told that a ring or clip in the transmission had broken, allowing some parts to move forward. Currently waiting for a complete transmission replacement, but transmissions are evidently back-ordered.

The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 111,000. Jo.

6 Transmission Failure problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

The vehicle began to overheat when driving at an incline. As soon as the vehicle was level there were no overheating issues. I took the vehicle to the dealership and was advised that the vehicle was overheating due to the grill shutters being stuck closed and as a result the transmission was failing and needed a partial rebuild. The vehicle was still eligible for certain repairs under the warranty, mileage 58,120, so Ford covered the partial transmission rebuild as they determined was fit. The grill shutters malfunctioning and being stuck closed were not covered under warranty but the malfunction was a major contributing factor to the transmission failure and overheating of the vehicle. Repairs were completed in may 2019. In November 2019 and approx. 2k miles out of warranty and just slightly 2k more miles since the transmission rebuild and grill shutter replacement, the vehicle began to overheat again. The overheating would occur consistently when sitting idle or in motion on streets and on highways. The vehicle was taken to the Ford dealership again for diagnosis. It was determined that the head gasket was blown which was causing the vehicle to overheat. Ford advised that due to the grill shutters being stuck closed that ultimately was the cause of the damage to the engine and the head gasket being blown. The malfunctioning grill shutters are a major issue that should be fixed on Fords behalf so that additional engine damage doesn't occur. Ford is now not covering the head gasket being blown/overall engine damage even though this was ultimately caused by the malfunctioning grill shutters. The vehicle is not drivable without overheating and the overheating could cause a fire which could be extremely dangerous and in some cases, fatal.

7 Transmission Failure problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/18/2019

I purchased a 2020 Ford Explorer at sames Ford in laredo, TX. The vehicle was received 11 sept 2019. The vehicle broke down on 18 sept 2019 in indiana (mileage 1896) while in motion on the highway. The vehicle was towed to auto park Ford in stergis, michigan. The problem was the transmission oil cooler, which I now know is endemic to this model. I was told the failure of the transmission oil cooler had also caused the transmission to fail. The transmission & oil cooler were replaced and I had to drive from new york to michigan at my own expense to get the car when it was repaired and returned to me 4 oct 2019. This vehicle broke down again while in motion on the highway with the same problem (transmission oil cooler) 5 Nov 2019 (mileage approx. . 5,300) in laredo, TX. At that time, they took the original car back and gave me an identical, new 2020 Ford Explorer which subsequently broke down with the exact same transmission oil cooler failure.

In order to get home I had to manually shift with gear shifter and attempt to skip over third gear. Was driving on city streets. Vehicle has 174000 miles on it.

13 Transmission Failure problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/14/2017

Transmission just failed on the highway. No forward or reverse gears. The occurrence of transmission failures for this vehicle is extremely high and well documented. The transmission on this vehicle is unreliable and unsafe because of poor engineering. My family was luck to not get rear ended on the highway resulting in injury or worse.

16 Transmission Failure problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/01/2016

On two separate occasions my 2016 Ford Explorer sport four-wheel-drive, with approximately 6100 miles, the automatic transmission failed to stay in the park position. On the first occasion in June 2016 the vehicle rolled away after exiting the vehicle at a shopping center parking lot and had to be chased down! thankfully caught up with it and jumped back in before it hit someone or another vehicle! the second occurrence was on August 1, 2016 parked in front of a commercial building and again the vehicle's automatic transmission did not stay in the park position and began to roll away, thankfully this time before exiting the vehicle. Initially thought the first time was a fluke but since it has happened twice it is a safety concern that needed to be reported.

19 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/15/2015

Air bag wiring harness to short : every time you move the seat the air bag light would come on $683. 00 repair service technical service bulletin from Ford no compensation for repairs miles 22,000. Front wheel bearing failure left and right 60,000 miles. Rear spring failure 75000 miles front spring failure 75000 miles. Fuel tank registers 1/4 tank when tank is empty 45000 miles transmission cellinoid failure 28000 miles and 800000 miles heater control module 70000 miles. Intake leak 80000 miles. Rear wheel bearing and axle seals 100,000 miles. Other than that great car. If Ford cared about its customer it would have fixed the transmission problems they had six flaws from day one of production from 1990 ---- why Ford if you had a real transmission it would make up for all the other failure built into this car. You make great real trucks like the f150 other than that your entire fleet is junk.

20 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/17/2015

Transmission started to have hard shifting, slipping between 3rd and 4th gear. Jumps very hard when put in reverse. This problem only started three months ago. The car only had 73000 miles on it when it stared to act wrong. It would slip between 3rd and fourth gear when going above 40 mph and do it only one or two times when starting to drive then operate normally until the next cold start. Truck has mostly highway miles and just started driving city routes in the past two years. I see several posted complaints about this model transmission. Maybe NHTSA should recall it before someone has a bad accident due to transmission failure.

21 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/16/2015

1st transmission total failure at 87k miles 2nd transmission total failure at 156k miles vehicle is driven very light duty usage by a mature woman (now 86 years old at the time of the 2nd failure). From researching on the internet I have found that Ford many issues with early mileage transmission failures and never a recall for this issue. I'm filing this on behalf of my mother.

23 Transmission Failure problem of the 2003 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/26/2015

I bought my Ford Explorer XLT back in June of 2015. Since then I replaced my oxygen sensor do to a fault in the system and melting back in Aug. 20015. The SUV wouldn't start because of it and had to be towed. Since I purchased and had replaced the oxygen sensor by a Ford dealer, I noticed the SUV having power failure even from a complete stop and now the over drive off light flashes; this started in the beginning of Nov. 2015 I noticed that there is over 2755 complaints of transmission problems and failures exactly the same as mine, but not one recall. This is a issue with the SUV themselves and not owner error. I have children and don't want to end up stranded in the street or side of the highway due to transmission failure. There has to be something causing the transmission to break down or fail and I refuse to be the the blame nor pay thousands to Ford dealership to fix a flaw in there own SUV. A recall needs to be made for this problem and it is clearly a manufacture flaw.

24 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/17/2015

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. While driving at various speeds, the transmission failed to shift into different gears. The contact mentioned that there was a loud whining sound coming from the transmission. While driving up a hill, the contact was unable to change gears and had to apply the brakes in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 156,000.

25 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/05/2015

Transmission started to have hard shifting, slipping between 3rd and 4th gear. Jumps very hard when put in reverse. It would slip between 3rd and fourth gear when going above 40 mph and do it only one or two times when starting to drive then operate normally until the next cold start. I see several posted complaints about this model transmission. Maybe NHTSA should recall it before someone has a bad accident due to transmission failure.

26 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/22/2015

I was leaving a side street, merging into traffic and as I was changing lanes and accelerating into busy traffic the vehicle just sat there with the engine revving up. The transmission wouldn't engage and then it slammed into gear so hard that it felt like I was rear ended and there was a loud bang. In my opinion, this is a definite risk to our personal safety because if you turn across traffic, change lanes, merge or attempt to avoid obstacles; you have no idea when the transmission will fail making it impossible to safely operate this vehicle. It is a major safety issue - please hold Ford accountable before someone gets killed. Thank you.

27 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/15/2015

Driving on the interstate at 70 mph. Transmission failed while driving in traffic. Was nearly hit trying to get vehicle off the road. No warning, transmission just went. Huge problem and safety issue with Ford Explorer.

28 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/17/2014

Transmission failure before 100000 miles while on freeway.

29 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

When is the NHTSA going to address the chronic issues with the 2002-2005 Ford Explorer automatic transmissions? it is common knowledge ( including by Ford) that these transmissions all fail anywhere from 50,000 miles up to less than 150,000 miles. Towing with this vehicle has nothing to do with the issue. The market is flooded with these broken Explorers and they are the regular customers at the repair shops if people don't junk them and can afford to have them fixed. They are a hazard on the road when the vehicle suddenly fails to move in traffic or from a stop at an intersection. I was nearly rear ended when my vehicle started into a busy intersection and the transmission failed leaving me coasting in traffic. I am sure that many other complaints have been lodged against these vehicles and that serious injury has occurred as a result of the transmission failures. The internet even sells questionable repair fixes for these transmissions.

30 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/17/2014

For the second time, the vehicle's transmission failed, leaving the vehicle completely powerless while driving. The transmission also failed at approximately 70,000 miles in 2006, again while driving the vehicle in traffic. In both cases, I, as the driver, was nearly involved in accidents with other vehicles because of the complete loss of the transmission power train. The vehicle also gave no warning of the failure prior to these events. It is my understanding that this has been a long-standing design defect with Ford Explorers, with a high number of vehicles from the early 2000s suffering similar transmission failures. This is both dangerous and, I believe, a defect that could cause injury and/or death. . I also wish to add that this vehicle, which is 4 wheel drive and includes a factory installed towing package, has only occasionally been used for towing a boat (2x per year) and is seldom used in its 4 wheel drive capacity (only on snow covered roads 2-3 times per year). The vehicle has been well maintained. The cost of the repairs in each case was over $2,000.

31 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/28/2014

Transmission failed. Took it in to be rebuilt and it never shifted right so I took it back again and they replaced an electrical strap; still not shifting right. Took it back again to be looked at. Got it back today and when I left the shop it was ok, later in the day I ran an errand and when I got in to come home I didn't have any gears, nothing and putting it in park was very difficult. Finally got reverse after a few minutes of shifting up and down; put it in park again; after many many attempts I finally got drive but in the 2 position on the shifter. I had noticed that the shifter was really loose when I first got in but thought perhaps it was that way before but I just hadn't noticed. Got home and had to force it in to park and then tried to go in reverse or drive again and had nothing.

32 Transmission Failure problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/12/2014

While parked, I started up my vehicle and put the truck in reverse. However, the truck would not reverse. I was able to drive forward and took my vehicle to mechanic. He stated that the Fords were "well known" for having bad transmission due to certain pieces not fitting, especially the 2002-2006 models. I searched online and realized this problem is a lot bigger than just "a few" cases. This is an epidemic of neglect! additional issues include the throttle body for which your establishment has already investigated but limited the "recall" for years 2009-2013. This should be extended further to cover all incidents within a certain mileage. Mine started around fifty thousand miles until I had it replaced for $650! I request an investigation on the transmission failures, specifically with the inability to reverse.

33 Transmission Failure problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/10/2014

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving 10 mph, the transmission failed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

34 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/08/2014

Third transmission failure since 2010. Bought a Ford remanufactured trans as this is my second 2002 with a failed trans. The first one I bought failed seven months later. Replaced under warranty at 17,000 miles later. Fast forward to last Saturday. Same failure as the last two. No help from Ford, probably surprised I made it through the warranty.

35 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/25/2013

Transmission seals fell off in the driveway, transmission completely failed.
