This 5r55w transmission had to be replaced at 108,890 miles for $3500 while my daughter lived at college. I purchased a 3-year 36,000 mile Ford warranty as I was confounded that a truck transmission might fail at such an early age. 3-years 16-days 35,652 miles later this Ford reman Ford installed trans also failed and Ford is unwilling to accept any responsibility for cost of repair replace, 16-days beyond a 100% free replacement. The local dealer quoted $4500 and the previous dealer (100 miles away) quoted the same $3500. I opted for aamco at $2500 and 3-year 36,000 mile warranty, since Ford can't re-engineer their own transmission to last a reasonable amount of time, there are hundreds of complaints just on the 2002 Explorer transmission, and there are thousands for 5r55w transmission. It is unconscionable that Ford is unwilling to accept any liability.

Transmission failed on the highway at 70mph pulled off exit and continued on city roads to our jobs parking lot and is no longer drive able.
Complete transmission failure at 99k miles and cost to completely rebuild is $2400. Car has been maintained according to Ford recommendations. Transmission repair indicated this is a common issue with these transmissions used in Ford Explorers during these years. Ford should perform a recall as this could cause accidents given the lack of warning before failure occurs.

Transmission failure - driving home and the transmission failed. No drive, no reverse, does not go. I purchased this vehicle brand new and have had all of the recommended services performed by my local authorized Ford dealer. After it failed, I searched the web for complaints, I should have done this before buying it. Not very happy about the fact that Ford is not doing anything for this very common failure!! I will warn all potential buyers of any Ford products.
Transmission failure left me stranded in oncoming traffic with kids in the car. Won't stay in reverse and slips severely in low gear forward. Repair shop told me the fix was new transmission for $3000 or rebuild current transmission for $2000. I was told the bands were worn which has been a problem for Explorers for many years. I take good care of vehicle and do not drive it hard. Only four years old and fewer than 90,000 miles points to a design/manufacturing flaw.

Transmission failures, radiator replacement every 30000 miles and bad wheel bearing causing tires to come off during driving. Lucky for me only two encountered so far. Transmission failure. Getting on interstate and stalling in traffic is a danger to my family and other members of the motoring public. Average cost for transmission repairs are 2500. 00 to 4000. 00. Was driving home from getting groceries and the car failed to accelerate. Was at a intersection so it was a unpleasant situation as their was oncoming cars. Pulled the car over and shut off. . Checked for transmission fluid. . There was none. Started car and it would only drive about 15 mph the remainder of the trip. The overdrive control on the transmission had failed. 2200 repair. . Checked the recalls and there currently is not one even though this specific transmission has thousands of complains (not over exaggerating) this is a dangerous situations considering I could have been on the interstate or a on ramp. This vehicle is sitting in my garage awaiting a recall of when my family gets the financial stability to repair it in a non Ford dealership/repair shop. This SUV gets regular fluid fills/changes at the correct intervals with documentation. . This transmission is "sealed" which means it cannot be checked for fluid loss or bad fluid. "bad engineering" which should require a repair at Fords expense.

I was driving my 2002 Ford Explorer SUV when the transmission suddenly failed, shifting into nuetral/losing power in traffic. This was a dangerous situation! fortunately I was able to get out of the way of traffic.
Transmission failure!!! !the o/d warning began to flash. . . The recommendation is to service transmission ASAP. The only issue is that my 2004 Ford Explorer only has 61,672 miles. The estimated repair cost is approximately $2000-3000.
2005 Ford Explorer transmission failing with mileage of 65k miles! was told by Ford it would cost approximately $3500 plus tax to fix. Called fmc and was told I had to work it out with the service dept at the dealership. No acknowledgment of other complaints by fmc main office or dealership; dismissed notion of any validity to complaints showing up online; was told that they would simply make note of it in their system and that was it! so far nothing serious has happened, but apparently others have not been so lucky. Had a few close calls on the highway when trying to drive home from a funeral out of town.
2003 Ford Explorer 5r55-w transmission failure wherein the internal linkages, servo valve and bearings failed at startup, rendering the vehicle unmovable under it's own power and stranding the driver.
While driving down a 4-lane highway, transmission failed. No warning, just thump and done. My research reveals that dealership are reporting that 1 in 10 2004 Explorers have transmission failure. Also, heater blower motor went out over 1 year ago, leaving no default heat for defrosting the windshield.
Bought the car used with about 85,000 miles on it. After one year of average use (no towing or off-roading) the transmission failed (about 97,000 miles). Had it rebuilt and now 2 years and four months later it is failing again (at 122,000 miles).
Transmission is failing in my 2002 Ford Explorer 4x4. A local transmission shop confirmed that my fear that the gears were not shifting properly was due to the transmission failing. It will cost $2400 to $2800 to repair. Because the transmission is sealed it will cost extra. Only through the first half of the year of 2002 were the Explorers made with this transmission and mine was manufactured in may 2001.
I sent a letter of complaint to Ford regarding my situation with my transmission failing on me and the local Ford dealer charging me $4,300 since my car is no longer under warranty. It has been an ongoing issue for years about the transmission failure in the 2002 Ford Explorer yet Ford doesn't wish to address this issue by calling the vehicle back. I have my transmission now gone after only 150000 miles. This issue needs to be addressed by Ford taking responsibility for a faulty transmission.
Transmission failure with no warning, engine reved instead of accelerating, resulting in near accident while pulling off an interstate ramp. Had to have vehicle towed. Estimate to repair is approx $4000. Vehicle only has 112k miles on it!.
Defective transmission in a 2002 Ford Explorer eddie bauer after only 117k miles. Transmission fails shifting between 2nd and 3rd gears. Some times gets stock in parking. Complete failure estimated repair cost $3600 to $4000.
This is in regards to transmission problems with Ford Explorers especially from the year 2000 to 2005. There have been few thousand complaints that I have seen on the internet and heard and also experience myself about the transmission an these vehicles and its ridiculous. The transmission bangs into gears like something is falling underneath bogs down when changing gears. Hesitates when changing gears and just plain transmission failure in which its happening before the vehicle even gets to 60k. I know hundreds of people that have had their transmission replaced at least twice before 100k so consumers please make note of these transmission problems on here because this is a real safety problem for you and your children. Thanks.
