The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. The contact was driving approximately 45 mph when the overdrive warning indicator illuminated until the engine was turned off. The transmission also exhibited severe hesitation. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection where the technician detected that the failure was related to the transmission. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 114,071.
The transmission on my 2004 Ford Explorer has started slipping. It does not want to go into gear correctly. It only has 107,600 miles on it. I live just outside birmingham, al and the traffic is very heavy and dangerous here. Not a place I want my vehicle breaking down. I just hung up the phone with Ford motor CO and they have nothing to offer in the way of help. They said to hold on to receipts in case of recall. :-( you bet your life I will! my sister's 2005 did the same thing at just over 100,000 miles.

Bought and own a 2006 Ford Explorer, eddie bauer purchased as used in 2008 with 19,000 miles on it. At 60,000 the transmission lurches, and slips. . . . Feels like someone is rear ending you. Slow to respond when accelerating, makes clunking sound when putting into park or reverse. Researched on the internet and there are thousands of complaints regarding the 2006 Ford exlporer transmissions and aparently Ford has issued no recall and offers no repair solution (unless you shell out $2500 for a new transmission). It is unbelieveble that a SUV with 60,000 miles needs a new transmission!! I still owe just under $10,000 for this truck, where is the justice in buying american??
I would appreciate your comment to this on-going Ford problem. Please Ford. . . . . . Do something!!
thank you!.

My transmission on my 2002 Ford Explorer XLT wont shift into 3rd gear.
The transmission on our 2003 Ford Explorer had to be replaced. It could have left us stranded on the road. Ford knew of this problem with the transmissions on the 2003-2004 Explorers. I think they should make an adjustment on the cost of the repairs. Transmission are supposed to last longer than 71,000 miles. We did not mistreat this vehicle in any way.
My wife was driving down the street and without warning the car stopped accelerating when she tried driving. She was able to coast across 2 lanes with hazards on and park the car. A local shop says the transmission is french and is known to have issues of failure. Total repair will be $2900 with an american made transmission with a 100k mile warranty.

Transmission went out.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Explorer. The contact was driving approximately 45 mph when the engine exhibited an abnormal increase in rpms. The vehicle then accelerated abnormally and the contact was involved in a crash that involved four additional vehicles. No injuries were reported and a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the servo plug had popped out of place and fractured the side of the transmission. The dealer advised that the transmission would need replacing. The manufacturer was contacted who did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 118,000. The VIN was unavailable.

Transmission slams hard into gear upon acceleration and when braking. Does this all the time. When shifting into reverse, it does not engage immediately and then engages hard with a sudden and unexpected lurch backwards. This happens 8 of 10 times when shifting to reverse. No attempt to correct as it appears there is no fix short of a new transmission = $$$ I don't have.
The contact owns a 2007 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the vehicle was not accurately shifting gears and the vehicle would accelerate backwards while in drive. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they performed a diagnostic test which concluded that they needed to reprogram the trans memory to update calibration for converter lockup. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified. The current and failure mileages were 29,000.
I was driving my 2003 Ford Explorer XLT v6 4. 0l on i40w, when all of a sudden the vehicle began to decelerate while the rpms were constantly going up. This put me in the interstate with no power as the gears weren't shifting. I took it to my local Ford dealership and they put it on the diagnostic machine and told me they really didn't know what was wrong with it and that they would have to break the transmission down in order to know for sure. I searched online for any common transmission problems and came across a site where people with vehicles just like mine having the same exact problem. As of now I'm still waiting on Ford to let me know what's going on with my truck, but with hundreds of other people having the same problem I see no reason for them not know what the problem is as well as have a recall on the vehicle to fix the problem.
My Ford Explorer "o/d off" light flashes and it has problems shifting into 2nd and 5th gear. From what I understand my transmission could go out at any minute, costing thousands to repair. If I am driving on a crowded highway or merging this could be dangerous. I have read countless complaints on other websites. This is a common problem and Ford needs to recall these transmissions before someone gets killed.

Repeated failure of 2005 Ford Explorer transmission model 5r55s. 3 total failures requiring complete overhaul in 3 years. Repairs performed by same qualified independent and Ford dealer recommended repair alternative facility. Ford wouldn't provide a warranty at 90,000 mile first failure. Most recent repair 2/24/2011 and 3rd costing $2500. Mileage between 2nd and 3rd repairs-38,000 miles. Present mileage 130,000 on vehicle. Chassis mileage is high but 3 failures in 3 years on low mileage transmission between overhauls is not normal.

I am another victim of the 2002 Ford Explorer and its transmission woes. Alerted by a flashing od yellow warning light, after a trip to the garage and research on the internet, I discover this is a sign that I will need a $3000 transmission rebuild on a vehicle with only 99k miles that was carefully used and dealer serviced. This is a known problem by Ford and have done nothing to rectify if with consumers.
The od light is flashing and the trans is slipping. You can not excelerate in a hurry because it wont go making this truck a accident waiting to happen.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Explorer. The contact stated when shifting the gear selector there was a delayed response and the vehicle would lunge forward. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact planned to notify the manufacturer regarding the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
At 105k miles, our 2002 Ford Explorer started shaking as it shifted through the gears. We took it to a Ford dealer who charged $2,000 for "fixing" the problem. Driving away from the dealer, the problem continued. We took it back to the dealer who said there was another error code that cost us $30. The problem continued, and today Ford said that the transmission needed to be completely replaced. At just over 100k miles, there is no reason that the transmission should completely go out. We are now left with a vehicle that we can't sell and can't drive. Looking at several other descriptions on this website, it is apparent that Ford continues to ignore this transmission issue.
Service engine light appeared, then the od (overdrive) light began flashing. Then the Explorer had difficulty accelerating. The engine was running higher rpms than usual, especially when accelerating from 0 to 30mph. I took the Explorer to the Ford dealer where the Explorer was purchased and exclusively serviced since when I bought it new in July 2003. They would not acknowledge that this is a persistent problem with 2003 Explorers. They told me that I have no 2nd or 5th gears, int. Servo failed and case bore damaged. They want over $3,600 to repair (and that, they say is a discount!). I then took it to a transmission shop, who was well aware of this problem and there were 2 other Explorers currently there being repaired for the same thing. An investigation needs to be done for a recall. This is a safety issue and a consumer rip-off!.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the gear shift selector detached from the hinge while the contact was attempting to change gears. The contact was able to shut off the vehicle but the key would not come out of the ignition. The vehicle was repaired once but the failure recurred. The dealer was contacted and told the contact that there were no recalls for the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 74,797 and the current mileage is 75,846. Updated 07/27/lj.
Transmission went out on my 2004 Ford Explorer only a day after I bought it from a dealership. The replacement transmission will cost me $3400 plus the $10550 that I paid for the vehicle the day before. What a big mess this is.
My 2003 Ford Explorer XLT only has 70000k and the transmission is completely in need of rebuild. It doesnt drive in reverse and doesnt go faster than 25mph without sounding as if the engine is going to fall off. It kicks back while attempting to change gears and the rpm is working hard with the truck going nowhere fast. I cant afford to repair the problem as im still making monthly payments on it. This should not be happening with an eight year old vehicle. This little bit of information on how there is no dipstick to check the transmission fluid should have been revealed at time of purchase I think.
"od (overdrive)" light blinking in dash. Then "service engine soon" light on on 12-31-10. Higher rpm's in engine then usual, to shift gears in automatic tranmission. Trans having thumping sounding when placed into park, drive or reverse. Broken servo sidearm inside transmission. . Vehicle only has 62,000 miles on it. Taken to local tranmission shop. Estimate of $1,475 to fix.
The transmission on our 2002 Ford Explorer needed to be rebuilt at 36,000 miles and is now needing to be rebuilt again at 74,000 miles. The first repair was done at a Ford dealership and after much complaining we were able to have some of the cost absorbed by purchasing an extended warranty. The car started shifting rough again a few weeks ago and then quickly progressed to fully skipping 3rd gear. We are now facing rebuilding it again. We have read up on the problem and have discovered that it is very common for the earlier built 2002 Ford Explorers. . Read more...
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph the overdrive and service warning lights illuminated as the vehicle began to lose power. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where the transmission converter body was rebuilt. In addition, repairs were made to the overdrive piston, overdrive speed sensor, overdrive band, carrier planter, and reverse board bushing. The mechanic also replaced the transmission fluid. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that there were no recalls for the failure and would not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was 61,411 and the current mileage was 61,445. Updated 2/28/11 updated 06/03/jb.
Ford Explorer transmission lunges, jerks, will only drive in 3rd gear, no warning, wrench light came on, now check engine light is on. Over $2500 they say to repair it. Hundreds of people having the same problem. Ford should investigate.
I have owned my 1999 Ford Explorer for about 1 year. About 2 months ago I noticed a delay with the transm ission engaging when shifting into drive or reverse. Then about a month ago it started having trouble shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear and very soon after that my over drive light comes on intermittenly and blinks which makes the vehicle sluggish like I am toeing something. Upon researching this problem I have found that I am only one of thousands or more that have this same issue between the years of 1995 - 2004. Also finding out that this is anywhere from a $2000 - $5000 fix. From my research and I don't seem to be alone. This should be a Ford recall.
The contact owns a 2006 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that he was unable to shift out of park. The contact had to take apart the steering column. The failure occurred whenever the vehicle was operated. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where it was repaired. The failure continued so the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the contact was informed that the gear shift needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000 and the current mileage was approximately 42,000. Updated 03/31/lj.
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph when the rpms increased up to 405 and the over drive light illuminated as well. The contact drove onto the emergency lane and was able to restart the vehicle it recurred. The dealer was informed about the failure and they stated that the bands in the transmission are shot and will have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 62000 and the current mileage was 62010.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving 15 mph the vehicle stalled and would not shift into third gear. The contact noticed a recall for the power train transmission. Due to the VIN the vehicle was not a part of the recall. The contact stated that the manufacturer should extend the recall to more vehicle identification numbers since this was a known safety issue. The failure mileage was 190,000.
Transmission problems. This is the second time this has happened and the transmission was rebuilt in 2005. We've only averaged about 10,000 miles per year since the rebuild.
2006 Ford Explorer eddie bauer addition blue w/beige trim. Without warning wrench light then transmission light came on. Cars rpms were stuck at 3. . 3. 5 yet car was not accelerating. After driving 18. 7 miles other than feeling & hearing cluck as car shifted gears. Has appended several times (4). In heavy traffic slow acceleration can lead be rear end collision, I have been lucky so far. Rapid and hard cluck when moving from park causes vehicle to lurch which is potentially dangerous in tight parking spaces such has garage. The dealer has worked on the car twice for a total of 8 days. I will be taking back again Nov 19th 2010.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Explorer. The contact observed a long hair line fracture along the panel below the rear windshield. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they informed the contact that the rear windshield panel would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 44,000. The consumer also stated he had difficulty shifting the gear into reverse. Updated 01/06/11 updated 01/24/11 updated 02/03/11.
Trouble removing vehicle from park on incline over few week period. Transmission changing gears in rough manner over a few day period. Od light flashing during highway driving and then odor of something burning on October 10, 2010. Diagnosed as "fried transmission" by dealer. Cost to replace $3887 plus $125 for diagnosis. Not yet repaired - deciding our next action. Vehicle purchased new, always maintained according to dealer recommendations. Vehicle never abused, only towed very light utility and snowmobile trailers.
