1 Axle Shaft problem of the 2003 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/13/2007

- while driving the 2003 Ford Explorer at 60 mph the contact heard a noise and the back of the SUV began to vibrate. Once the vehicle was checked the contact noticed that the tire was at an angle. The contact thought the dealer forgot to put the lugs:nuts back on the wheel. The drivers side rear axle shaft failed ,almost causinga crash after the dealer had worked on it. Only one nut was holding the shaft in place. The contact believed that this was also a manufacturing defect. The weather was overcast and 20 degrees. It snowed, but the road was dry. The vehicle had to be towed the next day to the dealership to be repaired. The current and failure mileage were 60000.

Failure Date: 09/10/2005

2005 Ford Explorer XLT-3 weeks old now have had to: replace rear axle-howling noise-still noise in rear and have to take back tomorrow. Have heard of several problems w/ rear axles being reported. Would not buy this vehicle again. 3 weeks old and we are disappointed with this purchase. Shocked that they sold this vehicle knowing these kinds of issues w/ 2005 Explorers is predominate. They are all under warranty so no recalls. 3 in shop when we were there. Been without our new vehicle 4 days thus far. No rental provided.

5 Axle Shaft problem of the 2003 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/04/2004

Whining noise coming from rear became louder 41,000 mile on odo dealer advised rear wheel bearings seals and strut inserts, we had the repairs made $1000. 00 one year later we noticed more noise and chatter when turning, dealer advised rear differential needs rebuild, and new clutch packs. We are having the repairs made at this time. These are expensive problems Ford should be held responsible.

6 Axle Shaft problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/16/2003

Front end of my 2002 Explorer made a "clicking" sound when driving and turning. On June 16 2003, Ford inspected and found both the right and left front axles were defective. They replaced them. On September 4, 2003 the same problem was occurring, Ford again inspected and found the axles put on the vehicle in June were also defective. One year later I am now having the same problem. I took my vehicle in for an oil change and the mechanic said there is a problem with the front axles. There has to be some sort of issue with this part. The potential failure of this part will lead to an accident. My family rides in this vehicle every day, someone is going to get killed.

7 Axle Shaft problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/24/2003

The initial problem with the rear-end differential unit was a whining noise which the Ford dealer's service rep. Identified and immediately said it should be replaced. The new rear-end unit did not whine but within 3 1/2 months a vibration started and was returned to the dealer for a total of 6 different occasions to repair or fix this problem. Both the left and right rear axles were also replaced and another rear end differential unit was installed. At each service visit, the dealer's service manager and mechanic were completely involved and were very perplexed at the problem. My Explorer was at the dealer for about 30 days on one service visit and a total of 42 days over the 6 total service visits for this problem. Persistent fluid leaks and a recurring vibration has prompted me to submit a "lemon" letter to Ford.

8 Axle Shaft problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/01/2003

Vehicle purchased new, had a pinion noice in rear differential since purchased. Dealer changed rear differential and a week later it developed a leak due to blown axle seal. Rear differential then developed a noise when accelerating into a turn from a stoped position. Dealer added an additive to rear for limited slip unit. Noise is still there on turns but is very light. All this has occured since purchased new and 14,000 miles.

10 Axle Shaft problem of the 1996 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/17/2000

Beerings were shot, truck was not used off road at all, feel that it is a manufacturers defect. The part alone was $ 285. 00 . I am aware that I am reporting thisvery late, but the real reason is that I am upset that the gear shift indicator is not working I. E. The little arrow in the dashboard that tells you what gear you are in. They want $ 150. 00 to replace that piece. I feel that the indicator should last the life of the vehicle. I plan on writing Ford about both of these problems and hope to have them pay for the gear shift indicator repair. Thank you.
