I own a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. It has 99,000 miles on it. I drove this vehicle very gently and haven't had any prior problems. Then one day out of nowhere, the transmission went. It went without warning. No prior slippage, no jerking, no engine lights, nothing. Now I have to dish out money I don't have to get it fixed. I see I'm not the only person with this problem. Ford needs to recognize the fact that they messed up somewhere along the way with this vehicle. It has a nice body, a nice look and feel. The transmission problem just needs to be taken care of. I'm waiting for a recall so I can get my money back. I've been a faithful Ford driver, and they should be there for everyone who supports them by buying their vehicles. If I don't get any resolution, I'll be sure to never even look at a Ford again. I'll tell everyone I know to stay clear of Ford.
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Explorer. While driving 10 mph, the vehicle shifted into four wheel drive without warning. The contact pressed the reset button on the dashboard, which deactivated the four wheel drive feature. She also stated that the door open light remained illuminated. The dealer has not inspected the vehicle. The current and failure mileages were 63,000.

We have a 2002 Ford Explorer. We bought it new. Our transmission is currently going out on the vehicle. It is at 110,000 miles. Had it to dealership after first bought it and dealership reprogrammed the computer and then at about 38000 miles it started doing it again. Have now been told it is the transmission. We also have a humming coming from our right rear tire and front. Now told it is the wheel bearings. Have several friends with the same problems on their 2002 Explorers.

I bought a 2003 Explorer new from the dealer and ever since I had this vehicle it has clunked into gear from park to drive, from reverse to drive, and sometimes when I am parked and put it in reverse to pull out of the spot it lunges back for no reason. I am afraid to even parallel park not knowing if it will go and lunge back and hit the car behind me. I have had it to the dealer approx. 9 times for the trans and they cant seem to fix it. They keep pulling at strings and changing parts and trying to fix the problem but it has not been fixed yet. This was 1 year ago and I am still having the same problem, the vehicle has been having more problems as the year went on and I continue to take it back to the dealer but they still cant seem to fix it. It started 10/2003 and this is 1/2005 and still not fixed. . .
While driving it was hard for the consumer to shift gears manually. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
I currently own a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT, 4x4, 5-speed manual
transmission. One thing I have noticed with this vehicle is when I am either stopping moderately hard/fast or making sharp right turns, the engine tends to stall. This only happens when the transmission is in neutral
or I have the clutch in. The main reason this is a problem is because
when the vehicle is stalled, the power steering is off. Most of my
problems have been on off ramps where I'm traveling realitively fast
and a right turn. Towards the end of the ramp I start to straigten
out the wheel and realize I can't move it. Generally I am forced to
slam on the breaks before running into something or if I have enough
time, I will quickly attempt to start it. There was no specific incident date. This did not start to happen
until after my 30-day warranty was up at from the dealer so I have not
had anything done to attempt to fix it. I have found on the internet
that several Explorers have had this problem. Some people blamed it
on a valve. Below are listed websites where people have submitted to
forums. These are people in similar situations as myself. . Read more...

Have Ford exeplorer 1998 transmission has been acting up for a year and a half. Jerking when you put it in reverse and clunking when you put it in to drive. My exeplorer just turned 60. 000 miles and the transmission is no longer working,I can not believe the problems I have had with this car, from having a wreck and airbag not deploying to all of the recalls, had the bad tires and windsheild wipers not working. They should really have to do something about the exeplorer from that year. Ibought my exeplorer in oct,98 of that year new. When my exeplorer was hit head on ,the police asked if I turned off my airbags. The car had to be towed.

Power seat. Rocked back and forth and got worse. Dealer replaced. Seat started to get loose again and dealer replaced it again. Also seat belt was not retracting back in. Dealer replaced. Additional defect not noted was the 5 speed manual transmission having to be rebuilt at 22,868 miles. Would be glad to fill out additional form or provide service records etc. If needed. Thanks for your time. Keith.
Consumer had taken vehicle to dealer regarding transmission problems on seven occasions, when shifted into reverse, vehicle will hesitate and then pop into reverse after 15-20 seconds, vehicle will not always go in reverse, dealer stated that transmission was going, but not to do anything until all gears were affected.
Front end is misaligned and the mud was found in the transmission.
Engine began to race whether the car was waiting for a light or traveling making it necessary to depress the brake pedal forcefully to keep the vehicle from surging ahead, while waiting at a light the consumer had to turn the vehicle off because it was racing so forcefully the vehicle may have hit crossing pedestrians, the overdrive indicator was illuminated and the vehicle began shifting erratically, the transmission was replaced and the vehicle is racing again, possibly related to the linkages.
