38 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/01/2005

2002 Ford Explorer had transmission problems from the beginning. Took the vehicle in prior to the 36k warranty expiring and was told that the trouble was due to a new type of transmission that was used in this model. Was told it was a "memory transmission" and that was why it shifted so hard and made noises. Problem never went away and had to get the transmission rebuilt in 12/05 because the problem became so severe. From research we have done this is not a random case but rather a recurring problem for owners of this vehicle. Ford should be responsible for the fixing the transmissions because they know that they are not reliable.

Vehicle started to hesitate when shifting, whining noise from rear end as well. Over drive light on, then finally vehicle stopped engaging gears. 2002 Explorer has been sitting in driveway for one year due to transmission failure. Ford not willing to fix the problem. Vehicle has 58000 miles. Prior to this incident rear hatch window blew out two times with the second time glass blew off so violently it damaged paint on new vehicle (dealer and Ford manufacturer refused to pay for repair and instructed me to file insurance claim) damage to other car was clearly due to defect in window hatch mechanism and they should pay. 43 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/01/2004

The past several months I have had numerous transmission problems. My Explorer does not shift correctly. It hesitates when shifting which is really dangerous in traffic. Also when I try to reverse it hesitates and then abruptly accerelates into reverse very hard and fast. It makes a loud noise when it happens also. It does this everytime I go into reverse. Also my vehicle has lost all power in the middle of driving on the interstate. I have lost power on many occasions. It is very dangerous especially when I have to young children sitting in the back.

47 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/14/2004

Purchased a new 2004 Ford Explorer automatic v6 in Nov 04. Occasionally when shifting in reverse, engine would give a "hard" jerk. When driving the vehicle, stopped(especially) if roads were wet, when attempting to proceed forward, vehicle tires-good tires/even wear, rotated regularly and/or vehicle would loose control as engine attempted to move forward. Always a very annoying noise in rear riding as passenger. But it to dealer @ beginning, checked it out under warranty, noe vehicle has a little over"75930". Drove it from one state to another, parked it, next day drove it < than a 1/4 mile to store, shopped, returning home the "transmission" gave a very loud noise, grinding and a hard jerk, enough to hurt one driving or passenger's backs. 2nd gear unable to engage, rpm race to 4000 2nd gone! Ford dealer quotes a repair(rebuilt) @ $3555. 0+taxes @ rate of "$100. 00" an hour = labor nearly a "$1000. 00. Brought it to a repriable trans shop quoted $3000. 00 complete we have been a"die-hard" owners of Fords for years, even own a 1956crown vic. , 86 f250, 99 lincolncon't, 00mustang, and this )$ Ford Explorer is the worse vehicle puchased @ "$38,000". Never mind all the previous ones, never have I ever dealt with a fairly new vehicle of poor workmanship/design. Reports reveal that these 04's definitely have Ford manufactutrer defects or craftmanship faults. Why do people give up on "american" vehicles, ah ah? @ "75,930+ miles a broken transmission.

49 Noises During Shifting problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/02/2000

In the 19 months that I have had my Ford explore, it has had 3 recalls. About 4 mos ago I noticed a loud noise that seem to be coming from up underneat the car. You could hear it when at a stopped position but still in drive. I had the dealership check for it twice and they said they couldn't find anything. About 6 weeks ago I noticed a slight hestitation when on the highway when accelerating and it seemed to do it more over the last 2 weeks. July 2nd, my family was traveling home from new york and a noise began that could have been mistaken for something dragging underneath the car. We lost all acceleration, coasted off an exit, and the gears were useless and grinded when we tried to shift to park. The emergency brake was the only thing holding us there. I am still waiting for results from the dealership on the problem, but its definetely transmission related. I now fear for the safety of me and my 2 children in that vehicle. It seems like an accident waiting to happen. Thank you for your time.

50 Noises During Shifting problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/28/1999

We (herndon, va residents - jane, my son tj-15, my daughter bobbie-13, and I) were returning from spending christmas with jane's sister, anne, and our brother-in-law, jack, in detroit. We departed from farmington hills mi (detroit) at 9:30am in a light snow. It worsened as we got into ohio, but the roads were cleared and in some areas were salted. Most traffic was moving at approximately 50 mph in one lane, the far right one closest to the shoulder. That is where I was when the accident occurred. Shortly after we started the trip I heard a series of loud noises from under the car. My sport utility vehicle (SUV), a 1997 Ford Explorer, has a series of settings for 4 wheel drive (4wd), I. E. , auto 4wd, 4wd high, and 4wd low. At the time I believed the noise to be the car shifting from 2wd to 4wd as it sensed the road conditions. I attempted to set it to 4wd, but the noise continued. Since the noise did not stop I set it back to the setting I had it in most of the time. At approximately 1pm, I am certain the transmission failed locking the wheels, which put me into a spin. During the spin the car rolled over, went in and out of a ditch (located to the right of the shoulder of the road) on its side, and eventually settled right side up with the front of the car pointed downward into the ditch toward the highway. I contacted my insurance company and the car is currently located at suburban collision center, 1151 west bagley road, burea, OH 44017 (440) 243-5533.
