Ford Explorer owners have reported 340 problems related to overdrive light on (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Explorer based on all problems reported for the Explorer.
The vehicle began to shift oddly from second to third. The overdrive off light began blinking. Shifting then began to be rough. I promptly took it to my mechanic who found it necessary to replace the transmission with a rebuilt unit. Second gear casing had failed.

The transmission on my 2002 Ford Explorer XLT suddenly began to rev higher than normal. The overdrive light indicator on the dash began to flash and 2nd and 5th gear seemed to have stopped working.
I called Ford customer relations to report my transmission was failing, and discovering that many people were reporting the same issue on the web: flashing overdrive light, constant engine service light, and my transmission was sticking and not shifting properly. I told the representative about my issue and immediatedly they said I did not have the extended warrenty. I told them I did have the extended which was up to 100000 miles, but I was barely over by 3000 miles. I explained that a lot of other people were complaining about the same transmission issue with the same make, model, and year. The agent sounded like he was reading from a script, including his supervisor saying I was out of warranty, sorry, and go to the dealer you bought the car from. When it was clear he was not going to do anything, I asked to speak with a supervisor, but it was clear that she was not going to do anything either. All I was asking for was a goodwill repair discount, and they refused. I grew up with Fords; fairlane, falcon, galaxy, maverick, ltd, taurus, expedition, t-bird, and Explorer. I am not going to say I will never drive another Ford, but I no longer feel loyal to the brand. Honda's and Toyota's transmissions last longer and they stand by their product. I am very disappointed about thier lack of customer service and indifference with my problem. This is going to cost $2500 for a rebuild or $3500 for a new transmission.

Transmission failure. Transmission does not want to up shift, it will shift hard. O/d light flashing.
I am a single mother of 4 driving 55mph in heavy traffic on a 4 lane highway, with my children in the vehicle when the o/d light flashed a few times and then the transmission just stopped working, as though the vehicle was in neutral I coasted safely to a stop thank god. I took it to a Ford service center and they said it was caused by the servo boar????? never herd of this. It used to be a seperate line that could be replaced now it is built into the transmission and the whole transmission has to be replaced. Is what I was told to me by the certified Ford service man and that there was not a problem with the old style lines but he hears of this often with the newer transmissions. Was this changed just for profit by Ford motor company? because with this happening without warning someone could get into an accident and be seriously injured or killed depending on the situation. I am very upset that my family was put in this situation but we got lucky. If we were only lucky enough to have the money to fix it now, it is $2,400 for the new transmission and labor.
O/d off light flashing and service engine light on constant. Transmission has a hard time shifting from first to second gear. It had approximately 140,000 miles when it first happened. I am not the original owner so I am unsure if this has happened before.
The o/d light keeps flashing on and off. Also the transmission does no longer want to shift gears; and when it does it shifts very hard.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the overdrive warning light illuminated as the vehicle began to loose power. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred three times. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 114,000.
Transmission failure. . . . O/d light flashes and service engine light stays on.
O/d light spontaneously came on. Can not be turned off. Transmition takes off slow. First gear slams into second, with slow takeoff causes cars behind me to stop short because my takeoff is very slow.
Transmission shifts hard o/d light flashes.

Driving 2002 Ford Explorer when o/d light flashed and warning came on to check transmission. Will need a new transmission.
I have a 2003 Ford Explorer and my o/d light keeps flashing I took it to the dealer to get it checked and they said I need a new transmission because I have no 2nd or 5th gear they also said this is a common problem with that year. They said the shift sealnoid went out so now I cant drive my truck tell I can afford 3400 dollars to get it fixed so that has made it harder for me to get to work and to get my family where they need to be.
Was driving down the highway at 55 mph at my overdrive light started flashing and my information screen showed "check transmission" when I got home, I looked up the problem on the internet and found that my transmission just went bad and will need to be replaced according to what hundreds of complaints say had to be done to fix the same problem.
Like every other day, I started the SUV a few minutes before I had to leave to let it warm up because NY is cold, and then left to run some errands. I realized right away that the truck sounded a little funny when accelerating, so the radio went off so I could listen. I found that when shifting from first to second, in this automatic vehicle, the overdrive was kicking on prematurely. Then the o/d light started flashing. I came home and started researching it and found hundreds of complaints, so here I am, in the same boat as everyone else, about to look up numbers to transmission specialists because the dealer is definitely not going to make any money off of my with this one.
In 2005, my 2004 Ford Explorer was part of a recall for the transmission. I took it to Ford service and they put some type of additive. They told me the problem was fixed. From 2005 to 2011 the transmission would have problems, it would turn off when I put it in reverse. Furthermore, when I put the car in reverse it would pause then shift back hard. Unfortunately, I never took the car back to Ford to get it checked because the car would always turn right back on. In January of 2011 my car had 72,000 miles. While I was driving the car suddenly turned off on me. Immediately, the service engine soon light came on. Also, the o/d off light began flashing. When I would restart the vehicle it would turn on. However, when I shifted into drive it would turn off. So I was unable to drive the vehicle. I took the car to Ford service and they explained to me that I need a new (remanufactured) transmission at a cost of $4,000. My car is currently in the service department waiting to be fixed.
I recently encountered problems with my vehicle's acceleration. The vehicle then began to buck, make loud noises, the check engine light came on and then the o/d light began to flash. I took my vehicle to the dealer to have a diagnostics test performed which determined that my transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle that I am referencing is a 2003 Ford Explorer with 73,859 miles (at the time of the diagnosis). I did reseach which revealed that this has been a common issue with 2003 Ford Explorers with approximately the same number of miles. I did get the transmission replaced in my vehicle, however the complaint is that these vehicles are requiring transmission replacements at such low miles. With all of the complaints involving this issue, it seems to warrant an investigation into the matter. . . . . . . . Please investigate.
I was driving my Explorer yesterday and it was attempting to shift gears and instead sounded like an explosion or a tire getting busted. The o/d light came on and start flashing. It would reset itself everytime the car was restarted but immediately came back on. Later in the evening, the service engine soon light came on. I'm not one to wait and let something terrible happen to my vehicles so I took it to aamco after Ford told us they were too busy to run diagnostics on it. Aamco explained that it was either the transmission or the selenoid pack. Upon opening the pan underneath, they explained that if there were metal chunks it would be the transmission; if not, the selenoid pack. Sure enough, there were big metal chunks. Now, after having the car only two months, I'm having to come up with money to replace the transmission in a car that appeared to be in stellar condition. Upon doing some research today, apparently this is a common and well known issue in the Ford Explorer. Ford needs to step up their quality of equipment used in their vehicles. It is scary to know I could have been in traffic or somewhere else and the car die and leave me stranded or hurt.
I own a 2003 Ford Explorer and have never had any problem with my vehicle. I do not drive it hard and make sure that it gets the proper upkeep. As I was driving down the road one day my check engine lihgt came on. The next day on my way to work I noticed that the transmisson was having trouble shifting and the time I got home that evening the transmission was shifting very hard if it would even shift at all. My o/d off light also started flashing. I thought that it was just a fluke with my transmission until I checked online to find that there is alot of other people having the same problem and that Ford is doing nothing to fix the problem. My car is currently in the shop and they have said that it will cost atleast 3200 or more to fix the transmission. I have contacted my Ford dealership and they were well aware of the problems with this transmission but stated there was nothing they could do and Ford hasn't accepted responsibility for the problem. They also stated that there was an obvious defect with the transmission. I would like to know if there is or was a defect investigation seeing that there are so many people with the same problem and if anyone can tell me if there is a class action lawsuit for this mattter.
My 2002 Ford Explorer o/d light is blinking, as many other Ford Explorer owners I am afraid this is a seriuos transmission problem, I want Ford to be liabable to adress this problem of such a big magnitud.
My wife owns a 2004 Ford Explorer XLT with what I've found to be a common problem. The overdrive light flashes on the dash board. It usually is a transmission problem that is a very expensive repair. This issue with the Explorer has been going on for over a decade. I think that Ford should be held accountable. After all Ford did take bail out money. I think that a recall would be the proper action for the Ford. Motor company. I am one of thousands of consumers who have been abandoned by another big company.
2002 Ford Explorer xls, driving o/d light came on and transmission started failing to shift correctly, needs complete transmission rebuild.
This is the second time my o/d off light has started flashing and now the transmission has started shifting extremely hard. I have now been told that I need to have my transmission rebuilt. That is a $2800 job. This is after a year and half ago I had the same problem with this vehicle and had to have the transmission replaced. Which was a $2400 job. I don't see exactly how I could have gone through two transmissions in less than two years with the exact same problem.

O/d off light blinks on dashboard and vehicle shifts hard. Was advised that transmission rebuild was necessary.
O/d light started flashing, suddenly my car stopped shifting correctly. The car was never driven hard and is an automatic. After taking it to a transmission shop and doing some research I found that my transmission needed replaced and that it was not covered under warranty and costs around 3000 dollars to replace.
Transmission problems started around 100k miles; high rpm shifting between 1st and 2nd gear with subsequent flashing o/d light. Many times transmission will "clunk" into gear either from going into reverse, stopping completely, then shifting into drive and/or when putting in reverse or drive. Appears this is a common problem for my model year Explorer (03) and same code many others receive (p0775) which really does not describe the problem or lead a not so mechanical inclined person to try and troubleshoot/buy parts to fix. I'm career military man w/family and my truck is paid off next month--owned 5 years and really sucks to have to possibly dump $3k into a truck that Ford has known contained issues with the 5r55w transmission.
Got into my 2002 Ford Explorer today and my overdrive light was flashing and when I drove off, it revved up in the 300-400 rpm and shifted very hard. I have never driven offroad or very hard at all. Taking it to a mechanic Monday, but we have dealt with enough cars to know that the transmission is going to blow up soon.
When driving the o/d light came on and started flashing erratically, then I was unable to shift from 1st to 2nd gear. The only way I can shift from 1st to 2nd gear is if I let the rpm's go up above 3,000 and 4,000. Then I can take my foot off the gas and it will switch into 3rd gear. I have not drove the truck since it started doing this, the only time I have drove it was to go to the mechanic. The mechanic says it is what makes the gears shift that is causing the problem. The only way to fix it is to put a new or rebuilt transmission into my 2002 Ford Explorer. On the way home from the mechanic it started slamming into gears.
2002 Ford Explorer transmission experienced problem. The overdrive light began flashing and the vehicle shifted into neutral. There was no down hill engine braking. I stopped the vehicle and turned the engine off. When I restarted the vehicle the overdrive light was off and remained off for a few weeks. It is now back on again. I feel that the transmission shifting into neutral and not providing braking when going down a hill is a safety hazard.
Overdrive light is blinking and check transmission is indicated in message window. Does reset when truck is turned off but warning comes back when driving again. At this time vehicle does 'clunk' when going into reverse. It is still shifting through 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc ok. I had the transmission rebuilt by Ford dealer at 50k miles (3/24/06), currently have 75k miles on vehicle(10/11/10).
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. The contact stated that the overdrive warning light would continuously flash. The failure would occur sporadically whether the vehicle was in over drive or not. The contact stated that when placed in park, the vehicle would continue to roll further than usual. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair facility where the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure or generate a failure code. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileage was 118,000.
We own a 2002 Ford Explorer that we have kept up all the maintenance on. We have owned if since June of 2008 (bought it from a used car dealer) and have had no really big major issues until now. The o/d off light is flashing which is causing the transmission to get mixed signals as to if the over drive is on or off. Which causes the transmission to shift hard and actually try to lock up at some times. It has been going on for about 4 days now and in our manual it says to take and have it serviced as soon as possible. Well we did and the mechanic says that there is nothing we can do to fix it except rebuild/replace the entire transmission. Online this is a very common problem in this year model and pretty much anyone we have spoken with that has owned these vehicles prior says that the transmission will go out around 175000 miles. We are at 174789 so we are right on course. We do not drive it hard or crazy and we take very good care of all our vehicles. We have never had an issue with an transmission.
My 2002 Ford Explorer transmission failed. I was traveling on an on ramp. When the o/d light started to flicker and there was a sudden powerful jerk. It was similar to getting rear ended. The failure occurs above 35 mph. The consequences are sudden uncontrollable jerks. In order to correct the failure the transmission must be rebuilt for a vehicle under 80,000 miles.
We bought a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 2 weeks ago with 129,000 miles within 2 days of owning this vehicle, the o/d light started blinking. Upon investigation with transmission repair locations, we have to spend $2500. 00 or more to replace the entire transmission! what a rip off, after researching this issue, it is quite obvious that Ford needs to recall this vehicle, step up to the plate, and help their customers out who have put trust in their vehicles! if Ford wants to stay in business, they better start considering reconciling with their many disgruntled customers. Thank you.
