36 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/18/2009

1. The events leading up to the failure are simple. It was a quiet Saturday afternoon (4:30 pm on 7/18/09). I was on a two way street on the way to my sweetheart's house in overland park, KS . I was going at about 25 mph. There was one other car in my vision about 75 feet behind me. No one was coming at me. To my right was an empty baseball diamond for the local high school and to my left was a large ( at least 10 feet tall) concrete wall enclosing an upscale housing development. 2. Without warning I hear an explosion followed immediately by shattering glass from my sunroof cascading down upon me. The explosion was just the sound of the sunroof shattering. As god is my witness, I swear tt just shattered from causes beyond my knowledge. 3. The following Monday morning I took it to the Ford dealership where I had purchased it and replaced the sunroof. My bumper-to-bumper warranty was still in force but Ford motor refused to hone up on this one. The service manager said that Ford doesn't know but what it was shot out accidentally broken out or if someone had put their fist through it. The strange thing was the sunroof glass that was still in the sunroof frame was angling upward as if it had been struck from inside. The service manager pointed this out to me. The local dealership did split the cost of replacement with me though.

41 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/04/2008

When deck glass was raised the left hinge broke causing the glass to fall. I caught the glass preventing it from shattering on the pavement. The weight of the deck glass then caused the right hinge to break. Had to replace hinges through a auto body shop. This could have caused serious injuries! my quick reaction in catching the glass prevented any injuries. Had my children been with me it could have been a different situation. After doing research I found that previous year model Ford Explorers have been recalled for this same thing happening.

Both sun visors in my 2005 Explorer broke within a day of each other. The small plastic holder on each of them shatter into microscopic pieces with nothing on the visors. No cd holders or sunglasses either. They just broke while driving down the road. They were both folded up and not being used. It was very strange. It happened when I was driving and I felt like it was very dangerous because it dangled by a wire that could not be cut due to what it was connected to. I tried electrical tape and anything I could think of but it would not stay up. I could not get an appt until the following week and had to drive with this obstruction for 2 days. Not only was it annoying but it was very unsafe. Of course, my warranty had expired two months prior to this incident. It cost me $205. 00 to have this repaired and I feel like this could be a recall issue because I have seen more complaints online by several other people with this car.

Safety concern: 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. Defective applique located below tailgate glass has developed a crack from top to bottom. The location of this crack is approximately 3 inches to the left of the Ford emblem. The dealer sent me to the body shop, which provided me with an estimate of $334. 68 to replace the defective part. Although the dealership was familiar with this problem, my vehicle has approximately 105,000 miles and as a result the dealership would not pursue this a warrantable repair. They essentially ignored my grievance. As a left the dealership, I happen to notice a blue 2002 Explorer similar to mine on the used car lot. As I approached the vehicle I noticed it had the identical crack (from top to bottom), located in the same position (3 inches to the left of the Ford emblem). This vehicle; VIN #1fmdu73e72zco6416 had only 56,069 miles on it. I contacted Ford at 800 392-3673 and spoke with jennifer. The reference number for my complaint is; ref #1428853335. Jennifer investigated and confirmed that a bulletin had been issued for this complaint with instructions for its repair. However, Ford has not yet agreed to pay for any repairs or to reimburse the consumer for any repairs already made. This is a safety concern as this applique could break off and cause serious damage to another vehicle or passerby. I made this concern know to jennifer, but was assured that it had not been deemed a recall repair.
