1 Tire Bulge problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/13/2021

While driving home from work last week I noticed a slight 'bumping' feel like an unbalanced tire, so I took a look when I got to my driveway but found nothing. The next day on my way to work the "bumping' was much worse so I stopped to check and found a large bulge on the tread of the right front tire. After slowly returning home I removed it and set it aside. A few hours later the treads were separating badly so I let the air out before it blew apart. I ordered a replacement tire(different brand) but I've still got three more of these on the vehicle . They have 36k miles on them and a 60k warranty with only modest tread wear but I still check them every day. I don't feel safe.

5 Tire Bulge problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/23/2000

The firestone wilderness at p255/70r16 tires listed in the report were on the rear vehicle (Ford 1997 Explorer, eddie bower 4x4, 4 door model). These tires appeared to be original. Total vehicle miles were approximately 62,000 miles. Tread wear was excellent for these tires. There is approximately one-fourth inch tread left on these tires. I have been inspecting each of the vehicle's tires before and after each day's commute. I noticed small fractures developing at the edge of the tread where it meets the sidewall of the tire. Both rear tires exhibited the small fractures. During the last inspection (on 08/23/00), I noticed the fractures widening significantly. At least one of the fractures on the outer side of the left rear tire exhibited steel wires protruding from the bulge. I immediately discontinued use of the vehicle and contacted a local firestone representative. Because the tires are not part of their recall, they offered to inspect and possibly prorate warranty. I did not want firestone replacements because I believe that these model tires have design defects. I had all four wilderness tires on the vehicle replaced by the local Ford dealer. The second rear tire had larger bulges and steel wire protrusions on the inside of the tire. I believe that these two rear tires were in imminent danger of catastrophic tread separation. The front tires appear to have been replaced and I do not think they are original. They appear newer with much more tread remaining than the rear tires. No obvious signs of defect appear on the front tires. The front tire specifics follow: wilderness at p255/70r16. Dot vdcu1px119. Thank you for your attention, kent e. Parrish( dot number: w2cu1px076 tire size: p255/70r16 ).

6 Tire Bulge problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/08/1998

Our Explorer was in the dealership's shop to fix a transmission failure. While in, I asked them to look at a vibration in the steering wheel that intensified while braking. The response on the work order for a vehicle that had just 17,000 miles on it, "tires have rib wear" and "poor quality tires causing vibration". At the time Ford nor firestone would replace the tires despite the fact that their own personnel noted that the are poor quality tires. Now, with all of the talk of unsafe firestone tires, I am very concerned that the wilderness ht tires are not included in the recall. I am very concerned that the NHTSA is not looking at all possible poor quality tires and demanding that firestone replace these tires as well. Your assistance in bringing the issue of the wilderness ht tires out will be greatly appreciated. By the way, the tires are bulging and not wearing well at this time.
