36 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/06/2007

While I was towing a trailer that was well under the weight limit for the vehicle, the transmission began leaking fluid. Due to the design of the exhaust system, the fluid leaked directly onto the hot exhaust pipe under the vehicle, which caused large amounts of smoke to come from under the vehicle. I was stranded on the side of a busy freeway with the vehicle smoking profusely. The transmission was covered under the warranty, and the dealer repaired the transmission on site. It took almost four weeks to get our vehicle back from the dealer. I fear that a large transmission fluid leak on one of these faulty designed vehicle could start a fire or cause a serious accident in the future.

38 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2000 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/25/2005

Vehicle underwent 95000 mile inspection which included change of transmission fluid and filter in oct 06. In Feb the transmission failed on return from short trip. Local Ford garage advised that likely cause was leaking transmission seal. There was no evidence of any transmission leak on driveway, or garage floor. There was no problem with vehicle not shifting correctly until evening of problem. It was as if all fluid was lost at once but garage claims that it was pressure leak?.

39 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/24/2003

When my 1999 Ford Explorer had approximately 60,000 miles, it went into the repair shop to have the transmission replaced. At that time, I complained that there was transmission fluid leaking near the radiator. About 6 months later, when the vehicle had approximately 70,000 miles, it went back to the repair shop for transmission troubles, at which time several of the clutches in the transmission had to be replaced. The car was released from the dealer on a Friday night, but was returned approximately 12 hours later due to hesitation of the vehicle when driving and because the overdrive light was blinking off and on. Approximately three weeks later the car went back into the shop, again for leaking transmission fluid near the radiator. The radiator has had to be replaced due to a crack where a transmission fluid line came into contact with the radiator. There seems to be a problem with every component involved with the transmission on this Explorer.

40 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/18/2003

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. The contact has been having a problem with the rear end. The rear end made an extremely loud roaring sound. Took the vehicle the vehicle to three different repair shops. One said it was the tires, and the other two maintained that it was an expensive rear end problem. She talked to other people with this same type of vehicle and they all had this problem. Also, had a ring and pinion replaced in the rear end not long after she purchased the vehicle. Currently, they told her that this what was needed to be replaced again along with other parts , including the rear axle. This noise originally started at 55-65 mph, and now it was making noise at 40-70 mph. After going over 70 mph could not hear it as badly. Also, the vehicle was leaking fluid from the ring and pinion. A strange sound that was coming from under the hood, like a buzzing sound that sounds like transmission. In addition, the hatchback glass fell on the contact's head. It just popped out. This happened twice. They do not even attempt to open the glass in the hatch. The dealership where she purcahsed her vehicle still has records of what was replaced on vehicle.
