Failure Date: 04/13/2012

2011 Ford Explorer was parked. Started car and power steering failure light came on alarms sounding and steering wheel was locked, yet car would back up . . . Straight. Prior to this incident when car was stopped at a light it seemed to have a transmission slip or jump. After waiting for an hour for tow truck the Explorer started fine and steering seemed to work. Too nervous to drive. Car was towed to Ford dealer.

38 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/18/2011

Just bought this car. Transmission was having trouble shifting gears and is now slipping. This should be a recall, as I have found too many complaints about this transmission falling apart. Ford should fix this issue and replace with a different transmission. I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a transmission that is bound to fail again. This is a blatant missed recall. The trans is model 5r55s. Please recall this.

41 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/18/2011

Took our 2005 Ford Explorer to service dept. Before warranty expired-previously alexander Ford, now Ford of murfreesboro. The transmission had been slipping periodically at the time. They drove it & said nothing was noticeable. I indicated to them that it slipped maybe once or twice every month or so. Now vehicle is out of warranty. I was driving in traffic and the transmission slipped on me. I had a car in front of me & when it finally let up, I almost hit the vehicle in front of me-with a baby in a car seat in the back seat. When I slammed on my breaks after the tranmission kicked in, I suffered whiplash. It scared me to death. There appear to be so many tranmission problems with the 2005 Explorers. This is dangerous and someone should do something about it for a recall. They should have checked my vehicle out more extensively rather than barely drive it for a few minutes when it was under warranty. I could have injured a child & I did injure myself.

42 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/11/2011

I bought my Ford Explorer in 2006 but three years later had to replace the radiator. After that I notice that the transmission would slip every now and then. The problem seems to have escalated since June 2013 with the vehicle jacking or dragging before shifting gears. My wife is actually afraid of driving this vehicle and instead prefers to drive my 2000 Honda accord which has been running with no problems. I took the vehicle to my mechanic who told me this has been a problem with the model and year of my Ford Explorer and that the transmission will need to be replaced and so he told me I should file this complain since this was not our fault but a factory defect which by the look of what I have seen on this site, Ford is aware of. My question is why has Ford not recalled this because after checking this site, I have seen so many complains about the same related issues (mainly radiator and transmission), are customers supposed to suffer and spend money for things that the Ford company has neglected or for their poor workmanship? I believe not. Ford needs to get their act together and solve this problems for their customers. I, just like everyone who bought a Ford Explorer would like to see our automakers doing well and that's why we buy the cars but not at the expense of our families safety or finances.

43 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/10/2011

The transmission started to slip in may of 2011. I had the transmission serviced and it did not correct the problem. I am unable to check the transmission fluid as it is a sealed unit no dip stick. We drove the vehicle until it no longer moves. The cost to replace the transmission is 2800. 00 plus. . . There was no reason why this should have happened.

44 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/12/2011

2002 Ford Explorer-transmission failure-130,000 miles-July 12, 2011 transmission rebuilt at 119,000 miles on Jan. 13, 2010 by a local Ford dealer- both failures consisted of the transmission slipping in and out of gear during normal driving. In heavy traffic this is a very dangerous situation. The vehicle suddenly loses speed and passengers are subject to rear end impact or sudden surges of speed when the transmission slips back into gear, causing a possible rear end impact with another vehicle. In addition, the transmission sticks in one gear and will not shift. Ford motor company has been aware of the problems with this type of transmission since 2002. My local dealer says that fmc figures revealed that 30% of vehicles equiped with this tranmission experienced failure of some type. However fmc offerd very little relief to its customers. I believe that it is time for an immediate forced recall of this transmission.

45 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/05/2011

Transmission is slipping, not fully gone yet, only a matter of time before it completely goes. I do not have the $2500. 00 to replace the transmission. Every person I have talked to say this is a common problem with the Ford Explorers. I have taken into the garage over 10 times. Ford should be forced to recall these transmissions and Ford should have to pay for it.

49 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

Transmission failure in 2010, almost caused vehilce accident on the highway; was rebuilt in March 2011, but transmission is slipping again and it is now August 2011. I have been checking several different websites and I received 1 recall letter in the mail but happened to notice there is another recall. If all of these problems are continuing to happen, why is a recall on the entire truck not done? it is obviously a defective vehicle. I have 2 small children, one with a medical issue that has to travel for her doctor visits. These problems are getting out of hand. I can not believe it has gone this long and nothing has been done about it. There is also the issue with the non working air compressor and the bad electrical system as well as the roaring in the back tires. As much as I travel with my children and get from pount a to b, im suprised this thing has not fallen apart. I was a sucker for a pretty truck!!.

I bought this last year and took it back to where I bought it 2 days later and they had the transmission shop they deal with look at it and was told there's nothing wrong. When I go to put it in drive or reverse the vehicle wont move. Once I start driving the transmission keeps slipping and when stopped at red light or stop sign I have to be very cautious because it wont go and wants to drift backwards and wants to stall and I don't want to cause an accident by drifting into someone. I have to deal with this everyday and it's getting old now. The second issue is the rear hatch/door. . 66 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/10/2009

I was driving down the highway and without warning my od off light started flicking and my car felt as if it slipped into neutral. I could not keep up to speed and my car started slowing down. I was very lucky to be in the right hand lane and could pull over to the side of the road without causing a major accident. I turned the car off and then back on and it was fine, the light was off and the gears worked as should. Around 40 miles later, I was off the main highway and at a stop light, as I accelerated, the od light started blinking again and shifting was hard, then again once I was up to speed it felt as if the gears slipped, I could not accelerate and the car slowed. What saved me this time was I was off the major highway and on a side country road with very little traffic. This happened October 10, 2009. The car has not yet been serviced as it was over the weekend this happened and today being a holiday, my kids are out of school, and I will not put their lives in danger to drive to the dealership. Like I said there was no warning to these events. I feel very lucky that I was able to avoid an accident.
