2 Water Pump problem of the 2017 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/24/2023

Overheating warning illuminated, resulted in vehicle shutting down while briefly pulling over in a parking lot to get directions to a specific hospital entrance. Stop to shut down, about 1 min. This has occurred a total of 7 other times over the course of the last 12 months, beginning with the first one in July of 2022. My wife was idling while awaiting to pick up the kids from a gymnastics class. Overheating warning illuminated, resulting in the vehicle shutting down. A mechanic we know was also there awaiting his children and discovered very low coolant level. It was filled & things seemed fine until this spring, where it is a bi-weekly occurrence. Coolant bottles are on stand-by as we have no other option. Even if the water pump is failing, this is all we have to work with. Our other vehicle just shut down mid-drive in March. It was towed to the mechanic. Here we are nearly 5 months later and he doesn’t have a guess at what the problem might actually be. That vehicle, a 2012 Ford focus se.

4 Water Pump problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/11/2022

In 11-2022, (November 2022), I noticed no heat in cabin and after further investigation, found low coolant in the coolant reservoir. I added coolant but started noticing coolant leaks on driveways. Had vehicle checked by Ford dealer, where the vehicle was bought new, and regularly serviced; and was told that the water pump inside the 3. 5l engine is bad with a cost of $4,900 to fix. It appears that there are numerous Ford Explorer vehicles from 2011 - 2019 with the 3. 5l engine with this issue. Request investigation and recall by Ford.

Water pump! water pump! water pump! the same exact issue with every other Ford Explorer that they knew about when coming off the assembly lines and not doing anything to be held accountable. 12 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/13/2021

Driving at 35 mph the car lost all power and just stopped. The engine shut off. No warning lights or alarms went off beforehand. Once the car stopped, the engine light came on and an alarm sounded. We called a tow truck and had it towed to Ford. They called this morning and said the water pump went out causing catastrophic damage to the engine. The engine has to be replaced. They quoted $8,000. 00. 8 weeks ago, while driving on the highway, my power steering went out without warning. I lost all power steering and then the power steering alarm came on. Took it to Ford and had the power steering replaced at a cost of $1800. 00. Then, less then 2 weeks later while driving at 40 mph, the power steering went out again. And again, no warning lights until the power steering wen out. Ford said it was because my tires had low tread and I needed to replace my front tires, which we had them do. 8 months ago, the transfer case went out and had to be replaced.

14 Water Pump problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/18/2020

I purchased a 2016 Explorer limited from a Ford dealer and noticed it was low on coolant, was told it would be filled and of course it wasn't, I filled it myself. A week later it was low again, took it to a chevy dealer and was told the water pump is leaking. I contacted the selling dealer and left a voicemail and no one returned my call. I called back a couple weeks later and was told it isn't covered under their 30 day/1000 mile warranty. I contacted Ford and was told no assistance because I'm not the original owner, should that matter with 69500 miles??? I was told to call a local dealer maybe they can help me. The water pump on this vehicle is mounted internally and driven by the timing chain and cost about 1500. 00 to replace. So far after a used purchase I'll have $25,000 into a vehicle they may turn into a brick. I have bought and leased several new Ford vehicles and this is how they treat customers, including having retired family members.

18 Water Pump problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/15/2020

My water pump has gone out and apparently this has not been the only one.

19 Water Pump problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/08/2020

I have a 2016 Ford Explorer with 94,000 miles. We noticed that the ac was blowing hot air so we took the car in for a repair on 9/8/2020. The dealership called us back to inform us that the water pump had failed which caused antifreeze to leak into and on the ac compressor causing it to fail. We were quoted a price of $2600. 00 for the repair the water pump. I was also told that many police cruisers with the same motor are having the same issue. Ford recommends that the water pump be replaced at 150000 miles the miles on the SUV are highway miles.

20 Water Pump problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/05/2020

The Explorer only has 46000 miles on it and the water pump failed causing coolant to leak. We park it in our garage and I'm very observant so I noticed almost immediately my wife drives this with our children in it and we bought it because it was supposed to be built Ford tough and I was expecting at least 100,000 miles before things like this would start happening. If I didn't notice right away the car may have overheated and could have left my family on the side of the freeway or in the middle of a lane. I took it the local dealer for diagnosis and repair. This is where I found out it was actually the water pump. The total cost to replace the water pump just under $2800 because it is actually in the engine. Fords recommendation is the water pump should be replaced at 100,000 miles and should actually last 150000 miles. There must be some admission of responsibility on their part because the service writer at the dealer assured me that the part has been upgraded since original design based on a b at the end of the part number. A company like Ford should stand behind their product and if they know there is a issue they should fix it.

21 Water Pump problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/11/2020

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle the engine coolant over temperature message was displayed on the instrument panel. The local dealer mcgovern Ford located at 1212 westford st, lowell, MA 01851 and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 16v183000 (engine, engine cooling). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 99,000.

22 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/05/2020

While driving with my 3 young kids on a busy road, my water pump failed and catastrophically damaged my engine. My car turned off while driving, with no warning. We were almost involved in a horrible car accident because of this. The car behind me had to make an abrupt stop. Had he hit my car, we would have spun because of the force. The water pump fails and because it's inside the engine, it damages the engine in seconds without prior warning. This type of problem puts people's lives in danger, especially those of kids. Leaves you stranded in the middle of a high traffic street. Without warning there is no way we can prevent putting our lives in danger this way. Ford states that water pumps should last the life of the engine and its manual doesn't state that the water pump needs to be replaced after certain miles. Repair shop is quoting 6,000 for a new engine.

23 Water Pump problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/15/2020

I own a 2016 Ford Explorer which has 78,146 miles and while driving the engine light came on and the vehicle stalled without warning. I had to put my car in neutral and coast to the side of the road with my children in the car. I just purchased this vehicle from everett Ford in benton, arkansas less than a year ago and have had normal routine maintenance completed according the the owners manual. After having a mechanic take a look it is a result of a faulty water pump in which I was quoted $2500-$3500 for a replacement in addition the engine would be several thousand. The problem is that the water pump is inside the engine and so when the water pump fails it destroys the engine without warning by mixing the coolant with the engine oil. After looking into this further the dealership and the manufacturer were aware of this mechanical defect and the thousands of customers that were affected but continue to advertise built Ford toughto drive sales and did not warn customers or make them aware. This is a safety concern for all owners of the Ford duratec v6 engine and there should be a forced recall by the national highway safety administration. Do not wait for there to be deaths from this mechanical defect before taking action. Ford should take responsibility. I am a loyal customer of Ford but will be getting rid of my vehicle and making sure all Ford owners are aware and you cannot trust Ford when they are aware of a safety related mechanical failure and they are not taking responsibility or even notifying its loyal customers!.

24 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/10/2020

Tl-the contact owns a 2011 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving the vehicle started to lose power and overheat. The contact pulled over and found out the water pump went out. The engine was designed with the water pump built inside. When the water pump malfunctions the coolent will go inside the engine causing it to shut down. The dealer jefferson motor CO inc 141 lee st, jefferson, GA 30549 (706) 367-5217 stated that they could not set an appointment for three weeks. The replacement cost for a new engine was quoted to be over $8,000. The replacement engine has the same design flaw of the water pump built on the inside. The contact stated there was a class action lawsuit on this issue. The manufacturer stated that the warranty expired. The vehicle was currently unrepaired at this time. The failure mileage was 136,000. Tf.

25 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/02/2020

Vehicle overheated without warning leaving me stranded on a deserted highway. After speaking with a mechanic and having them come to the vehicles location and performing a visual inspection he stated antifreeze was leaking from the water pump. The vehicle was taken to a local Ford dealer and upon completing a diagnostic check they confirmed the internal water pump had failed without warning. I was contacted 5 times by the dealership and each time the news got worse. Then final call the advisor told me to fix it and nothing was going to be guaranteed to last it was going to cost approximately $4,000 before taxes. They'd also have to change the oil twice along with the spark plugs. The vehicle had just been at a local Ford dealership for maintenance and to fix outstanding recalls and after checking the service manual nothing is suggested recommended or required to service the internal water pump.

26 Water Pump problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/03/2020

Four 2013 Ford Explorer ran hot while I was operating the vehicle. We thought it was low on antifreeze so we added some. Out of precaution, we began monitoring the antifreeze level and notice that the level would drop, over a couple of weeks, enough which required us to have to add more antifreeze. My wife called Ford's service department to schedule an appointment to determine/confirm the problem. We were told that it sounds like the water pump was may be defective. On our way to the appointment, the vehicle shut down and had to be towed the rest of the way. Upon inspection, we were told that antifreeze had leaked into the engine, and further, the engine was damaged because of a broken timing chain.

27 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Ford Explorer

[to replace steering and engine] this is the first one (it seems to be headed in the same direction but only sooner) *please help me I can't afford this again**while driving on the highway, my power steering went out without warning. 8 months ago, the transfer case went out and had to be replaced also when placed in park vehicle shut off completely showing a low pressure oil lamp. Happened in my first engine now it's happening in this new one and its not 2yrs old yet just got the new engine may/ June of 2019. The first engine wasn't 10 years old . The first engine all this happened approximately between 2016 and 2019 ongoing until 2019 I guess the water pump gave up. O1 o1 2020 for the second engine on the same course as the first.

29 Water Pump problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/10/2019

2014 Explorer continuously leaking coolant near front passenger tire. Dealership refilled coolant and performed a pressure test and was unable to duplicate the problem. 32 Water Pump problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/19/2019

On my 2015 Ford Explorer XLT, the water pump which is encased inside the cyclone/duratec engine, broke and leaked coolant which was mixed with the oil, tge oil pan and the oil pump causing complete engine failure. There was no advance warning and Ford has not issued a recall although a number of models have been affected. This caused me to have to replace my engine at my expense. Ford motor company has not taken any steps to resolve my or this issue with the vehicle owner having to resolve the issue at their own expense.

33 Water Pump problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

34 Water Pump problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/19/2019

Vehicle's water pump began leaking during a normal patrol shift. We have had several of these fail at various mileages and each repair that was not under warranty has cost us around $2000. 00 each time. I know these are not isolated incidents and that these water pumps fail often. I recall being at a fleet conference this past August and seeing a slide during a presentation from Ford and it showing the casting difference between the old style and new style pump. The old casting was thinner near the seal area and that allowed for excessive heat which caused the seal to fail. The new style pump has a thicker casting to prevent this fault. I would like to see a warranty extension or recall on the these pumps just like Ford ended up doing for the catalytic converters.

35 Water Pump problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/09/2019

The engine began leaking coolant caused by the water pump seal failing. We have had several others that also have had water pump failures.
