36 Water Pump problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/01/2019

On Sunday septermber 1st while I was driving back home a light on my dashboard came on, it said "engine coolant over temperature" in red light. I was scare because I was stuck in the freeway and I was still far away from him and my kids were in the back. I drove very slow and managed to get home. On Tuesday I took my car to the Ford dealership and they told me that I have to replace my water pump, and it was a hard and long service and that it was going to cost me $3,300. I am surprise of how much that costs, especially that it happened on my 2014 Ford Explorer. I bought it brand new and I've been taking it to Ford dealership every 7,000 miles to get the maintenance. Plus, the last time that I took it in to the dealership for its oil change, they said that everything was working well. So for my surprise to have this happen especially when my car only has 82,316 miles. The light turns on when the car is in motion. I can hear the engine working extra hard to compensate whatever else is going on.

At 80,000 miles the transmission had to be replace (out of warranty). Require new battery and cables after batter "exploded" corroding the battery cables. (68,000 miles). Required a new water pump at 86,000 miles.

Chain driven water pump failure at 85,000 miles.

39 Water Pump problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/13/2019

Water pump started leaking at 54000 miles right out of warranty. Was told needed replacement or else engine would seize. Paid over $2,100 to get it replaced. Stupid design and hard labor to get to it. Car has vibration now ever since we had it repaired but thought it was normal leaving dealer. I don't know why this hasn't been recalled. Now, the parking aid went out. These cars are horrendous.

40 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/23/2018

We were traveling I-26 from SC back into nc after thanksgiving. My car dinged and said coolant temp was too high. Thankfully I was right at a rest area and immediately pulled in and turned off the car. Tried adding coolant and it poured out the bottom. Had my Explorer towed to my mechanic. Turns out the water pump blew. In most cases a water pump replacement is not a big deal. Except whoever designed this engine was not thinking because the water pump is inside the engine. So even to replace the water pump (a part costing less then $200), the labor makes it at closer to $1500. But, also, because the water pump is inside the engine, when it blew, coolant and water went into my engine causing engine failure, meaning the whole engine now needs to be replaced. So a car with 71,000 miles on it needs a whole new engine because of a water pump. I am thankful I was in a position to pull over immediately, because if the engine had gone out on the busy interstate, that could have been a terrible crash. If a water pump can cause engine failure, that is not a car I want to be in with my children. Dangerous not only to us, but to others traveling near us. Ford needs to rethink this design. Not only is it costly to repair, but more importantly it can be very dangerous.

41 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

My 2011 Ford Explorer was in motion on a city street when the water pump immediately failed. This happened without warning. There were no check engine lights or warning signs. My temperature gauge shot up and my engine seized. The engine is unable to be turned on at this time.

42 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/25/2018

Was driving the car and as soon as we pull in the parking lot the engine light came on and the car won't move. It was towed to Ford mechanic and they said the water pump was fault which made the coolant to enter the engine hence messing up the engine and I needed to replace the engine. It cost me arms and legs to fix the engine. Ford need to recall water pump failure which is leading to costly fixing of the engine. The roof was also leaking and the water was dripping through back seat belt. Today I was pulling off the parking the power steering fault light came on , and it was hard to turn the steering . This car has a lot if prblems .

43 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

I have had this truck for ruffly 3yrs. When I first bought the car something was wrong with it immediately. . . . I was driving to the mail box after getting home from about a 30min trip. The whole car cut off lights were dim in the car, steering had locked very hard to turn. . . Automax in killeen took the car in for service. Had the new purchased truck for a month and 2 days. Their service team told me it was the battery. I felt other wise and no longer wanted the car. But of course by this time all paperwork had went through to the bank. . . . . . Drove the truck fine for about 8months, then broke down the same way as the very first time but on a bridge this time. . . . . . This time around I was told it was the engine, got a second opinion, said person said water pump. I fixed the water pump. Now guess what??? its actually the engine. . . . I am blown away by how many problems I have had with this Ford Explorer. . . . . I thought I was making a great purchase going with a Ford. This truck sat in the driveway for a year while in nursing school. . . . . I am lost and at my wits end. . . . . When I look for recalls all I am seeing is suspension issues or towing. . . . When I talk to mechanics they say these models are know for bad engines, thus is another reason why the 2011 Ford Explorer engines are more expensive. . . . . I am looking for help. Has anyone else had these same issues. I owe 14000 still on this truck and how could it need a new engine already?.

44 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

Its a known fact that while driving, the water pumps suddenly break with no prior warning/symptom. Fluids mix as a result, contaminated fluids mandate complete engine replacement . Ford motor CO. Will not assume any responsibility or offer one bit of assistance for repair costs when dealerships could have offered water pump replacement as a preventative maintenance item. Dealership is now asking me for $7100. 00 to replace engine when this all could have been circumvented with a simple maintenance recommendation from the dealers who know this is going to happen. Vehicle was purchased pre-owned from a Ford dealer with a Ford 100,000 mile extended warranty (which expired as of my last oil change) and I am still paying off the vehicle itself. Ford had the audacity to say "you can apply for a Ford credit card to pay for your engine" when I told them that $7,100. 00+ tax is currently outside of my lump sum current budget parameters. Ford assumes no level of accountability for these poorly manufactured cars and the consumers who purchase them are sheer victims. Never will another Ford be purchased within my family again if they do not step up to the plate and offer some form of assistance for this all too common malfunction.

45 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/16/2017

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Explorer. While driving approximately 45 mph, the engine stalled without warning. A few minutes later, the low oil pressure indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to perry Ford of poway (12740 poway rd, poway, CA 92064) where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced, and also the water pump failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

46 Water Pump problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/27/2017

Engine coolant overheating - about 30 days ago, my car began overheating and it was discovered that I was out of engine coolant. Refilled and let it sit for a few days and no 30 days later my car is doing the same thing. Place service call and it was determined that I needed a new water pump. 1 year old car and already had to have the oil sending unit replaced and now a new water pump.

47 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/28/2016

Have extensive engine damage due to water pump failure with no warning! I was driving my vehicle down a main highway and all of a sudden the "engine coolant overtemp" came on then "low oil pressure" and my vehicle shut down! I couldn't drive the vehicle. Luckily I drifted to side of the road so that my car could be towed without having an accident! shop determined water pump failure and water leaked into my engine poor engine design on Fords part) and destroyed the engine with no warning! no engine light came on or anything. Please investigate this. There are numerous complaints about this same situation. I called Ford to complain but all they did was take down my compliant. This is a safety issue because I was driving in traffic and this could have caused an accident. The whole car just shut down!.

48 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/13/2016

Long story short, I pulled out of my neighborhood got about a quarter of a mile down the road. Heard the drive belt squeal for about 15 seconds, followed by check engine light, and extreme engine knock. The vehicle was shut off immediately. The codes read, crankshaft/camshaft correlation bank a sensor 1, the second code was engine knock. Vehicle towed to the dealer were they had 2 of their top technicians look at the vehicle and the both reported the water pump had failed and filled the engine up with coolant which cause the engine to expire. My wife only had the truck for 2 years and she's very careful driver. No woarning signs of a failing water pump. Just got back from a 7hr road trip a week before the water pump failed and the engine expired.

50 Water Pump problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/08/2013

The original equipment harmonic balancer came apart. The inner portion separated from the rest. This allows. It would have caused the destruction of the serpentine belt, and crankshaft position sensor if I had not caught it in time. This would have resulted in loss of engine power, loss of power steering, and loss of power brakes! this seems to be a common problem with the 2004 Ford 4. 0 liter v6. This could result in somebody losing control of the vehicle with little or no warning. I was replacing the water pump on my vehicle when I saw this defect.

52 Water Pump problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/21/2001

Backed out of driveway and proceeded down street at about 10 mph. Engine made a "thunk" noise and went into a "no start" condition. My '97 Explorer was towed to the dealer who diagnosed the problem as a snapped crankshaft. At 103k miles the dealer did not acknowledge that this was any sort of manufacturing defect and emphatically stated that they'd never heard of this problem. They refused customer request that they review NHTSA webiste for history of prior reports. The dealer stated that the engine was only designed to last 100k miles but that might be extended with regular oil changes. This customer asked if engine replacement at 100k miles was an expected event and the dealer repeated that it could be. Ford's national customer service was no help. The zone manager would not meet to discuss the problem. Customer paid $4,800 to replace the engine. Customer kept the broken shaft which shows multiple internal surface textures. To date there have been other complaints about this same problem without a response on this safety and manufacturing issue from Ford. Other websites report Ford employees aware of this problem, loosely referred to as a "stacking of tolerences" whereby the tolerences exert pressure on the crankshaft just behind the key where it attaches to the dampner. This is reportedly not a condition that the owner can prevent, diagnose or otherwise be aware of until the crankshaft breaks. Ford reportedly cannot make a prior determination either, seemingly leaving it to chance whether a vehicle will have problems. Certain engine compnents are expected to fail during engine life such as water pumps, alternators and so forth but major components should not. Ford should address this issue by revealing the design life of the crankshaft. J. D. Powers relayed to this customer that crankshafts are routinely designed to last 200 - 250k miles, contrary to dealer assertations. The NHTSA needs to investigate this issue and take appropriate action.
