While driving 1997 Ford explorer XLT 4x4 v6 sohc upon acceleration on to freeway, the gas peddle stuck to floor and would not release. The result was a blown engine/small fire,no injuries thank god, because the only way to stop vehicle was to put into neutral and then park. The foot brake and emergency brake were useless, and the vehicle was revving at 75 mph at the time till brought to stop thus blowing a huge hole in wall of engine to the tune of $5000. 00 to fix. Ford claimed there was nothing wrong with pedal after doing a diagnostic. This throttle was recalled a few years ago and Ford claimed that they fixed it.

Hit brakes and engine accelerates. The cause is that the brake pedal and gas pedal are to close together and same distance from floorboard. I wear a size 14 shoe and when I normally hit brake, my heel stays in place and my foot also covers the gas when I press real hard. I own other vehicles and this does not happen.

After having come to a full stop, the engine accelerated without my foot on the gas. This has happened twice. Both times I was at a full stop with my foot on the brake. Only the first incident date is noted. The second happened in July 2003.

Accelerator in a Ford Explorer Sport Trac engaged without driver input causing the vehicle to rapidly accelerate into another vehicle. Brakes were applied but were unable to prevent the crash - air bags deployed causing the engine to shut off thus stopping the vehicle.
