My vehicle's engine has on a number of occasions simply quit running. The engine has died while underway, and also when resuming from a stop. It will or has to this point cranked without problems each time this has happened. I've just been fortunate it hasn't quit while I'm in a driving situation that involves another vehicle in the position to crash into me as I'm restarting the engine. There is not a particular situation I can point to where it does this more. The engine has less than 120k miles and maintence is routine. Obd by certified mechanics has not shown any defective readings. I've also check on-line and found it's not just my vehicle, but others in different years are doing the same thing. There's nothing on the Ford website that addresses this issue.

Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The contact stated that while driving 15 mph on the sand in a beach area that there was a failure of which a strong burning odor started, excess heat was felt by the driver, front passenger and 3 rear passengers. The vehicle was pulled over as they exited the vehicle. Upon inspecting the vehicle, it was noticed that there was a small fire near the transmission area, fluid had leaked onto the catalytic converter as the fire progressed to destroying the vehicle with the fire becoming extensive which had errupted all the way to the fuel system to the fuel tank. The fire department had arrived and extinguished the remaining flames. The insurance company had not rendered any assistance to inspect the cause of the fire. A dealer had not diagnosed the cause of the fire yet. The vehicle was destroyed due to the internal failure resulting in a catastrophic fire. The manufacturer was notified of the failure to determine if they may be able to investigate the cause of the fire. The approximate failure mileage was 81,000. Dyd.

Car takes about 3 to 5 tries to start. I replaced gas pump, plugs, cables, temp sensor, still takes long to start. O/d off light started flashing, and now it has a rough gear change I believe from 2nd to 3rd.

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The contact stated that the vehicle randomly failed to start upon turning the key numerous times. The dealer (pegues-hurst Ford, 200 TX-63 spur, longview, TX 75601, (903) 758-6211) was contacted and indicated that they would need to determine if they could replicate and diagnose the failure. The contact was advised to schedule an appointment with the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer issued 12 technical service bulletins (tsbs) for the electrical system, 52 tsbs for the engine, and 3 tsbs for the fuel system gasoline, but the contact was uncertain as to which part caused the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. While at a stop light with the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle accelerated independently. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body and motor assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 61,130.
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The contact was driving with the vehicle speed control engaged at 68 mph when the failure occurred. The vehicle began to decelerate and some smoke was present underneath the vehicle. When the contact opened the hood there was no evidence of smoke in the engine area. The contact was concerned about the housing unit being cracked other than for being defective, cold temperature or high heat that comes in contact with it. The housing unit should never split apart. The thermostat housing unit was leaking. The over drive warning light illuminated prior to the failure. The contact was forced to drive the vehicle onto the emergency lane. The vehicle would drive forward or in reverse and it also failed to function in first gear. The vehicle would only move forward in second gear. The contact was able to continue driving five miles in second gear to his residence at 35 mph. After the failure occurred the contact also added anti freeze to the vehicle. The transmission also failed shortly after the failure occurred and he was unable to drive in reverse gear. The mechanic stated that the bands in the transmission may have caused the failure to occur. A local mechanic replaced the thermostat housing unit which has three hoses attached to it. Ford was currently checking the transmission to determine the cause of failure. The failure mileage was 96,600. The current mileage was 96,620.

My engine went out after only 140000 miles on it with no warning. I know several people that own a 2003 Ford explorer and there engine went out after only with 100000 miles on it. It cost me over 3200. 00 for it to be repaired.
On Sunday the night before the incident the vehicle was used that day. In the afternoon around 3 pm it was taken to get gassed up for the work week. The next morning was chilly and it was started to warm the vehicle up. However, the vehicle didn't start at all. The dash lights, interior-exterior lights all have power to include power locks and windows. The battery tested good, the starter and solenoid tested good. The wire to the solenoid from the battery has power. The vehicle had not shown signs of faulty starting. Two to 3 times before this incident none of the lights would work but then miraculously work again. When the lights would work I'm mean the headlights, left and right turn signal, etc. It seemed the one way to get them to work again would be to adjust the steering wheel but that didn't always work. Why is this vehicle not starting when the day before is was working just fine and had not given any signs of failure?.
Stopped to get fuel and truck would not start. Engine would turn over, but would not start. I had vehicle towed to the Ford dealership. Told by the Ford service manager that it was the fuel control module located by the rear spare tire and they have replaced many of them. The Ford dealership confirmed it and replaced the fuel control module. My cost $386. 93. We had purchased a extended motor vehicle service agreement (national protection plan, inc. ) from capital Ford in madison, WI. We were told when we purchased the policy it was a bumper to bumper and the company will not stand behind policy.

The fuel gauge in my 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac stopped working recently. The engine light stays on as well. I wasn't sure how much gas was in the truck so I filled it up and the engine light went off. After driving for several days, I noticed my fuel gauge was still sitting on "f" which I know wasn't right, eventually the fuel gauge came down some and the engine light came back on and has stayed on since. I have about 67k on it now. I've really enjoyed this vehicle and have always maintained it's checkups. I'm taking it tomorrow to see what it will cost to fix. I don't like driving around and not knowing how much gas I have or the fact that the engine light remains on. I don't know if its on because the gauge is broke or because something else could be going on with the engine. Either way, I'm sure it's going to cost alot, what vehicle maintenance doesn't. I've read a lot of complaints about this on line and am surprised nothing has been mentioned about this by Ford; but then again, why would Ford want to fix something themselves when they can charge the customer an arm and a leg instead!!!!.
Without any indication why, the temperature indicator began to rise and the engine became rather loud. No indicator (idiot lights) lights came on at all. Pulled over to check the engine, left the engine running and the heat indicator returned to normal immediately. Started to drive and the same issue started again. This time I pulled over and shut the engine down completely. Restarted the engine 2~3 mins later, which appears to have re-set the system, as I have not have a similar problem since.
As cited by other readers, Ford has placed ht-1 ceramic plugs in the explorer series which are very expensive. These plugs constantly develop stress cracks and break during replacement, requiring a special tool to remove them. When they break (2~3 on average), be ready to pay additional charges to cover the extra time needed for removal/clean-out by the mechanic. Something needs to be done by Ford to replace these plugs.
Spark plugs may be contributing to a skip under load. However, Ford has used some unusual spark plug that is a serious problem for end users to either change themselves or extraordinarily expensive for the consumer to have changed by Ford. Ford service quote is $300. 00 to have changed. This is a terrible design and engineering screw up that is ridiculous. Ford needs to step up and admit they have a poor design and not keep charging customers for their mistake.
Faulty cylinder head causing a thrown spark plug, and a broken coil pack.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an automotive repair shop where a mechanic performed a diagnostic test and detected a malfunction in the emissions control system. The manufacturer had issued a voluntary recall for the emissions control system however, the contact’s vehicle was not included in the recall campaign. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 161,673.

I was going back home to miami and my car 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac caught on fire at the exit of the midtown tunnel in new york city. The fire started in the front motor at the passenger side. The police used 3 fire extinguishers but all the effort they did was not enough. My car was completely on fire. The motor, the seats , all the interior was completely destroy by the fire. The fireman arrived after a few minutes, but it was to late. I bought this car cash brand new from sawgrass Ford in ft lauderdale florida. I did not have full cover and I lost every thing. . I was in new york with my family and with no car to go back home. . I called Ford and they told me that they are not responsible for anything that happen to that car. I am sure this is not fair to me or to anybody. The car was a 2003 and only had about 46,000 miles.
