Failure Date: 03/11/2023

I have a 22 f150 lightning lariat with a tailgate light bar that is taking on water. As of now the lights are flickering and burning out. The water may be shorting out the lights and could be a safety issue. I have read on lightning forum sights about other owners with the same issues.

2 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2018 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 03/19/2021

I took my truck to the Ford dealership I purchased it from because the tail lights stopped working. The service manager informed me that water was in both tail lights and had to be replaced for $3,000. My truck is a 2018, has only 18,000 miles and well taken care of and no accidents. The service claimed the water got in because of damage to the tail light. The marks he pointed out on the tail lights were very light scuff marks and could not allow water to get inside. They would not cover the replacement because of the scuff marks. I went on a Ford forum and found that there had been plenty of other 2018 (and other years) that had water in their tail lights as well. The trucks that were out of warranty just remove the tail light, drained the water, applied silicon around the seems of the tail light and had no issues since then. I've attached pictures. You'll see that there is no way water could have enter where you see scuff marks like the service manager claims. The pictures are the left and right tail lights. . Read more...

6 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/15/2017

Purchased used 2016 F-150 in oct 2017. Shortly after purchase tailgate would randomly open while vehicle was in motion. Power tailgate would also open when key fob was used to lock vehicle. Tail lights would also illuminate brightly as if brakes were applied when they were not when vehicle was in motion. Other times tail lights would flicker on and off when vehicle was in motion. When computer was scanned no trouble codes were found. Eventually after several trips to BMW dealership in spokane wa where vehicle was purchased vehicle was taken to wendle Ford in spokane wa. At wendle Ford technicians found extremely frayed wiring harness in area at rear of truck where bed and frame meet. Wendle tech's said that they had never seen this type of damage / defect before, and when checking with Ford corporate there were no service bulletins reference this type of problem. This description of events was prompted after reading a news report of Ford super duty trucks exhibiting tail gate openings while vehicle in motion. All service notes and documentation can be obtained through wendle Ford, spokane wa.

13 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2012 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/13/2013

While driving at highway speed, I heard a pop and 'ding' sound before losing all electrical items - dash board, head lights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, etc. , but the engine was still operating. I then felt a grinding noise and immediately exited the highway safely to park at a gas station. I turned off and removed the key but the engine was still running. I was only a few miles from a Ford dealership. I inserted the key, turned it to the on position and tried to put the truck into gear while depressing the brake. The transmission brake release would not work. I called roadside assistance who scheduled a tow to the dealership. I had to call the dealership to figure out how to turn the engine off. They advised that I should pull the fuel pump relay fuse which did stop the engine. To date, Ford does not know what is wrong.

17 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/08/2011

I rented a Ford pickup truck from u-haul, and I feel that the automatic lighting controls on it are a safety issue. At night, when you open the driver's door, the dashboard illumination (speedometer, other gauges) comes on automatically. When you put in the key and start the engine, the daytime running lights (white lights on the front of the truck that are not as intense as the normal low-beam headlamps) come on. The dashboard illumination remains on at all times. Rear red running lamps/tail lamps do not illuminate*, but this is not obvious when you are in the driver's seat. The result is that it is possible to drive at night with some white light coming out of the front of the vehicle, and the ability to read the speedometer, but with rear lighting*. I verified that the parking/emergency brake was fully off (as that is sometimes an input to the drls), and had a friend stand on the side of the street and observe as I drove the truck, and he verified that I had no running lights/tail lights on the back. The brake lamps operated normally when I stepped on the brake, but there was no red light to the rear unless I was stepping on the brake. All of the above was with the headlight switch off. When I clicked the headlight switch to the first position, the running lights illuminated (orange on the front near the headlamps, red in the rear lamp clusters. ) when I clicked it to the second position, the normal low beams came on at full intensity. What I think should be different: either the automatic lights/drls should also turn on the tail lights at night, or there should be some indication to the driver that he needs to take additional action (operate the headlight switch) in order to have tail lights. Having the speedometer illumination go out when the engine is started might be a good choice.

18 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 07/19/2011

Have been having electrical issues including failing backup camera at night and tail lights not working (dangerous at night) as well as fuses blowing. Dealer could not duplicate but dealer states there is corrosion in the fuse panel because water entered the vehicle. There are several instances where Ford is aware of this issue where water is entering the vehicle on the dot. Gov and other websites. They are refusing to do anything about it. Please do something about this, Ford knows there is an issue and there is no reason for them do get away with issues that may cause fatal car accidents including tail lights going out while driving.
