Ford F-150 owners have reported 52 problems related to tailgate (under the structure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford F-150 based on all problems reported for the F-150.
The vehicle is stationary and when the passenger door is unlocked with the key fob the tailgate fails down. When the driver exits the vehicle the tailgate falls down. By falls down I mean the tailgate on the pickup is closed and in the vertical position and the only way to open the tailgate is with the key fob. The tailgate fob is depressed and the tailgate opens (falls down) automatically. Only the tailgate controls are incorrectly opening the tailgate when the passenger door is opened with the key fob or when you get in the back doors. Also after driving the truck when opening the drivers door the tailgate drops down. If a child or adult happens to be behind the truck the can get hurt.

The rear tailgate opened up twice, once while driving down the highway and the second time pulling into a parking lot. This was during the winter time. I sprayed some wd40 on the rear latches thinking that would help but did not. I realized the left side latch was not engaging all the way. I could pull on the top left side tailgate and it was loose. So I would have to slam the tailgate until it engaged. I took my truck into the dealer to look at, along with two other recall issues. On my invoice they stated they 'adjusted tail gate strikers and retest operation', in time I'll see if this worked or not. Wondering if anyone else was having this same issue?.

Purchased used 2016 F-150 in oct 2017. Shortly after purchase tailgate would randomly open while vehicle was in motion. Power tailgate would also open when key fob was used to lock vehicle. Tail lights would also illuminate brightly as if brakes were applied when they were not when vehicle was in motion. Other times tail lights would flicker on and off when vehicle was in motion. When computer was scanned no trouble codes were found. Eventually after several trips to BMW dealership in spokane wa where vehicle was purchased vehicle was taken to wendle Ford in spokane wa. At wendle Ford technicians found extremely frayed wiring harness in area at rear of truck where bed and frame meet. Wendle tech's said that they had never seen this type of damage / defect before, and when checking with Ford corporate there were no service bulletins reference this type of problem. This description of events was prompted after reading a news report of Ford super duty trucks exhibiting tail gate openings while vehicle in motion. All service notes and documentation can be obtained through wendle Ford, spokane wa.
My vehicle is a 2017 f150 lariet pickup truck, the vehicle is equipt with an electronic tailgate release. The tail gate has opened on me on at least a dozen occasions. While the vehicle is in motion. The vehicle has been back to the dealer with no satifaction the dealership had no anwer how to correct this and that there where other complaints and that there was an indicator light on previous model years and it is stated in the owners manual and. There is no why to disable the tailgate lock and there is no indicator light on the dashboard that the gate is open. This is a dangerous and unnerving problem that the Ford motor company needs to be mandated to correct. Before an unsuspecting driver is hurt or killed from cargo flying out of the bed of this vehicle. There is again no way to lock the tailgate. . .

2005 Ford f150, only 85,000 miles on the vehicle. The overall exterior body of truck has zero rust and is in excellent condition. However, the main "frame" of the truck, which supports all the weight and structure of the truck is rusted through. I live in wisconsin and have owned many Fords, and other trucks. Never have I had a frame of a truck rust out like this. These truck should last 200,000 miles +, and I have done just that on previous vehicles. However, with the body having zero rust, it is out of the norm to see this frame rusted through with holes in the main structure of the frame. I was advised by multiple auto shops this can not be weld repaired due to safety standards. Further, in order to fix the issue and make the vehicle safe, the entire frame must be replaced. Being this truck only has 85,000 miles on it, I find it absurd that this is even an issue. As previously mentioned, I have never seen this sort of corrosion on the under body, and yet the quarter panels, tailgate, bumper are all zero rust. It is evident that there is a metallurgical defect in the steel used for this frame. I have read numerous postings by others owning the 2005 model and many have experienced the same issue. Frame rusting out before it even hits 100,000 miles, and these are daily drivers. As of now, this vehicle is deemed unsafe by the local Ford dealer, and even the master technician on site was perplexed by the undercarriage corroding as it had, when the vehicle is otherwise "clean" inside and out, with no rust.

Tailgate cables do not evenly support the tailgate. Tailgate over time will become"racked out of square" resulting in difficulties opening the tailgate. This has occurred in my previous F-150.
2015 F-150 lariat supercrew cab door locks and tail gate become frozen in cold weather. This has been happening more often lately with cold temps in michigan winter. Got up this morning with my kids to take them to school, got them in the car and the door would not stay closed (rear passenger). Checked the latches, the mechanics seemed to be working (handle, etc. ) but I could not get the door to stay closed. Happens on the doors (all 4) and the tailgate (tailgate would not open).

Vehicle has been into dealer multiple times for issues with door and tailgate mechanisms freezing and becoming inoperable in temperatures under 32 degrees. Doors will freeze and lock me out of the vehicle -or- the doors will open but not latch shut upon closing. Ford has issued a recall for this widely-known issue, but my vehicle's VIN is not included. The dealer has been great at experimenting with various part replacements, but they have received limited guidance from Ford in order to solve this problem for good.
Doors and tailgate fail to lock and unlock in cold weather. Making it impossible to get in or out of truck in an emergency.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the tailgate slightly detached from the vehicle on its own. The failure damaged the wiring cable on the rear of the vehicle. The dealer diagnosed that the computer wires that were damaged needed to be replaced first in order to properly diagnose the tailgate failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but the contact had not received a response. The approximate failure mileage was 21,000.
Bought f150 in fall of 2015, first few days of cold weather my back passengers doors would not close. They just kept bouncing back at me. Did that a few times didn't think that much about it. Next fall season of 2016 I haven't been able to open my rear doors on my 55,000 vehicle for the past 4 months. Now my tailgate won't open up either! what a joke. Took it to Ford dealer and told me it would be at least 1 month before parts would come in there on back order! so Ford knows about the problem but won't do anything about it. Salesman offered me some rope to tie the doors shut so they wouldn't open up!!!!!!!! how about that for a safety concern. $55,000 vehicle and they offer me rope to keep my doors closed. I can't put me kids on the truck can't use my vehicle for ways I intended for the past 5 months yet I keep paying my payments of this. What a joke. Just tried to open my tailgate yesterday and the lock mechanism isn't even triggering the lock in the tailgate, its seized up can't use that now either. Someone needs to do something about this.
Dash electrical relay issue, paint peeling tailgate, transmission shutter going into overdrive 45 mph.
2000 Ford F-150. Consumer states wheel rims started to rust out in one year
the consumer also stated the bumper rusted out in one year, and the abs light illuminated. The brakes were inspected several times, but no problem was found. The high beams would not come on, the plastic on the outside rearview mirror fell off, the dome light in the cab wouldn't come on, and the tailgate wouldn't close, the windshield wiper washer, wipers and heating system did not work. The power steering pump leaked all the time, the gear shifter wouldn't go into park. The fuel strap failed three years ago and caused the fuel tank to fall to the ground.

2001 Ford F-150: paint is peeling off the roof, hood, and tailgate areas. Two body shops advise that this is a known defect with the Ford painting processes used for this year vehicle. Also experiencing interior rusting problems. Ford advises that they will not remedy this problem. I am the original purchaser of this vehicle. Vehicle has been well maintained. I have never experienced paint issues like this with any other vehicle.

2005 Ford F-150 with <25k miles has paint spontaneously peeling off of the tailgate, hood and roof. The local dealership (who did not sell this truck) initially stated that there were problems with the paint job, in the metal itself and pretended to file a pictorial claim of the damages. Ford's "customer service" department denied the claim, stating that our request was to repaint areas that had scratches and dents. This is the furthest thing from the truth. "customer service" said that once a claim is reviewed they are done with it and there is no further recourse. In the meantime, we are stuck with a three-year old truck that is losing paint daily and beginning to rust.
: the contact stated the tailgate detached from the vehicle and was hanging by the cables. This occurred while driving over a bump at 10 mph, hauling a 300 pound couch. The dealership and manufacturer determined this was not a manufacturer's defect though they admitted that it was not the contact's fault. The contact felt that the tailgate was built extremely light, and it was spring loaded. Felt that the dealer should take responsibility and repair the vehicle.
While driving my 2004 Ford F-150 crew cab with the tailgate down @ 10mph I went over a small speed bump. The tailgate seperated from the truck. When I went to Ford dealer they said, "yeah, it shouldn't come off that easy" but they refuse to repair the vehicle. The dealer said to hold on because he felt he would see alot of this. The gate is spring loaded making it "bounce" when it is down.
