36 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2019

Driving south on I-95 just north of portland,me. Traveling with no load at 70 mph on dry pavement. Came across a bridge expansion joint which ran slightly diagonal to the direction of travel. The truck went into a violent death wobble. The entire vehicle was shuddering. I had all I could do to keep two hands on the wheel. The steering wheel was shaking left to right at a high oscillation. I had limited control of the vehicle and let of the accelerator and drifted toward the breakdown lane. At approximately 25 mph the oscillation stopped. Shortly thereafter the condition repeated. When I got home I went on line and discovered that this is a common problem. I have just over 50k miles on the truck. The dealer recommended that I replace the tires as they may be getting worn. I did follow that instruction although the tires still met the wear limits. I was also informed that Ford has issued a TSB # 18-2268 which I am going to have executed next week which looks into this problem and makes minor adjustment to the front end alignment. All that said, the problem is far greater than some tire wear and alignment adjustments. No vehicle shouls shake and ocillate you off of the road in a violent oscillation where the driver loses their ability to control the vehicle. Ford has a far more serious design issue with these trucks. As they do not acknowlege the problem and offer a true fix (at their cost) the owner of these vehicles is playing a game of russian roulette until the vehicle goes back into the violent oscillation. After reading many on-line posts, this appears to be happening at all different mileage levels. Ford needs to be investigated for this problem. The customer and their family should not be endangered for a defective front suspension.

37 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2019

Death wobble, while driving approximately 45 mph, I ran over some train tracks and the steering wheel started shaking violently. I had to slow down to almost a stop to get it to quit. Scared my wife half to death. Very dangerous.

38 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2019

When traveling at highway speeds (60+ mph) and you hit certain types of bumps the the road the steering wheel shakes violently after the bump. This has happened four times in the last month. It appears to only happen over a road imperfection where the two front wheels hit it independently ie a skewed angle bridge joint or a single pot hole. At the dealers instruction I have rotated and balanced tires, checked tire inflation. The truck has 20,000 miles on it now and this first happened at 17,000 miles. My research tells me that this problem is commonly called "death wobble" which it appears Ford has issued a technical service bulletin for. I am going to try another dealer and give them the info I have.

39 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2019

The trucks steering wheel shakes violently at highway speeds. You have to hold on and reduce speeds to almost a stop to get it to stop. It is the scariest thing I have ever encountered with a vehicle in over forty years of driving. Ford is well aware of the problem. I'm concerned that you all are silent. If your agency continues to ignore this you all should just closedown and find something else to do.

40 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2018

At speeds around 70 mph, when a series of bumps are driven over the truck begins to shake violently and continues until the speed drops to around 20 mph. When it happened to my wife it shook so badly she crossed centerline and was in the opposing traffic lane. The steering wheel shakes violently as well. This is the second time it has happened and this is a nearly new truck. From searching the internet it appears this is a problem that has been brought to Ford's attention and is called the"Ford death wobble". If not fixed we will not be able to keep the truck it is so dangerous.

41 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2018

Front end steering begins a death wobble at speeds over 40 mph. If even the slightest bump in the road, city or highway, is driven over at these speeds it makes the steering wheel shake violently from side to side.

42 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2018

While driving, if the vehicle hits a bump the front end and steering wheel will shake violently back and forth and side to side causing instability and making the vehicle hard to control until the vehicles speed is dramatically decreased or in some instances stopped completely on the side of the road. This has happened numerous timeson the highway traveling at speeds around 70 mph as well as when traveling on city streets at a lower rate of speed.

43 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2018

2017 Ford f250 supercrew diesel. Driving 40mph or faster on highway and run over any type of uneven surface truck shakes and steering wheel vibrates uncontrollably! it first happened when I was hauling my horses and I thought I was going to wreck with trailer in tow! I bought this truck brand new and have never been off roading or anything crazy that should ever make the suspension do that kind of shaking! it was horrific! please issue a recall and fix this problem!.

44 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2018

Death wobble. Happens at many different speeds and different highways. Steering wheel shakes violently. Truck is stock with stock wheels and tires.

45 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2018

While driving on a clear dry highway at about 60mph, I hit a small bump and the steering wheel began to shake violently, the truck drifted across two lanes before I could get slowed down to 30mph when the shaking stopped. I pulled off, checked the truck as best I could thinking something had come loose. Nothing found, I went to a gas station and verified tire pressure was correct. Continued on, the next day at the same spot on the way to work it happened again. This time I took it straight to the dealership. They diagnosed a failed steering shock this is a 2017 f250 with only 25k miles this was terrifying and someone must make Ford fixthis permamently.

46 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2018

While driving around 70+ mph and moving over small bumps in the road whether be a bridge transition or small pot hole steering wheel shakes violently only goes away after slowing down to below 60.

47 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

Truck front end and steering wheel shakes violently after hitting a bump going 70 mph.

48 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2018

While passing a slower vehicle , I hit a small bump in the road which caused the steering wheel to shake violently (death shake) almost losing control of truck. I had to move back over into my lane before I should of and pull off onto the narrow shoulder which caused about 6 vehicles behind me to swerve to miss me. After slowing to about 20 mph the shake went away. I continued on driving till I was able to pull off into a safe area to inspect for a cause, but did not see anything loose or abnormal in any steering or suspension components. Fortunately I wasn't towing my camper at the time, otherwise I may not have been here to submit this report.

49 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

On two separate occasions, our Ford F-250 started to violently shake in the front end after going onto an overpass on the highway. This is a violent wobble of the front end. It feels like the entire front suspension is going to self destruct. This happened one time at a speed of 65 mph and another time at a speed of 75 mph. In order to get the front end shaking to stop, the vehicle had to be slowed down to approximately 35 mph. During both episodes, the steering wheel was violently shaking and it felt like the front tires were wobbling. The first time this happened, it was so violent that the front windshield cracked. The first episode occurred with approximately 21,000 miles on the vehicle. After that episode, we took the truck into the Ford dealership and they replaced some parts in the front suspension and indicated it was fixed. The second episode occurred with about 29,000 miles on the vehicle. We again took the vehicle into the Ford dealership and they changed the caster setting on the vehicle to an out of spec condition and told us that the Ford regional service rep told them that would fix the problem. After getting the vehicle back from that service visit, there was a vibration in the steering at speeds between 72 mph and 76 mph. The steering wheel would vibrate back and forth at a relatively high speed. The vehicle is at the dealership for a third time to address this newest problem. The vehicle now has right at 36,000 miles on it and is at the end of the warranty mileage. The first instance was approx October 1, 2018 and the second instance was approx March 1, 2019.

50 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

Steering wheel shakes violently sometimes when traveling at highway speeds and driving over potholes or expansion joints in the highway. Has occurred on 3 separate occasions. This is a safety concern and the vehicle is not safe. I've taken it in for repair twice with no fix. It's in the dealership for repairs a third time right now.

51 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2018

On 4 seperate occasions, while driving at approximately 55-65 mph on a highway, driving straight, the steering wheel began shaking violently causing loss of steering and control of the truck. Slowing down to 15-20 mph while applying the brakes got the shaking to stop. The vibration is akin to the death wobble. While I did not crash the truck, if there had been a vehicle in the lane next to me on any of the incidents, an accident would have occurred because the truck veered into the lane next to me. The truck is at the dealer for repair. I was told by the service advisor that this is a common problem. The truck has 20k miles on it currently. The first time it happened, the truck had about 16k miles.

52 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2018

Steering wheel is shaking violently while driving my truck started at 25000 miles.

53 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2018

I was pulling a camper down a state highway and hit a place in the road where they repaired a culvert and the steering wheel started shaking violently, I almost lost control before I got slowed down enough to get it to stop. I was only traveling at 55 mph. Since then this has happened around 10 times doesn't matter if I'm loaded or not when I hit rough patches in road or bridge transition. It about takes steering wheel out of my had it's shaking so bad, took to deelership and they said they fixed it but it continues to do it and they say they can't get it to happen with them so they really can't do nothing about it. It's hit or miss when it does it but when it happens you can't control it it's like the wheel is shaking so hard it's locked and won't let you steer the truck to keep it from running off into ditch. The truck only has 24600 miles but it's been doing it since around 7000 miles. Will continue to take it to them till it gets fixed before I have a wreck.

54 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2018

Driving at highway speed between 60-70 or 80 mph, the truck develops violent steering wheel shake, back and forth, whole truck vibrates, tires seem to be shaking from one side to the other ( death wobble). This happens when the truck goes over an uneven road, bump, hole or defect in the road. Happens without warning, with or without towing but happens more frequently when towing travel trailer. Shaking will not stop until truck is brought to almost a complete stop. Very scary.

55 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2017

At steady speeds of 45 mph and over the front end of the truck will violently shake after travelling over a pothole, or expansion joint, or other imperfection in the pavement surface. Ford is aware of this. This condition has come to be known as death wobble. The steering wheel will shake in my hands and becomes very anxiety provoking and eliminates my confidence that I can control the truck. The only cure once this condition starts is to slow down to the point that the steering wheel shake smooths out. I bought this truck new, and this condition has existed since day one. Ford claims there is no fix. This is unacceptable in any vehicle at any price.
