Clutch problems of the 1999 Ford F-350

22 problems related to clutch have been reported for the 1999 Ford F-350. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Clutch problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2007

(1) driving my 1999 Ford F-350 super duty diesel home from work. (2) I pushed in the clutch pedal to shift down, the clutch failed to release and the pedal stuck to the floor. I ended up in the middle of an intersection avoiding a collision. The truck is undriveable, blocking traffic, and required towing. (3) the clutch release for had cracked and bent also causing a failure of the clutch hydraulic circuit. Replacement of the release fork and hydraulic circuit restored the truck to operation condition. The part number of the new clutch release fork was different than that of the one removed, leading me to suspect a problem with the stock release fork. Original release fork part number f61a-7515-be. New installed release fork part number yc3z-7515-bb. I have retained the old release fork at my home address.

4 Clutch problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2002

Consumer has difficulty getting the transmission into gear and when shifting, when the transmission does shift gears, there is a grinding noise, the free play in the clutch is always different, sometimes the clutch would engage when the clutch pedal was near the top , other times the clutch would engage when the clutch pedal was pushed all the way. The consumer was informed that there was a 6 inch piece of rubber hydraulic hose in the hydraulic line of the clutch assembly, so when the vehicle was warmed up, it expanded instead of staying ridged. Ford is aware of the problem and updated the clutch assembly, however, the consumer was told that problem is considered a wear item.

5 Clutch problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2002

Low clutch engagement causing the clutch to release with pedal against down stop or not to release at all. Had truck towed for safety reasons. When the clutch doesn't release this could cause an accident and failure to be able to stop vehicle when clutch goes all the way to the floor and not disengage clutch.

6 Clutch problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2002

While clutch is fulley depressed and in gear vehicle will take off. Contacted dealer. Replaced part, but problem reoccurred.

7 Clutch problem

Failure Date: 08/31/2001

Whenever driving at various speeds clutch would go out. Would have no prior warning. Had taken to dealership at least 4 times, and clutch has been changed 4 times. There isn't any indication of cause of problem. It still exists.

8 Clutch problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2001

Clutch hydraulic release system failed catastrophically, causing vehicle to jump forward immediately and violently. Fortunately the car in front of me was far enough away so that I didn't hit it, before getting vehicle stopped. On investigation, I found that the roll pin which holds the clutch line into the slave cylinder had backed out, and allowed the high pressure line to disconnect. When this happened, the clutch engaged violently, and the vehicle lurched forward on engine power. This could have caused a major accident, if any of the circumstances had been different.

9 Clutch problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2000

The plastic retainer located where the clutch pedal engages the rod for the clutch master cylinder wears out allowing the rod to disengage the pedal assembly without any notice of inpending failure. This happened to me in a crowded parking lot at the canton trade days. Luckily I was in 1st gear and was able to idle to a parking space without hitting anyone or anything. Once the pedals comes loose and the engine is stopped it cannot be restared without the pedal assemble being in place. This problem can be avoided by returning back to the old style ball and socket set up used on older vehicles and doing away with the plactic pieces in the setup. Had I been behind someone or been in a downtown driving situation where a pedestrian been in front of me such as a stop light when it decided to come loose the outcome may have been extremely serious.

10 Clutch problem

Failure Date: 10/25/1998

I am not the only Ford F-350 truck owner having these clutch problems. I have talked to several guys who have put 3 or more clutches replaced under 100,000 miles. There is definately a problem with these clutch assemblies. These trucks are sold as super-duty work trucks, but are not withstanding the workloads they are supposedly built for. I have contacted Ford several times with no satisfaction. I feel a recall should be in order.
