2 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 10/15/2017

Bought the vehicle used in may 2010. Realized early-on that the transmission was not smooth, but willing to settle for less than perfection since it was a 2005 vehicle. In late 2012 or early 2013, I received 'recall' notice that pcm (I. E. - powertrain control module) could need to be reprogrammed due to stalling, herky-jerky transmission, etc. Took car to dealership, they ran diagnostics, charged me $100, and told me that my car wasn't effected because no error codes were noted and check engine light wasn't on. I was not happy, and refused to take my car to the dealership for repair. Problem persisted, until check engine light came on in October 2017 at roughly 125,000 miles. Took to local mechanic, was charged $150 for sensor replacement. Light came back on a day later. Took back, replaced sensor for free (nice!), but light back on a day later. Took to a different mechanic, was charged $250, replaced multiple sensors, light back on the next day. Took back to 2nd mechanic, when they shared with me that it was likely the pcm and the dealership would need to fix. Called dealership 3 days in a row, on hold for nearly an hour the 3rd time, was never connected to a service writer or tech, left 3 voice mails for service manager and was never called back. Researched issue and found NHTSA action number pe11018, where Ford initiated a customer satisfaction program 12n03 to extend coverage terms of repair of engine idle rpm surge caused by pcm needing reprogramming with software containing updated idle speed control. Per NHTSA, symptoms associated with the condition may include check engine light, diagnostic codes (dtcs) p0505, p0506, or p061b. Ford issued bulletin TSB 11-10-21 that included updated powertrain control calibration.

4 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 08/21/2014

I was driving in town going about 40 mph when the car lost all power, then engine failsafe mode displayed on the information center and a little wrench was also displayed. With no power steering, I had to pull over quickly in lunchtime traffic. After stopping the car, I waited a few seconds and restarted it. No problems with it until the next day when the check engine light came on. I have also noticed a mechanical smell coming from the ac. It appeared, at first, that this problem had come out of nowhere when I suddenly remembered two occasions when the rpms suddenly stuck on 3000 and would not stop until I put the car in neutral. Also, when using cruise control, the whole car shakes and stutters slightly when going up or down very slight inclines.

6 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 05/05/2013

Approximately two months after service preformed under NHTSA campaign pe11018 the vehicle began to accelerate irregularly and then it placed itself into "fail safe" mode and illuminated the check engine light. Vehicle was returned to the Ford dealer that preformed the service and they determined that the electric throttle control was at fault but was not associated with the service they preformed on the same component just weeks earlier. Dealer contacted Ford motor CO and they also claimed the two were not related regardless of the similar claims found online.

Have a scheduled service call with Ford and have been issued a notice from Ford that this issue will be covered.

9 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/12/2012

My 2007 Ford Five Hundred sel fwd with the 3. 0 v-6 (81,421 miles) and 6 speed automatic transmission will intermittently surge forward or backwards without gas pedal application when idling in gear. It is as if I floored in a jackrabbit start. It does not do this every time that the car goes to idle in drive or reverse (for example, if I am in traffic at a stoplight) but it will do this at least once every time I drive. I have had to keep my right foot firmly on the brake pedal while backing or in a parking lot to keep the car from hitting pedestrians, other cars, sign poles in parking lots and my carport's wall. It will suddenly rev up when in either drive or reverse without my foot on the gas pedal and try to move in an uncontrolled manner. It may only do it once or it may do it three or four times in just as many seconds. I was unaware of this problem and nearly hit another car the first time this happened. There was no warning. No check engine light activated. My car is equipped with a tachometer, I have seen it jump as high as 2000 rpm from a 750 rpm idle and then fall right back to 750. The fact that I have not hit anyone yet is proof that this is not a pedal misapplication error, but my concern is that an inexperienced driver or someone who is unaware of this defect will be surprised by it and kill or injure themselves or someone else. This is the first time I have ever owned a vehicle with such a problem I took my car to my local Ford dealer and was told that the problem is a defective throttle body which is being replaced tomorrow. I researched this problem on the internet and have found reports that the replacement part is no better than the original. The fact that a defective part can cause a vehicle to act in such a dangerous manner is symptomatic of a factory defect and should be acted upon by the NHTSA as soon as possible.

10 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 07/12/2011

While running the air conditioner, then either briefly shutting off engine or idling in park or neutral, once the car is shifted into drive gear the engine accelerates on its own, foot break is on. Rpms increase for 3-4 seconds then go back down to normal. The car was unable to lurch forward only because I've had my foot on the break due to my shifting of gears (from park or neutral to drive). The first time this happened I only had the break pedal slightly depressed - car jumped forward - I fully depressed brake pedal to stop. Occurs intermittently but intensity of surge increasing. Yesterday had a much stronger surge in drive-thru, then car stalled. Was able to restart, engine light has remained on since yesterday's incident. Top motor mount damper (round rubber disk) is cracked thru as well, probably due to lurching.

11 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 04/24/2011

I have a 2005 Ford Five Hundred with 68k miles. I was leaving a rest area and accelerating onto the interstate. My car shuddered and had no power. I noticed the engine fail safe mode light. I went to the shoulder and stopped the car. I waited a minute and restarted the car. My check engine light came on. This is repeat of symptoms I had two weeks ago. The Ford dealer replaced the thottle body assembly two weeks ago. At that time, I was in line at my grandson's school. Same symptoms except that the car shuddered and then accelerated. Fortunately, I had my foot on the brake. Over the last six months, I have had repeated engine fail safe modes, but have always reset when I turn off the car and wait a few minutes. Ford has a safety issue with this throttle body assembly. Mine has been replaced twice. Car is in the shop for the third time for the same problem.
