Was driving my 2005 Five Hundred today. I pulled off the highway and stopped at a red light. When the light turned green I had hardly any power. No power steering, all gauges at home and a message say "engine failsafe mode". I turned the car off and restarted with no problems. I've read on different sites where people have had this same issue of the throttle sticking open and the car lunging forward or back nearly causing a wreck.

I purchased a 2005 Ford 500 in 2010 from freeway Ford in bloomington, mn. The first incident that I had was when my boyfriend was driving at speeds of 70 mph when all the sudden my vehicle went into engine fail safe mode and lost acceleration. With speeds of 70 mph and 5 lanes of traffic we are lucky that nothing worse followed. This problem would come up again at random times. A more recent incident was I took my vehicle to the dealership to have them clean the throttle body and reset the module. Since that was taken care of my car has now worsened. It has gone into fail safe mode 5 times in one month. My car will not accelerate normal and when I start it there are times where my rpm are running higher than normal.
I filled this in already. The consumer stated he experienced an engine fail safe mode problem. Updated 01/28/11.
No specific events leaning to failure, intermittent. The failure occurred intermittently over the last few weeks, while driving car goes into the engine fail safe mode, trying to drive the car is rather dangerous, car stalls, won't go, then suddenly takes off. Took car to dealership told, throttle body bad and the part is back ordered (the #3 most back ordered part out of 500).
Rough acceleration from stop for years. After 218,000 miles engine shuts off reporting engine fail-safe mode. Will restart after sitting on side of road for couple, 5-minutes. Dealer states bad throttle body - $900. 00 repair. Apparently a common problem.
Consumer said that the engine failed and caused a safety problem. The vehicle lost power when pressing the accelerator. This happened for a month but has been intermittent. The engine felt like it was skipping. The speed that the vehicle was traveling was not a factor nor were the road conditions. The consumer took vehicle to dealership twice but the problem recurred. The manufacturer has not been contacted. The dealership suggested that the problem could be a computer related issue. The owner had the black box installed in the vehicle and turned it over to the dealership this morning. The problem has still not been resolved. Owner is taking the vehicle back to dealer next week for additional testing.
