1 Power Train problem of the 2011 Ford Flex

Failure Date: 10/17/2025

My brakes locked up suddenly on the rear end causing me to get stuck in the middle of the road and unable to move it, even to tow it. I had to take 2 days almost to fix it in the middle of the road, since yesterday morning. They also began locking up suddenly on the front end, the wheel bearing, cv joint, tie rods, cv axles, cv boots, and sway bars began failing out of nowhere as well. The brakes may or may not be able to be replicated, as they are partially fixed and yes my entire front end can be replicated. The danger is my brakes locked up as I was driving, in the middle of the road at that. I have not been able to get the front end fixed as it is expensive, however the danger of this is the tires falling off or the front end failing all together. All of the other people who drive these that I have talked to and met have had the same problem and yes they are factory parts! even the people who have only 30 to 60000 miles on their 2011 Ford Flex titaniums have these issues! not only this but also the sensors go bad almost immediately off the lot, which can cause the car to brake without warning, stop running out of nowhere, make the power steering module fail, make your vehicle stutter because all of the sensors are bad. These vehicles need to be recalled and fixed, or recalled and replaced with better vehicles (from $60,000 up to $95,000) with any mileage any year. Please recall these and please help! I just got mine, this isn't right!.

9 Power Train problem of the 2014 Ford Flex

Failure Date: 08/15/2023

2014 Ford Flex awd with 122,032 miles. Tried to get on interstate and when I got to 55mph heard a loud bang and smoke rolling from underneath car. Pulled over to find that the front differential had blown it's seals and gear lube sprayed everywhere. Car has been gently driven 25,000 in last 4 years with only other issues. Rear hatch drive motor. Blend door actuators and strut mounts. Which all happened at 110,254 miles. Great car but now $3100 for a major part defect that is from Ford itself. Maintenance schedule in owners manual says an I quote. "do not add fluid or change no need to check guaranteed for life" why is it there is the same recall for it but my VIN is not included. Makes no sense. Been regularly maintained even before intervals. No warning no sign. Just boom.

10 Power Train problem of the 2016 Ford Flex

Failure Date: 05/26/2023

The power transfer unit otherwise referred to as a transfer case exploded from the inside with under 50k miles on the Flex resulting in the transmission cracking and breaking as well. Aaa inspected and replaced both transmission and transfer case. They say they see a lot of them for these models and is a common issue. We kept old transfer case as proof. Car is not used for towing as it has no hitch and as stated before had under 50000 miles when it destroyed itself with myself and kids in the car driving 45 mph.

Wrench light came on and car felt like it was losing power and began to shake. I pulled over and it went dead.

15 Power Train problem of the 2013 Ford Flex

Failure Date: 06/29/2022

Ever since I purchased this vehicle, the power steering would stop working, warning lights: power train and another one would appear after it happens. I would shut my vehicle off and restart it, which would clear the issue and I would have no problems. This has happened several times, sometimes 2-3 times a week. However, two weeks ago, the power steering stopped altogether working and will not clear, even with restarting the vehicle.

16 Power Train problem of the 2017 Ford Flex

Failure Date: 05/14/2022

Awd indicator states off while driving at times without warning. Also leaking sludge. Now need to replace ptu and Ford awd vehicles are known for this issue. . . Needs to be recalled as system can fail and explode. . This is supposed last the lifetime of the vehicle and is not set up for maintenance causing the system to fail. I am replacing with a unit that can be serviced every 30k miles. This is a safety issue.

17 Power Train problem of the 2011 Ford Flex

Failure Date: 04/10/2022

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Flex. The contact stated that upon her husband starting the vehicle, the vehicle entered limp mode as he exited the driveway. Her husband then drove the vehicle back into the driveway and turned the vehicle off. The next day, her husband started that vehicle and was temporarily able to resume normal driving; however, the vehicle entered limp mode while in traffic as the power train warning light illuminated. Her husband was able to coast the vehicle back home while in limp mode and had the vehicle towed to a dealer. The dealer initially diagnosed the vehicle with a defective throttle body; however, the failure persisted after the part was repaired. The contact made numerous trips back to the dealer; however, the failure persisted after each visit. The contact was then informed to take the vehicle back once the wrench light had illuminated. Once the wrench light illuminated, the contact began to drive the vehicle to the dealer. While driving, she heard an abnormal clunking sound coming from the vehicle as the check engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle entered limp mode. The contact made it to the dealer as antifreeze began leaking from the vehicle. The contact was then informed by the mechanic that the radiator fluid had begun to leak out of the vehicle as a result of the water pump, which was previously replaced. The mechanic also discovered that the radiator fluid had leaked out of the rear main seal of engine which caused engine failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided the contact with a case number. The vehicle remained at the dealer and was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 112,000.

18 Power Train problem of the 2009 Ford Flex

Failure Date: 05/14/2021

My Flex has repeatedly lost power while driving. I can feel the car lose power, and the yellow wrench light comes on. After reading up on it, I learned that you have to turn the vehicle off, wherever you are, and restart it after a few minutes. The wrench light turns off, and the car runs as normal, with no records of codes. This is talked about over and over in online forums. The safety issue is that it has happened on the freeway several times while traveling at a high rate of speed. The car loses power, and you cannot accelerate. You have to find a way to stop immediately, put the car in park (and listen to the transmission clunk) and turn it off. This last instance put me in harms way on the freeway. The car lost power while traveling 70mph. I immediately lost speed and had to cross 3 lanes of traffic to pull over to turn the car off. All of the forums talk about the throttle body, but everyone says that’s not the issue. The oss and tss sensors are also discussed. The dealerships cannot find out what’s wrong because once the car is turned off and restarted, any codes are erased. The issue persists, and the car keeps losing power wherever and whenever. I am referencing the most recent incident on this form, however, this has happened at least 12 times since September, 2020. Please, please force a recall on this issue!.

20 Power Train problem of the 2015 Ford Flex

Failure Date: 10/19/2020

When vehicle in motion on major roadway, loss of power and goes into limp mode. Yellow wrench lights up. Vehicle does not respond to throttle. I have to shut off vehicle and turn it back on . There is no dtc code when checked. I was almost rear ended with my children in the vehicle at time of incident. Car loses power and rapidly decelerates within 5 seconds. There is zero time to pull off the road which put us at high risk of being rear ended. This is a life/road safety hazard.

22 Power Train problem of the 2015 Ford Flex

Wrench light appears on dash and the car loses all power - known as "limp home" mode. Codes clear upon restart. Took it to dealer after freeway incident on 2/17/19, dealer found no codes, stated it was motor mount. Got the car back on 2/25/17, and it happened again within 30 miles. Was able to pull code with my own scan tool - p2111. Known error in throttle. This happened while traveling approximately 40 mph, and once on expressway, two additional times at around 20 mph.

Failure Date: 02/15/2019

Tl- the contact owns a 2014 Ford Flex. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the engine would crank, however, it would not start without warning. Due to the non start, the contact had the vehicle towed to pittsville Ford 7155 friendship rd, pittsville, MD 21850 (877) 760-5870 where once it was taken there, the vehicle started with no issues. Months later, the same failure occurred yet again without warning; the vehicle was towed back to the same dealer and the vehicle started up yet again without incident. When the failure occurred a third time, the contact disconnected the battery cable, waited a few moments, and the vehicle started without incident. When the failure occurred for the forth time, the same battery operation was not successful and the contact had to have the vehicle towed back to the same dealer. Upon investigation, the contact associated NHTSA campaign number: 16v621000(fuel system, gasoline) with her failure. The manufacturer had been notified of the failure where they verified that her vehicle was not under recall and that the vehicle was not under warranty; they offered no further assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000. Jo.

25 Power Train problem of the 2013 Ford Flex

Failure Date: 02/08/2019

There is currently an issue with our ecoboost v6 turbo charger. There is a old drain tube leak that has been identified through Ford and is a fire safety issue. This issue has been recalled for the 2014 and 2015 Ford Flex which is identical parts as our vehicle but never recalled. Would like to see this get recalled before harm is had. This is an ongoing leak that has gotten worse over time.

26 Power Train problem of the 2009 Ford Flex

Failure Date: 02/05/2019

This in reference to the transmission, I have had it looked at and no one can seem to narrow down the exact problem. The vehicle stalls while driving. After stopping and restarting the vehicle it hesitates and the kicks into gear and drives. This doesn't happen every day, but not knowing when the vehicle might stall is troublesome. There is TSB 11-12-10 that describes this problem, the Ford dealerships do not have any safety recalls in reference to this.

27 Power Train problem of the 2016 Ford Flex

Failure Date: 01/15/2019

Ecoboost 3. 5l vehicle experienced total loss of power and white smoke from tailpipes while driving 65mph on expressway but still ran. Drove straight to an independent service center where they diagnosed low boost pressure dtc and failure of both turbochargers. Towed vehicle to Ford service center where they dug deeper and are now telling me there was a coolant system leak which washed out the engine oil and caused the engine to overheat and the turbos to fail(lock up). There have been numerous documented issues with coolant system leaks and oil supply to turbos causing failures/fire/overheating in ecoboost engines. . . Dealer is now telling me the entire engine needs to be replaced including the turbochargers in the ballpark of $13,000.

Brand new car 30 days old. Came home and parked in our flat driveway and put shifter in park. Turned engine off and opened car door to get out and car began to roll backwards toward the street. Had to jump in before I or other people got run over. Put foot on brake. Shifter clearly in park. Car engine clearly off. Take foot off brake and car continue to roll backwards. Tried to start car but car would not let me. Put emergency brake on and turned car to auxiliary power. Display shows r (reverse) even though shifter is in park. Shifter cannot be moved. Had to have tow to dealer. Advised cable shifter broke (invoice attached). Just alerting NHTSA so that you are aware. Very dangerous when operator puts car in park, turns engine off and exits vehicle, and car rolls backwards out of control. Should not happen on any car let alone a brand new one.
