Towed to Ford dealer closed till Monday. Monday morning Ford dealer says its a throttle actuated stuck have to replace throttle body. They did a good job on the road couple hours later. This a very serious safety issue.

I was driving northbound on us 23 on 6/10/2017 when my vehicle suddenly decelerated and would not respond to gas pedal. I coasted to the side of the road fortunately without striking another vehicle or the vehicle behind me rear ending me. A orange wrench appeared on the digital screen in my instrument cluster and a message appeared that said "see manual. " manual stated this was a power-train failure. I turned car off and restarted and was able to drive on. Once restarted, the wrench symbol disappeared. On 6/11/2017, while driving to work, the vehicle did the same thing only 1. 5 miles after ignition. Sudden deceleration, coast to side of road, very low rough idle and would not respond to gas pedal depress. Fortunately no vehicles behind me. This time I had my wife bring my scan tool to me and I plugged into the obd2 port and received a code "p2111 throttle actuator control system - stuck open. " once again I turned car off and back on and was able to continue on. I went to bruce walters Ford in pikeville, ky on 6/12/2017 at 2pm and attempted to have the vehicle repaired. The service adviser as well as service manager advised me they could not read any code and therefore could not do anything. I explained that it resets when you turn off and back on and there is no way to drive the car when it happens because it is disabled. I was advised by both people that I just needed to drive the car until it broke down and have it towed in while still running that way they could read the code. I thought this was unbelievable. No tow service will tow a running car. I tried to explain but was only told that they had to be able to read the code to help. I left dealership and called Ford corporate and was told the same thing. Drive until I broke down and have it towed while running so the code could be read. Having a vehicle randomly shut down on the road is super dangerous.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Flex. When the vehicle was started, the "driver door ajar" warning indicator illuminated and beeped. When the vehicle was in drive, a "shift to park" warning indicator illuminated and seized until the vehicle was stopped. The failures were not diagnosed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. The failure recurred. The failure mileage was 79,000.

Transmission and power transfer unit (ptu). The transmission has been shifting awkwardly since 10,000 miles. Have been to the dealer numerous times and they are unable to diagnose. A mechanic at larry h. Miller Ford, in lakewood CO, recently told me the transmission might or should be recalled in the future. At 87,506 miles the ptu went out and had to be replaced at a cost of $1,692. 26. The ptu came originally without a drain plug and was impossible to service. Replacement ptu does have a drain pug. I believe both the transmission and ptu are defective designs and need to be recalled.

My Flex ptu system had to be replaced because it fell apart while driving. There was a loud boom then severe grinding when I tried to accelerate. The mechanic said this problem happens so often with Ford awd systems that they keep them in stock. I contacted Ford directly to complain and find what they were doing about it. I was advised there was nothing they could do and that I should file a complaint with you. The cost to repair my vehicle will be $1500. That is not a minor fix and I believe Ford should be doing something about this.
Transmission. When the temperature is 40 degrees or below I sometimes have an automatic transmission problem. In the morning after the vehicle was parked over night I start the vehicle, put it into reverse, I back 40 feet down my driveway which has about a 30 degree grade down to the street. . I stop on the street, put it into drive and turn to the right to proceed forward up the street with about 10 degree grade for about 300 feet, then the street has about a 15 degree grade for the next 200 feet after which it has a 5 degree grade for 75 feet at which point there is a stop sign at a busy two lane cross street that is fairly level and has a 35 mph speed limit. I stop until the traffic gives me a 100 to 150 feet more break between passing vehicles so I can turn right, many times the engine revs to 4000 rpms but the vehicle accelerates vary slowly at picking up speed. I often travel 600 to 100 feet before I attain 25 mph. Then it shifts into the correct gear. I have had it to the dealer 3 years ago but the Ford dealer charged to test it but found no problems. Four months later I took it to aamco who found a problem and repaired it, "they thought" replacing some parts. The same problem persists after the "repair". The excuse is that the car is warmed or the conditions cannot be reproduced. The Ford dealer said that they cannot come 8 miles to my home in the morning to reproduce the conditions. The transmission fluid level has always been declared to be ok.
The power transfer unit (ptu) fails on a number of Ford models. The seal leaks and in my case the unit needed to be replace because of metal shavings. The cost for repairs $2,600.
Vehicle was in motion at highway speed when it suddenly decellerated and check engine light came on. Driver was able to steer/coast to side of road. Engine was running, but vehicle had no acceleration. Vehicle was towed to a dealer and dealer replaced the throttle body part. Dealer indicated defective throttle body parts were not uncommon on Ford vehicles. Sudden decelleration could have resulted in significant safety risk had traffic been heavier and/or less skilled driver.
Purchased my 2015 Ford Flex on may 11, 2016 with 54 miles. On Saturday, July 2, 2016 the wrench light came on while driving and the car shut-down. I was able to get it started and drove home, which was less than 5 miles away. The code per the manual, powertrain failure. Engine light was on as well. I noticed it would move a little sluggish when going up a hill and also noticed the sound of the transmission taking a few seconds to switch gears. Roadside assistance towed it to the dealership and they are saying the throttle body was defective and will need to be replaced; however. . . . . It's on backorder for weeks. On July 5, 2016, I sent and email via Fords website and received an email response from meagan, a customer relationship center rep. With Ford on 7/5/16 at 2:53pm. Meagan's response stated that she, "escalated my case to the service manager at my dealership (of purchase), and ensured the service manager will use all resources available to assist me. " Ford case number: cas-9974632-s3q0b3.
July 1 I was driving the car running some errands (bank, post office, grocery store) when the car suddenly lost power turning across oncoming traffic on a four lane highway. This was one day after I had the car at the dealership for more diagnostic work and they could not find anything wrong without the code. I left the car running after making it home and called Ford roadside assistance for a tow to the dealership. When wrecker driver arrived after a two hour wait he said he could not tow car with engine running (against dot rules and regulations) so engine was turned off and code was lost again. Car was delivered to the dealership and I told them to keep the car until repairs were properly made. I ask for a loaner but I was told they didn't have one. No offer was made for a rental. They did give me a ride back home where I sat over the July 4th holiday with no transportation. Totally lost for what to do next? any suggestions?.
Regarding NHTSA complaint no. 10876758. Had the car at the dealership this morning and nothing was found. They think it is the throttle body but can't repair it without authorization from Ford motor company. Service writer said he would call me if and when he got authorization (no idea when that might be). No offer was made to leave car until repairs were made and replace with a loaner. I drove the car back home approximately 25 miles one way. This afternoon I drove it to the grocery store with my wife riding along and upon returning home I was turning across two lanes of oncoming traffic onto the road I live on when the car stalled again. Dealership just called and said Ford will not authorize repair without the code showing on the reader. So, on to the next step.
Wife was driving the car 6-21-16 at approximately 55 mph when suddenly and unexpectedly the car lost power. She was able to get the car off the road without incident but could have been rear ended. Drivetrain malfunction/reduced power icon was displayed on instrument panel. Car was towed to nearest Ford dealership but no problem was found. I picked the cat up and drove it until the morning of 6-26-16 and the same thing happened to me. I got off the road, put the car in park, turned the switch off and pulled the key out. I waited a few minutes, put the key back in, started the car, put the shifter in drive and was able to get back home. Waiting on a call back from the dealership now to see what my next step should be. Definitely a safety issue!.
Vehicle would not go in reverse when put in reverse. Also, when the new part was delivered to fix the vehicle, they delivered a damaged part and had to send it back and re-order a functional part.
Car started 2 years ago with "stuttering" when driving between 50-60 mph, as if the car couldn't determine which gear to stay in. Had transmission flushed and refilled in April 2016. Problem was less but still remained. Added dr shutter in June 2016 to the transmission fluid and problem has went away, that was last year. Paint on the hood is peeling and started out as a small chip may 2016, and is now the size of a 2 basketballs. Black body pieces that are between the windows on the side and in front by the windshield are loose and coming off. Will provide photos if needed.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Flex. While driving at a slow speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to respond. The vehicle was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the halfshaft disengaged from the linkshaft and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v393000 (power train). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,100.

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford Flex. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds in traffic and approaching a hill, the vehicle accelerated independently without warning. The contact to depressed the brake pedal which failed to engaged properly. The vehicle loss motive power and decelerated. The contact pulled over to the shoulder, pumped the brake pedal bringing the vehicle to a stop. The vehicle was turned off and restarted and operated as designed. The contact stated that on several occasions the vehicle failed to start-up. Additionally, the back over prevention camera failed to illuminate while in reverse. The contact stated that there were unknown electrical failures on the inside and outside of the cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to crest Ford of niantic (218 flanders rd, niantic, CT 06357, (860) 739-5403) to be diagnosed however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The fuel sensor and acl modulator were repaired however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified by email. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.
After several visits to the dealer, beginning at 52k in April 2014 complaining of a burning oil smell after highway driving, the dealer diagnosed the problem to be a failed ptu/pto and needing replacement for $1800 after I exceeded 75k miles. I advised Ford that I returned my vehicle several times before my 75k extended warranty expired. They apparently never checked the ptu. The are several reports of of failed ptus on tarurus's, Flexes, edges, mkt's sharing this same unit which Ford says is only replaced and requires no maintenance. Googling ptu failure returns multiple posts and responses. Fordflex. Net, Fordedgeforum. . Read more...

While accelerating from a stop with the ecoboost system , the car will almost stall, then speed up with out your foot on the pedal. It blows black smoke and then it will be fine. This has happened on and off for the past several months, the car had an extended warranty in which this showed up. While this was going on I have had to replace the power transfer unit because it locked up, then the car would only work in front wheel drive, have had nothing but trouble since the car radiator fan system burned up and they replaced. They have re-flashed modules after they could not figure out what was happening, however it still does it. I am worried as the car has speed up to 2000 rpm while driving and stayed there with out the gas pedal being pressed.
Both front axle half shafts worn, dealer repaired.
10/15 eaps failure can't steer car no fix several repeat problems 4/15 cold air when using heater on passenger side fixed but since then water on passenger side when using air conditioning several service calls no fix 4/15 oilk leak for awd system several tries then service finallyt replaced complete awd unit.
I was in park in my driveway, which is steep, and the Flex rolled after being in park for 2 minutes. My three year old son was in the vehicle so I tried to jump into the vehicle and put my right hand on the brake pedal. The vehicle knocked me out and dragged me down, releasing me at the bottom of the driveway. I woke up to see the vehicle back into the other side of my u-shaped driveway and proceed forward, hopping my neighbor's curb, stopping in their bushes. My son was okay, but I sustained a broken and dislocated right wrist, and multiple road rashes on my feet, knees, right arm, left hand requiring sutures, right side of my face and a laceration in my scalp requiring sutures. These injuries were extremely painful and I lost the use of both hands for one month. At 8 weeks, I still do not have the full use of my left thumb and I require physical therapy on my right wrist as it is still not back to fully functioning. I took the vehicle to a local Ford dealer and they could not find anything wrong. I contacted Ford with written documentation and photos of my injuries and Ford did not even offer any form of sympathy or resolution to the problem. They denied my claim and offered no help! it's impossible to get out of any vehicle on our driveway in any gear other that park. I'm telling the truth and physics are proof enough. Though nothing mechanically defective was found by Ford, it happened, period. I was injured but lucky that neither my son nor others were hurt. I did nothing to cause this; it was a failure of the vehicle somehow but Ford stated that since they couldn't find the problem, they're denying my claim.
My Flex started making a little grinding noise when only turning right at first. Now it sounds really bad turning either way. And it shakes when accelerating.
Vehicle stop running no power.
Vehicle was parked on side of road, on an incline facing uphill, with engine running. 2 adult passengers in vehicle. Without notice vehicle began rolling backwards. Passenger turned wheel in an attempt to stop vehicle on curb. Center console prevented passenger from being able to access vehicle brakes or parking brake. Vehicle ended up striking another vehicle before it came to rest. Luckily there were no injuries as hill ends in cul-DE-sac with large drop off. I requested local Ford dealers inspect powertrain system as a car in park should not suddenly begin rolling. 2 local dealers have refused to look at vehicle citing they do not want to get involved.
Original owner 2010 Ford Flex, ecoboost engine: sudden loss of engine power with shuddering and stall in fast lane; up hill while passing at speed, 60mph to 20mph in seconds causing near collision from behind. Engine would not recover, 20mph in fast lane with semi's and speeding traffic, no pull-off area. Clear dry day, temperature around 55 degree. Not the first time engine shuddering experienced, but the most dangerous. Always occurs during acceleration (pulling out in traffic or passing, etc. ). Began to notice loss of power, whining and grinding noises from turbos about two weeks ago; subsequent catastrophic failure of both turbo chargers with billowing black smoke and oil dripping from exhausts. 38k miles, garage kept, all service points maintained, driven like grandmother since new. Fist the rear brakes locked up while driving at 18k miles, now engine failure at 38k. Do something ntsb before these vehicles kill someone!.
Engine stumbled and then lost power. It re-started but idled at 750rpm. Car would not accelerate. Placing the car into neutral and depressing the accelerator did not increase the engine speed. This persisted about 3-4 minutes. Afterwards, the engine speed responded to the accelerator, and when placed in gear, accelerated normally. This has happened three times in the past year.
On approximately August 15, 2013 we were driving our son to school when chimes came on stating that our doors were open. We stopped, checked all doors. None were ajar. We continued on driving at which time our son opened the door. Had he not been in a car seat he probably would have fallen out. We were in a residential neighborhood and were only going about 15- 20 mph. Our chimes continued to go off and still to this day we are having the same problem. We have taken it into the dealership many times and explained the problem. The dealership did tell us that they are aware that there are problems with the sensors but that there haven't been any recalls. They did change one of the sensors for the front passenger door at our own expense, however it has not fixed the problem because it is going off still and now the driver front one is starting as well as a "shift to park" sensor. The doors will not lock and the lights will not turn off inside the car. As far as the transmission problem goes. It will slip into neutral as you are driving. It has happened may times and it is going to cause a serious car accident. You have to stop the car, turn the engine off and restart it in order for it to go back into drive. We have brought this to the dealerships attention however every time we take it into there they say they cant see or find a problem with it. It is very frustrating because we make a car payment every month on a vehicle we don't drive. We have a 2009 Flex that we have never had any problems with which is why we purchased a newer one with a lot less miles! unfortunately we owe more than the car is worth on our 2013 Flex otherwise we would have gotten rid of it by now. We hope you will really look into these problems before someone ends up really hurt! we notice there was a recall with similar problems but ours was not included in that supposedly.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Flex. The contact stated that the vehicle had a sudden drastic reduction in speed. Upon making a left or right turn, the vehicle seemed as if it would stall. The vehicle was taken to three different authorized dealers, but they were not able to replicate and diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was unable to provide a permanent remedy. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 13,000.
Sitting at red light. . Foot on brake. . . Car lurched forward almost hitting car in front. This has happened two times. Third time March 29, 2013 car was coasting about 2-5 miles an hour. . . Sudden acceleration so car lurched forward.
Transmission on Flex often hesitates and thunks with a lurch. The lurch is so bad it now feels like we are being hit. It has happened in both forward and reverse. Tried to get it repaired twice at dealer - haven't been able to fix. Online forums with owners and service bulletins describe similar problem. Ford not acknowledging issue or helping.
Lunging and stalling at start up and when accelerating at highway speeds.
After owning the new vehicle for three months it started randomly slipping into neutral. At first, it did this when accelerating from a stop (which is very dangerous in busy intersections, left turns and merging). It now does it then and in addition at highway speeds - 50+. It also at times has engine surges when at a complete stop. It also surges and hesitates at 45mph to highway speeds, at times causing such a speed variance that it will shut cruise control off, slip into neutral and rapidly decelerate before correcting itself. There have been 5 repair attempts at a Ford dealership. They have not been able to determine the problem. They sent it home with me until it does it "all the time" or breaks down.
Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Ford Flex. The contact stated whenever shifting into the reverse position the transmission would jerk violently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer six times for the identical failure. The technician detected a trouble code and an unknown repair was performed on the transmission. The malfunction recurred after the repair. The vehicle was currently being repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000. The VIN was unavailable.
