I have a 2002 Ford Focus with 24600 miles on the car. The brake pads and rotors where gone when I took the auto into the shop.
On 2 occasions I complained to dealership re the amount of brake powder on the front wheels - these were on the first two oil change visits. Both times I was told that this was normal (hub caps were dark charcoal). Took car in to dealership on 2/14/04 for routine oil change and was told that the brake pads needed to be replaced but that the rotors had not been affected. Car had only 14,300 miles, extremely low mileage for pads to be worn out. Rep told me to bring car back for them to check for defect in brakes. I took the car back 5 days later and was told that not only were the pads bad, but that a mistake was made in rotor reading Saturday and that rotors had to be replaced as well. There were serious communication problems which were later resolved, but I wound up paying meineke for pads ($133. 00 incl labor) for a lifetime guarantee instead of fairway Ford's price - $145 for 12,000 mile pads (same brand installed by the factory) or $195 for Ford product. That night (2/19) I called Ford headquarters to inquire about whether they had had previous, similar complaints. Was told that they had no record of such complaints and that they could not help me; that they have to rely on the judgment of the service manager of that particular dealership and I should contact him. I wound up involving my attorney and writing to the service manager who investigated and found in my favor. They replaced the rotors for free. My concern is that Ford is obviously using an inferior product; that I have found numerous complaints posted on the web about the Focus brake pads; that there is a class action suit still in the discovery stage concerning the 2000 and 2001 Focus brakes; and that I believe Ford motor company should be held accountable. I appreciate that the service manager wound up apologizing and replacing the rotors for free, but this should never have happened in the first place.
I have a 2002 Ford Focus, the brakes are shot on this thing at only 26000 miles. Contacted Ford on the this, to no avail. Did some research on the web after my contact with Ford, and found that there are hundreds, maybe thousands of people. That have a Ford Focus that have the same problem. There is no way a vehicle should have bad brakes at 26000 miles. In some cases as low as 15000 miles. Ford doesn't seem to care to much about this, at least thats the impression that I got when I talked with them. There anything that you people can do about it.
At 19,000 miles I had to replace the front pads/rotors because the pads woe out and had chewed through the rotors. This is my wife's car, it's not driven hard, and now at 33,000 miles I have to replace the front and rear pads, hopefully that's all. This car is crap and a rip off.
After getting the state inspection on the car done, the service technician told us that the car had failed due to the rotors and pads needing replaced. Upon contacting the dealership, the service manager told us that this was normal wear and would cost us 695 to replace. The vehicle has less than 36000 miles, this should not be normal.

Front brake pads and rotors had to be replaced after only 20,000 miles of driving. The mechanic told me that this is a common problem with all the Focus's he has seen.
There is serious problems w/ the front end of this vehicle. It was purchased approx. 17 months ago. Since then, I have had 3 major brake jobs. Twice, the pads were replaced and once both the pads and the rotors have had to be replaced. The vehicle also resonates at high speeds. Everything shakes including the sterring wheel and the states. It appears my two front tires are out of round. Ford originally said it was defect in the tire, which I replaced, however the new tire is out of round as well. An independent garage says that there is a problem with the front struts. Ford has numerous complaints from me reguarding both the brakes and the suspension system. Also the vehicle is very loud and it appears to be air coming in when. Ford initially resealed the windshield, however the problem has persisted.

Brakes/rotors/pad have worn and/or malfunctioned more than three times in the two years I have had this car. The first time was within two months of ownership, dealer repaired, but only after pressing the point. Had to replace the above twice already. One time brakes failed as my wife drove my children and nearly resulted in a serious accident. Brake problems happening yet again. Why is this not a recalled issue? I am out hundreds of dollars for this.

When brakes get wet, they make a whistling sound; this problem occurred before when turning; the rotors have been cut and the brake pads replaced; the car has less than 4,000 miles on it.
We had to place the 6th set of tires on our car. We haven't had a single set of tires last longer than 20,000 miles. We have our tires rotated and balanced and front-end aligned regularly. We have replaced the front brake pads 5 times. We have had all 5 recalls repaired on the car. When I had the rear bearing replaced under warranty the technician told me that they had to order emergency bearings overnight because it was not safe to drive. When I inquired about a rental car, he offered to reassemble my car and let me drive it home (even though it was unsafe)! this has always been a loud car, but a week ago there was a loud roaring, grinding noise up front that gets especially loud when I turn to the right. After having a technician look at it, he says the front bearings are gone and the front rotors and brake pads also need to be replaced again. I am in the same situation as everyone else: because this car has had so many problems and complaints it is only valuing at $3000 after 3 years. Ford should be forced to do something to satisfy all of these dissatisfied customers.
The vehicles brakes squeaked frequently. The dealer stated that the front pads needed to be replaced at 37000 miles. The consumer stated it is to early to change pads. Both tires also need to be replaced.

I am the original owner of a 2002 Focus se. April 2003, I passed NY state inspection w/o any problems. August 2003 I bring my car in for an oil change and I am told that both front and rear brake pads need to be replaced ASAP b/c they are all the way down to the rotor. There were no warning sounds coming from the brakes. The dealer also tells me it will cost me $600. 00 to repair! I called Ford in detroit and they told me that it was a high price, but they don't control dealer's prices. They also tell me that there is no reported problems w/the brakes, so it must be me. I do not brake hard. The mileage on the car has been through soft driving. I took it to a local car repair who told me not only do I need front/back brakes, but that cars aren't designed to wear brakes down at the same rate. At this shop it cost me $325. My Focus has only 30,000 miles and the brakes have been serviced four times for the same reason. I have had to replace my brake pads and rotors do to the excessive warping and wearing. Fixed numerous times, and the problem persists. Dealership informed me that this is a major issue with the Focus, but no recall has been made to notify the problem. I guess Ford is waiting for a few fatalities before addressing the issue. Sad but true. Welcome to corporate America!.
Brake pads and rotors replaced at 27,000 miles on my 2000 Focus. The Ford dealership I take my car to for service said that replacing the rotors on this car is 'normal'. They said that the rotors are soft and tend to wear-out fast and that is was not covered under the warranty. They said the Ford escape had this issue also. I took my car to les schwab for the repair because they provide a 2 year 36,000 mile warranty on the brakes.
Consumer states that since purchasing the vehicle rear brake pads wore out at 8000 miles. Front rotors and pads have been replaced twice. Once at 12000 miles, and 34000 miles. Needs to replace them again.
I have a Ford Focus se 2001 and there is a design flaw in the front brake pads. The pads are not sufficient enough to support the weight of this vehicle, therefore the brakes are wearing at a rapid rate in 8 to 10,000 miles. I had an accident in July of 2003 because the brakes wore almost gone and I could not stop in time and hit a vehicle in front of me. The brakes on the Focus need to be investigated and I am sure I am not the only owner who is having problems. So far Ford has replaced my brakes twice and my car has 33,000 miles. Now they are lying to me and telling me my brakes are fine and I know that they need to be replaced, but they won't do it again under warranty. I have service records to prove that the brakes have been a problem since I bought the car. Please investigate this problem these should be recalled and Ford needs to design a brake pad to support the weight of this vehicle. This is a serious issue and I could not prove my accident was a result of these faulty brakes.
The dealer replaced the brake rotors and pads twice in one year and once again they need to be replaced.
When applying brakes at any speed a squeaking sound was heard. Dealer replaced front pads, then on second occurrence, front rotors were replaced. This did not resolve the problem.
Brake pads are warped and wear out in a short period of time. Every 20,000 miles had to replace them.
I have a Ford Focus with only 35,000 miles on it. It is used for light driving, but my rotors and pads are completely worn. I've never had a car that has such a bad brake system. Ford should be responsible for putting such poor quality brakes on a car. It is a safety hazard.
My wife owns a 2001 Ford Focus zx3 with anti-lock brakes. It now has almost 29,000 miles and the front brakes are still squeaking and grinding almost with every use. It has been to 2 different dealers since it was purchased in July 2001. They have made 4 repair attempts under warranty, but the brakes still make a lot of noise and brake dust. The pads and rotors have been replaced and various other brake parts also. The service manager (richard) at adams Ford in belton, mo informed me today they would do no more to fix the problem. He laughed and said feel lucky you don't own a mercedes because their brakes sounded like a dump truck stopping.

On 11-12-2001 I purchased a new Ford Focus at a Ford dealership. On 5-13-03, the front wheels began to make a loud grinding noise and the brakes failed to operate normally. The car had only 18411 miles on it and when taken to the dealership where it was purchased, they said the brake pads and rotors were shot and needed to be replaced. I complained that no vehicle brake systems should fail that early at that low mileage but the dealership would not assist me in any way, instead charging me $469. 57. The vehicle was not misused and was driven under normal conditions by mature drivers. This year/model Ford Focus was manufactured poorly and I have read of numerous other complaints about this vehicle. There was a problem when Ford built the car and they should be held responsible for correcting the problem.
Brakes are completely ruined along with rotors in 11,000 miles. Completely unthinkable. Dealer says they have noticed a problem but no one is willing to do anything. I am very unhappy.

At this early mileage the brake pads and rotors need to be replaced. We were informed by the service manager at the dealer that this is a problem the see often because of the type of brake pads and type of rotors. This is unbelievable that Ford is hiding this problem. Front breaks squeaked. Brought to dealer. Put in front brakes and pads. Still squeaked. Back to dealer. Told me now I needed rear brake shoes and the drum needs to be sanded. Car is driven normally and only has 14,000 miles on it.
While having vehicle serviced for another problem dealership noticed that brake pads and rotors wore out prematurely and needed replacement.
Front disc brake pads are worn and must be replaced after 15,000 miles. Ford dealer claims the premature wear is normal and not covered by warranty. The vehicle is driven gently in a combination of city and open road driving, without any unusual braking requirements. We live near some mountains, but this vehicle is almost never driven in the mountains. There have been no unusual events that might have damaged the brakes. Therefore the pad and/or rotor are defective in design or manufacturer. There is no way that total wear of the brakes should occur in only 15,000 miles of normal driving.
Brakes have had to be replaced twice in the past year. Dealership refuses to replace them the second time. Brakes are totally unsafe.
