Ford Focus owners have reported 5 problems related to electric power assist steering system (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Focus based on all problems reported for the Focus.
As I was driving down the road my power steering went out. I pulled over and tried to turn the car off and on and had no luck. I then got a warning that said my power steering malfunctioned. I do not know what I would have done if I were on the interstate as I had been 2 minutes earlier. I cannot believe I am alive. This is the second time something like this has happened. The other time I just had my car stall out on the interstate as I drove down it. That time it was a transmission issue.

Car has 122k miles. At the end of August 2021, the electronic power steering failed while my son was driving home from work, making the car difficult to steer while driving. The car displayed a notification of power steering failure. The dealer has had the car for two weeks, they confirmed a complete failure in the electronic power steering module. The dealer said they have to replace the entire steering rack at a cost up to $2500. I see this similar failure has led to a recall on the same year Ford fusion, but not on the Ford Focus. Clearly this has to be a manufacturer defect. 900 complaints in NHTSA for this issue and no recall issued.

The steering assist shut off mid drive while turning off the highway and almost got killed by hitting the divider in the center.

Power steering was intermittent starting in 2014, usually on hot days or when driving for an extended period of time. By intermittent, I mean it would have power assist, then none, while driving with only a dash indicator "I". Finally, in 2016 the power steering utterly failed. Ford was unable to diagnose the issue if the car was not currently in the failed state. Ford wants the entire electronic power steering module replaced. Forums have indicated this is a known deficiency in heat-shielding the electronics within the module and failures while driving could lead to accidents and death.
Dear sir, during a normal ride the steering was blocked-out. I was close to a crash. Car is a Ford Focus c-max, and has electric steering system. Two of my colleagues had the same problem with their cars around 30000 km (mine is 50000 km) and Ford recommend "not to use the air conditioning system because the error appear more often". When my car had this problem Ford just reset the computer and they said car is ok now. I ask if the problem will appear again, and answer was "if it appear we will change the module" . Usual after such issue you have not the second chance to change it, and after crash is impossible to identify the error. I have papers printed from Ford computer with the description of the error.
