Got my daughter her first used car from a dealer, which I should had gone with her to check it out first since an 18 year old would most likely not know anything much of a car besides driving it. You would think buying from a used dealer is safer than buying out in the street. So when we took it out of the lot noticed engine tremble and suspension noise, (too bad no lemon law on used dealer selling this type of cars). After diagnose the engine produced a catalytic convert malfunction code. Also after inspection the Focus needs all four suspension struts. A month later that other suspension noise resulting almost in a accident from a back wheel shaking which came from a back wheel bearing which hub nut was just about off, which would had caused the wheel to come off. I did a search and this are all common problems with the Focus and I believe there was a recall for a back wheel issue. The bad news is that after a while of the recall being issued it is voided or only specific VIN numbers are considered effected ????. The latest encounter is the steering column locking and the key not being able to unlock it. The worst part is that the ignition cylinder would have to be drilled out to be replaced (very interesting since is the first time I seen that). I'm noticing from my experience with Ford vehicles that although in my opinion there engine and transmission are a bit better than most vehicle, is the little parts that one have issues with that ends up costing the most, just saying. So why is it that with many complaints and known issues from previews model years Ford has not attempt to resolve the issues. I bet there would be many other people out there complaining if only they new they can complaint, the question is, is anyone going to do something about it!!!.

I was driving my 2007 Ford Focus with 40k miles on a highway going about 60mph. I heard/felt a vibration from the rear of the vehicle. I thought the muffler was coming loose. Then the left rear wheel came off the car. There were no cars behind me and I was in the right hand lane so I made it to the shoulder. The wheel bearing had failed. The cost to repair it was $500. I see there was a recall on 2007 Fords for a similar problem 07v270000 with wheels coming off but that was for front wheels of rear wheel drive cars. I had the car in for the 35k maintenance in September and had not been in any accidents, or had any service done to the car since then. The dealership employees said it was unusual for a car with just 40k miles to have that type of failure and saw nothing, parts melted, etc to indicate anything other than the bearing failure. The flat bed driver stopped and picked up the wheel and it was reattached to the spindle. The car is only 2 years old and I have to drive it though I can no longer trust it. I was planning to drive to florida with my daughter to take her to college in 4 weeks so it was a mercy it failed now rather than coming down a steep highway in kentucky doing 75. I will have to give her my other car to keep as I cannot trust the Focus.

No special events took place to cause damage. I am at 75k miles. Both right wheel bearings have gone bad (both front and rear) and requires the entire hub to be replaced at $350 each. Rear hub almost caused tire to fall off while driving, caused brake failure and abs failure. Also required rear brakes and abs chip to be replaced.
A "grinding" noise was heard when brakes were applied. Inspected brakes - found no problem. Within a few days the grinding noise turned into a constant "growling"/ "rumbling" noise. Re-inspected wheels/ brakes and found drivers side rear wheel to be loose / wobble (lug nuts were properly torqued). Closer inspection revealed that the hub/ wheel bearing assembly had "significant play". While the car was jacked up the drivers side rear wheel would go from "easily spun to nearly locked up". The "rear bearing retaining cap recall" was performed on this car years ago - we are the original owner of this car.
While driving down road about 60 mph and the back hub began to make a grinding noise without warning. It was a split second from falling off. Also, rear bearings went out. Had to be towed to an independent repair shop, who noted that the both rear bearings went out. Visible to naked eye, could look back at wheel and see that it was about to fall off. Recall for corrosive issued, but this vehicle was not involved in the recall. Vehicle is currently in shop for repairs. Spouse checked wheel to see if it was properly secured, and discovered the hub was totally rusted.

My 2001 Ford Focus zx3 (zetec) was traveling on freeway, and the rear end began to wobble, fish tail side to side, spark, and smoke. The rear passenger bearing was destroyed, and I was stranded while on leave from my duties as a marine. I purchased a new bearing and fitted it myself. I recall a "recall" notice I received, and I remember turning in the vehicle to have the defect corrected, but it obviously was not. I no longer have this notice. I spoke with a local dealer and the technician, I talked to said that they had replaced all the rear bearings in the Ford Focuses that they had sold many months ago. Upon further investigation, we found that the hub and bearing assemblies that I had and the new one that Ford had on hand were dissimilar in that the newer ones had a sealing flange attached to the inside of the bearing. I'm taking the vehicle itself to the dealership that supposedly examined the part before for further scrutiny and reconsideration for my bill.
The front driver's wheel bearing and hub went out at about 7,000. The car made a very loud noise. Ford repaired this problem. Car had to have brake pads at 28,000 miles. The wear on the driver's side front was much worst than the others. Repair person said that the calipers were defective. Cost 100. Dollars. The front passenger's side wheel bearing and hub went out at 29,000. I paid for repair of wheel $150. I was told that the driver's side was going out again. There is obviously a problem with the front suspension of this car. I am now faced with repairs of the other side for a second time and the car is only 18 months old. I am worried that the wheels will come off.
