36 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 11/01/2016

Auburn, me - while reversing out of my driveway the "auto steering assist failure" message appeared and I lost power steering in the vehicle, steering wheel was almost impossible to turn. Left car for the evening and started the car again in the morning. Warning message did not appear and power steering seemed to have returned. I had the car towed to the local Ford dealership. Mechanics were unable to find an issue or reproduce it after having the vehicle for three days. Sited that they had not heard of or seen any issues with power steering failures with other Ford Focus vehicles. The vehicle has 130k (aprx) miles.

37 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/22/2016

Steering warning light came on so I turned the car off and when I turned it back on it was gone. I then backed out of my spot and put it into drive. The car lost all power steering and was unable to move. I turned the car off and back on and this fixed the problem (no warning lights). This happened many times over the next few weeks but without the warning light going off. Now I have no power steering at all in forward or reverse and it does not get fixed when turning the car off and back on. Took it to the dealer and they said the steering module had failed and would need to be replace. I have done research on line and many other people have had this same problem. Why has this not been a safety recall is beyond me. Very disappointed with Ford and NHTSA for not already acting on this!.

38 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/05/2016

This is the second time this has happened in a month that the power steering module light has come on while driving and I lost power steering. I had to restart the car to reset it. Thankful I (and everyone else) was safe and in a secluded area when it happened. This happening on the freeway or neighborhood could be a different story.

39 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/15/2016

A message of "steering assist malfunction" appears. Lose power steering . . Hard to drive. When you turn off the car and turn it back on it "fixes" itself and you can drive. Otherwise, very difficult to drive. Very hard to turn when driving.

40 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/06/2016

Our 2012 Ford Focus all of a sudden lost its power steering capabilities making the car extremely difficult to steer, turn or control. My 20 year old daughter who drives the car daily is of slight build, so her safety was at jeopardy behind the wheel. This problem occurred while she was driving near our home on 9/6/16. I drove it immediately and found it very difficult to maneuver, so I brought it to a Ford dealer that same day. On 9/7/16 I was told the rack & pinion electronic system failed and the repair costs are over $1900. I feel this is a safety issue that Ford needs to address and pay for the complete charges. The vehicle is unsafe to drive at this point until the expensive problem is resolved.

41 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/21/2016

Warning light came on stating "steering assist fault". . We lost all power steering while driving the car. We were able to get the car into a rest area off the highway. We had no power steering and it made it very difficult to operate the car. The steering gear needed to be replaced at 36,900 miles at a cost of $2,121. 74. Ford customer service was no help at all to me. They were suppose to return calls within 4 hours and it took me 10 days until I was able to get a call back. There currently is no recall but 900 miles past warranty I would not expect this to happen.

42 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

Power steering failure, causing the car to loose power steering while the car was in motion on a highway. The problem was intermittent and was initially resolved by restarting the car. However, a week after the problem first started (and less than 50 driving miles later), the car completely lost all power steering. This all started about a month after an update for a transmission recall. According the Ford dealership, a gear had broken in the steering column resulting in the failure. When discussing the issue with a mechanic at a different shop, he said that type of damage typically is the result of significant crash force. The car had not been in an accident. Barring an accident, the mechanic said that it was more likely the result of a defective part or component.

43 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/17/2016

While driving the electric steering assistance fault code showed up. I lost the power steering on the vehicle. The wheel was extremely hard to steer. I was able to limp it home. If this my wife or daughter driving when this happened, I'm not sure if they could have been able to control the car. Doing a search on this issue I found multiple complaints file on this issue. This is a extreme safety issue that needs to be addressed by Ford before someone is seriously hurt or killed if it hasn't happened already.

45 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/29/2016

Electric power assist system - lost power steering. Lost power steering several times when starting then reset it self when shut off. Last time happened while daughter driving car. Now at shop. Being charged $2200 to fix while still paying on vehicle. Irritating. I have had nothing but problems with this vehicle.

46 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

Lost power steering. Received "steering assist fault" message. Vehicle can be driven, but complete power steering loss. Happened intermittently over last year, but usually righted itself upon vehicle restart. Last couple of months, the problem is constant. . . No power steering at all. Reading forums, it's obvious that this is a manufacturer problem, but still no recall issued. Would cost over $1800 to repair. Vehicle has a little over 92,000 miles. Other that this issue, great car.

47 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/09/2015

While driving at a low rate of speed, the vehicle became difficult to steer and the power steering assist malfunction light came on. I was able to muscle the car safely and get to my destination (the grocery store). Thinking that perhaps it was the power steering fluid, I checked it and saw that it was a little over minimum, so I added more. I turned the car back on and the issue was still present. I drove home and turned off the car. The next morning, the code was not on and the power steering was working though there was a groan coming from the steering wheel every time I had to turn. I drove to work trying to ascertain what would go on and about 25 minutes into my drive, while doing 50 miles an hour, I lost power steering again. I got to work, turned off the car, and came back out 9 hours later and the power steering had again reset itself and worked all the way back to my house. I have not been driving the car since and have to say that this is the second major issue with the car I have had; the transmission went out after having the car for 2 years. I have done research and there are many other Ford Focuses of this year with this issue. I am now extremely concerned about the safety of this car and regret buying it most sincerely.

48 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/02/2015

Stopped in stop-and-go traffic on a major highway, when I attempted to accelerate again the vehicle flashed a warning which said "hill start assist not available" and the engine died completely. I lost all power to the wheels and lost power steering, was able to coast to the shoulder, where the car would not start. All warning lights appeared to come on, including seatbelt, check engine, traction control, etc. The car indicated it was in "drive", in spite of the fact that I had the gearshift in park. It would not shift gears or allow me to start the engine. After sitting for 30-40 minutes waiting for a tow truck, the car suddenly appeared to function normally. I drove home, and 10 minutes later, while parallel parking, the incident occurred again: backing into a parking space and attempting to pull back out, going uphill, the exact same sequence of events occurred ("hill start assist not available", loss of power and steering). This time the vehicle coasted backwards into another car. No injuries or damage. The 2013 Ford Focus cannot be trusted to be driven on the highway. I have read many reports online of other drivers having identical or very similar issues with hill start assist/transmission/traction control errors, loss of power, loss of power steering, and inability to shift gears or restart the car, with this error sometimes happening *while driving at highway speeds* resulting in loss of control of the vehicle. I do not feel safe driving this car. I feel less safe knowing that Fords with this problem waiting to happen are being driving every day by unknowing drivers. This is a safety issue of the highest magnitude. It is absolutely outrageous that Ford has issued no recalls.

49 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 08/15/2015

I drove 200 miles, stopped for gas, and upon starting the engine there was a warning light and a loss of power steering. I drove to a hotel, unloaded our luggage, and returned to the car after 10 minutes. Upon starting the engine, I found that the warning light was out and the power steering was normal. Ten days later, the same thing happened; that is, I drove 200 miles, stopped for gas, lost the power steering, went to a hotel, and upon starting the engine the power steering had returned. Without power steering, the car was controllable but it was not easy and a frail person would have difficulty.

50 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/12/2015

While driving the vehichle the steering locks up and is very hard to steer to even get it off the road. The indicator in the car came on and warned of steering malfunction. Lost all power steering in the middle of driving down the road multiple times. Had to turn vehicle off to see if it would help, did momentarily but continues to malfunction after driving it. I can no longer drive my vehicle because it is not safe to do so, nor can I let my teenage daughter drive it because of the risk it poses if it happens to her while she id driving. If it was her, she would propbably wreck, because she would not know what to do. Ford refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem. . . . . . !!!!.

51 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/16/2015

2 weeks ago the car lost power steering while backing out of the driveway. There was not an accident at that time. Today 5-31-15 while traveling through a small curve on a neighborhood street, the car suddenly lost power steering again and caused my daughter to strike a brick mail box. Luckily, she is okay. The car has sustained significant damage and will have to have body work. When this happened I started to look to see if there were any recalls for this and saw that the Ford Focus is not included in the recall, however it is included in a class action law suit because of Ford's failure to acknowledge and handle the problem with the power steering. I have photographs of the damage and am willing to provide them to you if necessary.

52 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/14/2015

Wife was driving the car from work and on the way home suddenly the car lost the power steering, warning light came on and a warning to service the vehicle display on the screen stating there was a problem with the steering assist system. She almost hit another car trying to get to the side of the road because it was very difficult to steer the vehicle, scince she was close to the dealer where the vehicle was bought she carefuly made her way into the dealer and left it there for service. Later I was told by the dealer that it was a problem with the rack and pinion and they did not have the part available and it will take 3 weeks for the part to arrive. After a google search I found this vehicles are having problems with a epas system, tomorrow I will be talking to the service manager and see what they say about this. . .

54 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/27/2012

I had an earlier complaint on my first Focus purchased in March 2012. . . Incident date June 27 2012. . . I lost power steering on 3 occasions. . . Service was not able to fix it so they exchanged my car for an identical one on July 25, 2012. . . The second day I drove the new Focus, something strange happened with the steering while on the expressway. . . I was going about 60 mph on a straight road and the car started to wander to the right and it also did it to the left. . . The steering is very tight and was difficult to get the car going straight. . . I've been to the dealership and they say that is just how it drives. . If this true, I'll never be able to drive the expressway. . . This wandering was difficult to control and tiring to fight the wheel. . . . 2 new cars in 4 months time both with steering problems makes me think there are some kinks with the new electric steering on Fords. . . . This will be my first and last experience with Fords.
