2 Steering Wheel problem of the 2008 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/30/2008

I purchased a '08 Ford Focus- 4dr sdn se in March '08 from mark martin Ford in batesville, ar. July '08, doors locked & wouldn't open. Since the original delivery of the vehicle, it's been returned to dealership 14+ times. Vehicle has been out of service for repairs for a total of 209 calendar days (just from may 14,'10-Dec. 31,'10). It is documented that the car started having problems before 12,000 mi. Have been in contact with the ar atty. Gen's off, Ford motor company, Ford credit, mark martin Ford. Started lemon law proceedings & had an arbitration meeting set in Jan. '11. Ford customer care was working on a buyback/replacement. Ford wanted a second opinion. I took it to another dealership. Ford made many attempts to repair the vehicle. I sent a demand letter to Ford. They didn't attempt to do a final fix. Instead they repossessed the car. I was only 2 mos behind & made arrangements w/Ford credit to make a payment in Dec. '10. I did. I have a letter from mark martin Ford stating,"they have done all they know to do. " I have a letter from Ford stating, "although they admit to no wrong doing on their part, they want me to be a satisfied customer & are willing to waive the balance I owe" (yet it's on my credit report). The ar atty gen's off says I have a case. Vehicle has been in mark martin Ford on these dates for repairs/defects:7/30/08-rr door stays locked;7/30/08-rumble sound when driving;10/08/08-drs hard to open w/outside handle;10/08/08-rr dr won’t unlock;10/08/08-starter hung after car started;10/08/08-dust leaking in rr & lf;3/16/09-rr;3/16/09-rr dr weather-stripping falling down;3/16/09-popping noise in rf&lf;3/26/09-lr dr won’t unlock;8/07/09-lr tire sensor off;06/09/10-lfront dr won’t open from outside;06/09/10-lr dr won’t open;06/09/10-dr seal leaking dust in;8/21/10-lrear dr won’t open from;8/21/10-dust coming in.

4 Steering Wheel problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 04/29/2007

My 2002 Ford Focus wagon needed brakes because the front end would shake when I applied brakes. Also noticed a whirling noise from the back off car but did not mention that to my mechanic. He took it for a test drive and asked if I noticed the whirling noise too. He said he was concerned and checked that 1st. My right rear tire was frozen and not turning, that's where the noise was coming from. It had to be cut off in order to be replaced. He told me that the wheel could have broke off while driving and could have killed me, I had that repaired, along with front end brakes and replaced warped rotors. Then just 2 days later backed out of my driveway and broke a front right coil spring. A year later replaced the alternator. And last week just had to pay for a rebuilt transmission, because would not shift properly, upon observation the transmission had metal chips in transmission fluid and needed to be replaced. I cant believe no recall on this car!.

5 Steering Wheel problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/01/2003

I purchased this vehicle new, took delivery 9/28/02. A few months later, I noticed the material covering the steering wheel had developed some rough spots in the surface. I could not remember doing anything that would have scraped or roughened the surface. The material covering the steering wheel has continued to crumble off until now, large chunks are missing off about 6" of it, with the metal of the underlying steering wheel showing in a couple of spots. Another several inches are starting to disinigrate. The wheel does not rub against me while I am driving, but is occurring along the lower 1/3 of the wheel. Today, 7/16/03, I took it into the dealership to be replaced under warranty. They eventually agreed to do so, but not before the service technician tried to intimidate me out of replacing it by insisting that I had damaged it myself. I had to argue with both the technician and the service manager before they agreed to replace the wheel under warranty. This is a safety issue, for had they been successful in intimidating me, or other owners with the same problem, a faulty steering wheel unsafe to hold is what the owner would have been left with. I have filed this complaint for statistical purposes and for public information purposes.

12 Steering Wheel problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/30/2001

On Saturday, June 30, 2001, the steering wheel on my 2000 Ford Focus station wagon began to come loose. Specifically, the steering wheel was unresponsive when turned slightly, and was only effective when turned sharply. Then I noticed that the steering wheel was wobbling at the base -- I. E. , the point where the steering column entered the dashboard. I drove to ted britt Ford (where we bought the car) and left the car for servicing. On Tuesday, July 3, 2001, the service technician at ted britt (jim kiefer of the brown team) called me to inform me that the steering column had been assembled improperly by the manufacturer. I understood him to explain that the bolts to the steering column had not been sufficiently tightened, and had simply come loose over time. He stated that he had never seen this same problem before. I note that the car has between 19,000 and 20,000 miles on it, and it took approximately one year since we bought the car for this problem to manifest itself. It seems likely that most people who bought 2000 Ford Focus station wagons have not yet put 19,000 + miles on them, so this problem (if general to all or many Focuses) may still be latent in many cases. Thank you for your attention to this incident.

15 Steering Wheel problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

I have a 2000 Ford Focus zx3 that has been plagued with steering problems. On 4 separate occasions the steering wheel has locked up while I was in the process of making a left turn. Only after bringing the car to a complete stop, was I able to turn the wheel. After having the car into the shop 3 times, the best the service technicians can tell me is that they are unable to find the problem since it is intermittent in nature. The last time was easily the most frustrating. While making a left turn, the steering wheel became immovable. Unable to stop in time, I ran the right front tire of my vehicle into a curb. This is a repair bill that I had to pay because, according to the service technicians, the problem cannot be traced. While no injuries have resulted from this problem yet, it does have the possibility to become very dangerous and I feel others should be warned.

16 Steering Wheel problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Over a period of about 3 days and 200 miles the steer wheel became loose and increasing as continued to drive. Dealer took wheel apart and tightened.
