The torque converter output shaft fail, sudden loss of motive power with no warning. Takes too long for the shifts, stay on one shift for too long and wont change shift unless the driver stop accelerating. My vehicle seems to have the torque malfunction.
After stopping at a traffic light in my 2005 Ford Freestar the vehicle would not go forward. I had to be pushed to the side of the road until a tow truck arrived. However, after the vehicle was towed to my home I discovered that it would go in reverse with no problem, but when put into drive would slowly pull forward if on level ground. After speaking with a transmission repair shop I was informed that I had a faulty torque converter and that the 2004-2005 Ford Freestars with this problem were being recalled. Also, my third row seat will not properly latch.
After having the torque converter replaced as the recall says I noticed that the transmission was doing good but right outside the warrenty mileage I noticed that it started acting kinda like before after several months guess what as I was climbing up a hill on my driveway the transmission stopped pulling starting to roll backwards and making a grinding noise as for it to recall the torque converter then why has it once again almost like me with loss of all gears yet no new recall had been added why did it do this again?.

I was almost hit by a another vehicle when my vehicle torque converter given out on my family and me. It starts but will not shift in to gears.
I wrote on this yesterday but did some more research on this vehicle. There have been numerous recalls on these type of vehicles. Recall #12v006000 on the torque converter output shaft. Recall began August 9 2012. This is a serious matter I just recently purchased this vehicle to take my 8 grandchildren around. Now I won't even put them in it. I also found out there was a recall on the back seat. Recall # 13v081000. This is also a problem when your hauling around children. The undercarriage of the vehicle is really rusty. I wish I would of never bought this vehicle. It sure is going to be a money pit for sure. It only has 141000 miles on it. Very sad that Ford could make such a unsafe vehicle. I bought the vehicle and it seemed fine. 5 days into ownership the torque converter light came on while I was driving it. Drove it back home and started reading about how Ford has a recall on this situation and now I'm afraid to drive it anymore. This situation on these transmission has gone to court and Ford lost.

I was to the on us hwy 98 in lakeland FL when I approached the street light that turned red. When I stopped the caravan would not go into gears toward or reverse worked and I was in the middle of traffic very heavy and dangerous possision. Had to push of the road and wait for several hours before help arrived. Than I googled recalls and I seen that Ford made a recall on the make model and year of the caravan. I am not sure of how this possess works but the Ford company says that they will fix the issues with the torque converter.
Torque converter and output shaft. When accelerating internal shaft splines sounds stripped with no power to go . Tachometer in take off reves up when changing gears.
Vehicle was making a sound kind of like a misfire in the air intake or back fire in the exhaust. Listened several times and sounded like the noise was actually coming from under the vehicle. Took it for a diagnosis to j&a transmission in morris, IL their diagnosis was it's the torque converter which is a recall for this year make and model but Ford is unwilling to help us be safe and repair the issue since our VIN isn't listed in their system for the recall. Nhtsa issued the recall for all 2004-05 models. See pe09-033.
On June 5th 2017 we hit a deer with our van on the drivers side. After the deer hit the van the deer spun around and went under the van. The van was driveable and there weren't any fluids leaking. On our way home that same night when you would get up to 60 miles per hour it would jerk really bad in the transmission. Well when we had the damage on the side of the van fixed we had them look at it. They couldn't find the problem then. We took it back to them again and it was getting worse. They figured out that it mow had a bad torque converter.
2005 Ford Freestar recall I have a 2005 Ford Freestar and didn't know that it had been recalled. I was driving an hour away from my home when coming down an extremely busy offramp the transmission just stopped working. It took me an hour at least to get the van to the side of the road as people were honking and flying down the offramp. I had my two kids with me and they were terrified. I looked up the symptoms of my vehicle and discovered the recall of the torque converter and how it can kill the transmission immediately so I felt confident Ford would help s the van had a recall on the torque converter and I had it towed to phil long in springs, because it quit shifting in the springs, and they told me today it was the transmission. I did research and its doing the same thing all 05 Freestars were doing to get recalled. The guy at the service place also said that it had already been fixed which was not true because I ran the VIN previously ten he tod me it was the whole transmission but I don't trust them. I should still have a new torque converter put in as well right? I called a Ford dealership and the lady who answered the phone said that she doubted my vehicle was recalled but I assured her I had already called and checked so she told me to have it together. I called roadside assistance. When I had the van towed to phil long in colorado springs they were very rude. Initially they didn't want to help but I explained the row truck driver already left it. They asked us to wait I'm the waiting area for quite a while then told us they'd fix the torque converter Thursday. After waiting a week with no transportation they told me they would need 4500 to fix it. I don't know what to do I can't affordable another vehicle or the repairs and it doesn't seem fair that even though this has happened to so many people Ford still profits so much.
Vehicle was once under recall for torque converter but actual problem is water seeping into the pcm. The vehicle suddenly has shifting problems, suddenly loses all power while driving, sometimes won't go into gear at all, and knocks and shudders very intensely while accelerating. The vehicle performs all these while driving or stationary on all streets at all speeds. The problem initially it intermittent and progressively gets worse.
Had the torque converter replaced as per recall at 53692 miles. Two years and 12000 miles later the van lost power on the road. Dealer estimated $1300 to diagnose and $3000 if it is the transmission.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Freestar. While driving in reverse at approximately 5 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle restarted; however, the transmission failed to operate in the desired gear selection until several hours later. The failure recurred on a separate occasion. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the torque converter and transmission would need to be replaced. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 12v006000 (power train). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000. The VIN was unavailable.
My van won't go into reverse and sometimes won't even go into drive. The torque converter was flushed out again after it was supposedly replaced due to recall and is still sputtering and stalling out. They tell me now I need a new transmission at 50k miles another $4k. The van was in the driveway with the health dept. Here to do work and I couldn't get it in reverse to move it for them to put in my septic. After pushing it backward I was able to put it in drive to get around the house' it has not wanted to get out of park at the doctor's office and finally worked with the shifter until it finally went to reverse-backed out-then drive. I was sitting in the middle of a busy lot when it wouldn't go into gear. Took it to Ford and they say I either needed a tcm or a new transmission. Had my van for 2 days before telling me I needed a new transmission. I only paid $5300. For it and they want $4k for a transmission. The van is a 2 owner vehicle and I bought it with 41k miles. Then Ford says that they don't rebuild that transmission-because it is crap and I need a new one. This is not right. Other people have complained of this same thing happening to them. They need to recall this transmission before someone really gets hurt. In driving the van stalls for no reason going 30 to 40mph. People will run you over. My husband is disabled and we can't be worried all the time if the van will get us to the doctor or any place else safely. Now, while the van is in the shop again for another transmission I have no way to transport my husbands scooter to take him to the doctor. The van was bought to transport him and the scooter. Without a reliable van I am screwed! I will never buy a Ford ever again. You need to get on this recall for the tranny. Please help these people like me. Another death trap just like the pinto. . We should be reimbursed for our time and money. It isn't right.

My van had a recall 11s25 for a faulty torque converter. I had it replaced 8/7/2013 with 72690 miles at huff Ford in wytheville, va. It started having the same symptoms last Tuesday. I had it checked at huff Ford in wytheville, va, they could not duplicate the problem, but it continues to "shudder" at different times. When I asked about the torque converter being covered because of the recall I was told there was only a 12 mo 12000 mile warranty. Is that all Ford is required to do for this continuing torque converter/transmission problem? any help would be appreciated. Thanks, kurt.
Vehicle loses power, erratically shifts gears, rpm gauge bounces around and check engine light comes on. I later find that the error code is p1740 (torque converter clutch inductive signature malfunction) after further research I see that there was a recall for this model and year of vehicle for this exact problem yet my specific vehicle is not covered under the recall. I bought this vehicle from a used car dealership and I believe they knew about this problem beforehand and kept it from me, telling me how good and reliable this vehicle is. The vehicle still drives for now but who knows how long and whether any additional damage may be done just by continuing driving it. I bought this because we needed a safe family vehicle and now I'm out all the money I spent on it without enough left to fix it. I obviously can't drive my family around in it and risk it just shutting off in the middle of driving down the road.
I was driving on I 95 south in north carolina over 2 hours from home when the transmission disengaged with no warning. I had to coast to the shoulder and cross one lane of traffic in the process. I am very upset about this because I had 5 children in the van with me at the time. I had to have the vehicle towed to the closest dealership and find my own way home. I researched and found that there is a recall for the torque converter. I called the dealership today and asked if this would be a covered repair because f the recall and they suggested that it would more than likely not be, although they need to diagnose the problem first. The symptoms are consistent with what I have read online for this recall.
On christmas eve 2014 I got into my recently purchased 2005 Ford Freestar minivan to run a short errand. After starting my Freestar I put it in reverse but the vehicle would not move. I tried all the forward gears with the same result, the vehicle would not move. The engine rpm's would go up but no movement. I turned the vehicle engine off and on several time with the same results each time. I had to wait till the day after christmas to contact my local Ford dealership service department and describe my problem. They looked up my VIN number and said that all recalls on my vehicle had been done including the torque converter recall. I then had my Freestar towed to the dealership to investigate the problem. Upon investigation it was determined that water had gotten into my powertrain control module, and that is what was causing the problem. They removed the module and dried it and the connector out then reinstalled it and sealed it. After reinstalling the module they then started the vehicle and were able to shift the vehicle into all the gears and get the transmission to fully function, but now there was a service engine light on. The vehicle now would not idle properly and had a hesitation when trying to accelerate. It was determined after further checks that there were fuel codes coming up and that they were related to the pcm getting wet. It was determined that the powertrain control module (which Ford no longer manufactures) would need to be replaced. To fix the problem it would be a cost of $1000. 00 for a re-manufactured module and reprogramming in addition to the $650. 00 that had already been incurred for the work that had been done so far. Note there had been no problems or issues or engine codes on this vehicle till this problem occurred other than a problem one night with the power door locks not working, which corrected itself after restarting the vehicle.
Pulling out of work parking lot on 12/2/14. Car disengaged from gear and stalled. Pulled vehicle to side of road and attempted restart. Hard starting and stalling. Shifted through all gears. Would not engage reverse. Stalled in dr, 1st and 2nd. Torque converter and transmission recalls for 2004-2005 free stars apparently does not include this Freestar according to lookup website and Ford dealer even though the vehicle is having the same issue. Well taken care of and only 106,000 miles. I'm filing this complaint in hopes of expanding the recall as it obviously applies to my vehicle.
After starting vehicle normally, I put it in drive, but the vehicle would not move forward. It would go in reverse. Mechanic: torque converter, camshaft synchronizer, oil filter. 2nd incident same as 1st. Mechanic: oil pressure switch, engine brain box (programmed at Ford dealership). 3rd incident same. Mechanic: replaced alternator. 4th incident same. Mechanic currently has it. Computer is telling him it's the wiring harness.
After 2 hours of driving, I tried to pass a car on the turnpike, the car made a loud noise and it looked like it went into neutral. Took the car to the shop, they say that the transmission is broken, Ford replaced the torque converter due to the recall on January of 2014, but now they are saying that the issue is not the torque converted, they state that the transmission needs to be rebuilt.
In the beginning (5/21/14), our 2005 Ford Freestar van decelerated to about 35 mph, then stalled 3 times, then wouldn't go in reverse or drive, hard to start after sitting in rain. At first, was told transmission by repair shop, who had rebuilt 6 mos earlier, then said pcm. . After research, found pcm gets wet, had replaced & still at Ford dealer almost 2 mos later. . They replaced torque converter (recall), throttle position sensor (6/19/14) & cam sensor (6/12/14) because "pcm" told them they were bad after we paid for another pcm to be installed. . Dealer ordered shield which we have to pay for. This occurs intermittently, and, noticed after it rains. Service manager now said this morning (7/16/14) he thinks fuses in fuse box by battery on driver side (after we called to let him know wouldn't go in reverse). . He came to our home & couldn't get van to start, after starting, wouldn't go into reverse or drive, stalled again, wouldn't start. We have given him a lot of information, including a you tube video explaining the problem & how to fix, but he does not believe us. Ford needs to recall these as this is a manufacturing defect before someone is killed or injured when vehicle stalls going 70 mph on expressway or maybe they already have, they just weren't aware of the problem. If it stalls on the expressway or going down a hill, the power steering and brakes go out. . Ford issued a TSB in 2004. . . Date reported: December 13 2004 NHTSA reference: #10014086 TSB reference: #042107 description: general (pcm) power train control module programming procedures. Repair information for NHTSA #10014086 date reported: November 01 2004 NHTSA reference: #10013369 TSB reference: #04217.
Last couple of years since the warranty went out, the vehicle seems to be slipping when accelerating from a stop. Dealership won't do anything without us paying a large sum of money to fix it. We have had the torque converter replaced three times. The last time was by the Ford dealership due to the recall. I have seen many similar issues with same make, model, and year on blogs and forums. Would love for Ford to remedy this issue without us having to spend money that we don't have. This is a serious safety issue!!! at a busy intersection, the tranny slipping could easily put one in harms way.
After having the torque converter recall repair done, the vehicle started having minor transmission problems (though I did not recognize them as that at the time). It would be sluggish in shifting, for example. However, eventually this reached the point that at times I could not place the transmission in reverse. I would be stuck until after going back and forth through the transmission, or turning off and restarting the vehicle, it would eventually engage in reverse. Then this started happening in forward gears also. I assumed it was part of the same transmission issues as in the recall (NHTSA engineering analysis #ea09016), but the dealer said no, it was water in the transmission and a separate issue altogether. No-one can explain why this should happen at 70,000 miles. I think this is related to the original issue or the recall repair and should be covered. It seems NHTSA has two other investigations going on this: NHTSA preliminary evaluation #pe09033 and NHTSA preliminary evaluation #pe10033. I want to add this to the data collection, since I think Ford is responsible.
