2 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2014

Water gets into the transmission fluid and the transmission went out - had to be rebuilt for $2656. 76. My mechanic and his tranny repairman found the cause of the water entering the fluid and has now fixed the problem. Ford needs to recall these vehicles and have this issue fixed. I was lucky not to have been in an accident when the transmission failed. This is a definite safety issue and Ford needs to stand behind of their product and the safety of all occupants in the 2005 Ford Freestar sel.

3 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2012

This is an amendment to complaint #10465607 filed yesterday. I was informed today by my dealer, herlong Ford in edgefield, SC, that it is total transmission failure. They stated that they could not tell if the transmission failure is due to the recalled part unless they tear the transmission down completely. This tearing down would be at my expense along with the towing of my vehicle to their dealership from north augusta, SC where it stranded me. The only options I have is tear down and repair or trade. Neither of these options are good for us. We just purchased my husbands truck and we are on a tight budget. I guess we will have to be the ones to take the hit for something that is obvious to anyone who has researched it that Ford is at fault and should be held accountable. I have to have my van for work and personal use. I do not have another vehicle to go to work in. Ford should be made to replace these transmissions completely at their cost. These vehicles are a death trap waiting to happen. It should not take this long to get the repair parts to the dealers. If there is a class action lawsuit out there count us in!! I guess it will take someone dying before anyone makes Ford step up to the plate and be held accountable for their defective vehicles! I was a loyal Ford owner but I am seriously considering changing my preference. Ford do the right thing and help your loyal customers out that bought your vehicle to transport their families in since you advertised it as a family van!! NHTSA needs to do something and fast or we are going to lose faith in the agency to protect us and our families! this many powertrain and torque problems are not a fluke but a very serious problem that needs to be made right. It's not hard to research this year make and model to find hundreds of complaints regarding the minivans shutting down in the middle of traffic! please help us soon!!.

Driving in parking area at 25 mph when there was a sudden and unexpected loss of motive power due to an internal transmission failure. 6 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2011

The minivan has been described by the dealership with transmission failure. The proposed remedy is to completely replace the transmission. We were returning home after driving approximately 1/2 hour at freeway speeds. After exiting the freeway we proceeded to an intersection and stopped at a red traffic signal. When the light turned green and the brake was released and gas pedal pressed, the engine accelerated but the car did not move. We tried all the gears and the car would not move although the engine appeared to be running normally. We feel fortunate that this failure happened at a stop and not at freeway speeds and that the vehicles behind us at the traffic signal did not plow into our rear end. Prior to this incident occurring we had intermittent occasions with the "check engine" light coming on, and then going off. We often were always able to clear the problem by tightening the gas cap while the car was running, which is a common cause for the light to turn on. The vehicle was purchased used from a Ford dealer about 17 months prior to the incident. During that time we noticed occasions of bursts of acceleration when driving at highway speeds. I spoke with the dealer who assured us this was normal. Since the incident, I have come to find out there are thousands of posts on the internet regarding identical problems on the 2005 Ford Freestar, yet no action has been taken. While we came out of this incident safely, I can see how it would cause tragic accidents to occur. In the end, we have an estimate of $4000 for the repair (1/3 of the price we paid for the vehicle after driving the car less than 6000 miles and having it serviced meticulously in the interim). Our household is struggling financially, and we do not have resources for this kind of repair. While we are happy to be uninjured, the economic impact of the flawed transmission is devastating.

Failure Date: 02/05/2011

In 2006 I purchased a 2005 Ford Freestar van used with 23,000 miles on it, and in 2007 the transmission stopped suddenly while I was driving. The 2007 transmission repair cost me approx. $3600. Today 02/05/11, I was driving at 65 mpfh on a 2 lane highway(both lanes going one way) when my van stopped accelerating without warning. I nearly was struck by an 18 wheeler in traffic as I attempted to safely get off the roa, I would have been killed. This is twice a transmission has failed in this vehicle! NHTSA please do something to force Ford motor CO. To be honest about the defective transmissions they put in this vehicle. Please , before someone is killed - perhaps people have already died because of this. Please help me.

Very dangerous!!! no warning signs and was just serviced the week before. Please investigate, as I have found many other complaints on the internet. 18 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2010

Driving on busy freeway in the fast lane at 75mph with cruise control engaged. Suddenly a loud revving sound and dash gauge showed rpms at well above 5,000. Tapped the brake to turn off cruise control, and felt confused because pressing gas pedal resulted in no acceleration but rpms would go through the roof. I was traveling in the fast lane, so I put my right blinker on and thank god was able to safely maneuver over two lanes in heavy and fast-moving traffic and semi-trucks to the right lane. Was also blessed to be on a fairly steeply inclined portion of the freeway, so that I was able to continue coasting enough to take the next freeway exit and turn into a gas station instead of being stranded on freeway shoulder or in the road blocking traffic. Called the nearest Ford dealership, who sent a tow truck to pick up van. I told the service tech what happened and he said that they would examine the car and call me with their diagnosis. Later, they called and said that the transmission was shot, and that they would have no way of knowing what specific part of the transmission failed unless they did more extensive dismantling of the transmission, which would end up costing more money in labor. He said we should just buy a brand new transmission, which would be $3,100. I got online and did a bing search for 2005 Ford Freestar transmission to maybe find the repair cheaper, but instead I found all of these complaints from other Freestar owners. Now, I dont even want another defective transmission put into that van because I will never drive it again, especially with my two young sons in the car. I could have been killed had the car stopped in a hairier traffic situation, like on a railroad track or as I was turning in front of oncoming traffic. I want the blue book trade-in value for this vehicle so that I can buy another vehicle not a Ford. This is a travesty of justice that Ford has been able to get away with letting these defective cars stay out on the road.

19 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2010

I was driving my 2005 Ford Freestar on the garden state parkway in south jersey at 65 miles per hour in the right lane when I realized I could not give the car any gas. The highway has small hills and turns, and I had driven approximately 50 miles prior to this occurrence, driving my son and his friends to school. After pushing the gas pedal, the van did not respond and I began to coast. I pulled the car over to a safe area with my hazard lights flashing. Since the car did not respond after turning it off and starting it again, I placed a called to aaa. As I waited, cars and trucks traveling at full speed past me were a bit alarming. I was towed off the parkway and to a local transmission shop as recommended. After investigation, it was determined that the transmission failed and a new one is being put in the van. This will cost $2300 and leave me without a vehicle for work for almost a week. There was no warning to this occurring. No warning lights were lit up, and incidents such as this had not occurred prior to this.

22 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2010

Driving on highway at approximately 70 miles per hour when without warning the engine had no torque (transmission failed). The engine and other systems in the car were not affected, but the car lost the ability to move forward (or backward) on its own. This happened on a busy highway at night and made for some serious safety concerns.

26 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2010

I was driving along a country road when all of a sudden my 2005 Freestar began to slow down on a corner I stepped on the gas but nothing happened I started to panic it was a blind corner lined with huge trees, fortunately as I was about to come to a stop I started to go down hill and was able to pull of in to a scenic turn out at the lake. I was in a dead zone so I couldn't call on my cell phone but finally found enough service by standing on a rock over the water to text for help. After returning home with the car thanx to aaa I find that this car has a history of transmission failure no warning ,no notice what so ever, I feel very fortunate that this happened where it did because I travel the turnpike daily and could have been run over if it had happened at a more congested area like an on ramp or exchange, I have contacted Ford and they have blown me off,I have also contacted the attorney generals office here in maine to see if I have an recourse in this matter the car has 54154 miles on it and so far I have seen estimates of up to $3000 to repair it shouldn't it last atleast til it's paid for? I think so.

27 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2010

Transmission failure on highway during July 4th holiday weekend. On our way out of st. Louis, we were on a slight incline doing 65 when the rpms ramped up. Cruise control was engaged at the time until my husband taped the brake. Once the cruise was disabled, my husband tried to accelerate, we just continued to slow down. My husband immediately put the hazard lights on and proceeded to coast to an off ramp from highway 61 which in fact turned out to be the on ramp for I-70. We parked on the side of the onramp, turned the van off and started looking for answers. Van runs but it just was not going anywhere. No warning, due to the commotion we lost our bearings so we didn't know for sure where we were to tell the towing company. We ended up being towed to wentzville missouri, dumped off at a super 8 and had to wait til the following day to rent a car. The van was taken to a transmission shop in town. They didn't look at the van until July 6th, they stated the transmission had internal issues. Only option was to replace with refurbished for $2600. Now it's July 9th, had the van towed to our house for $500. Looking for a cheaper transmission since we don't have that kind of money laying around. Not sure yet how we'll proceed.

28 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Freestar. While making a turn driving 15 mph, the transmission failed. The contact attempted to accelerate and the engine revved but the vehicle did not move forward. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that the transmission could not be repaired. The dealer suggested that the contact purchase a refurbished transmission from Ford. The current and failure mileages were approximately 45,000.

Transmission failure 2005 Freestar - 49000 miles.

31 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2010

I am filing this complaint on my 2005 Ford Freestar. Two days ago without warning the transmission failed. The van only has 75,000 miles on it. While driving down the road the van just lost power. This is a very dangerous situation and could have been much worse (caused an accident). I have researched the issue and have found thousands of complaints of this problem with Ford Freestars. It is currently at the dealership and will cost approx. $3000. 00 to fix. This unacceptable for such a new vehicle and seems to be very common for this make and model.

32 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2010

Accelerating onto the interstate and the transmission failed without warning. Fortunately I had enough acceleration to pull off to the side of the road. Was at the Ford dealership the week before for routine oil change and maintenance check at which time they told me transmission fluid checked out fine and was told it would be good for another 10,000 miles. Transmission only has 66,500 miles on it currently. Have done routine maintenance regularly on vehicle at same dealership since we bought it new with less than 100 miles on it in 2005.

33 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2010

No sign of transmission problems prior to the actual transmission failure. Wife was driving herself and kids to school while I was away on business travel and as she was driving in a 40mph zone, she suddenly noticed that the van was slowing down even though the engine was revving high. Since she was driving on a 2-lane road that had no shoulders, she pulled the van as close to the curb as she could even though the van was still causing traffic problems. Wife turned the engine off, restarted the engine, tried to put the van in drive, reverse, 1st and 2nd but all of these attempts failed to make the van move in any direction. After the local Ford dealer refused to assist my wife, who was alone with the kids when the transmission failed, she was able to contact a local mechanic that assisted with towing the disabled van to his shop. Upon analyzing the problem, the mechanic noticed that there were parts of the transmission laying at the bottom of the transmission. The mechanic removed the original transmission and replace it with a remanufactured, Ford unit. Other work performed by the mechanic included flushing all cooler lines and cooler prior to installation. The final cost for parts and labor for the re-manufactured transmission was $2990. 23.

34 Transmission Failure problem

35 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2010
