1 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2016

In motion and in drive on state route 309 the vehicle suddenly and without warning lost all ability to move. We had myself, my husband, my three daughters (17, 10, and 1) plus our new born son in the vehicle. The vehicle had to be coasted to a near by gas station but not before being very close hit in the back by a semi truck. The vehicle was placed in park, then drive again to see if the vehicle would go into gear. The vehicle failed to go into gear. The other gears on the vehicle were tested only to confirm the vehicle would not go into any gear or move. At this time Ford corperate had been contacted and they suggested we pay to have it towed to the nearest Ford repair garage. (we has just got the vehicle back 4 days prior to the inability to move, to have a power train sensor they diagnosed as bad because the power train light had been blinking and the vehicle had been jerking when put into drive. ) unable to have the vehicle towed to Ford, due to lack of funds from the previous week, we had to push the vehicle home.

2 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2015

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Freestar. While driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle restarted, but would not shift into gear. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The VIN was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 192,000.

3 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2012

While driving my transmission is sticking and jerking. After it does that it shuts off in the middle of the road. A couple of months ago I took it to the dealer and they said it wasn't the recalled part and it cost me $800. 00 to repair. Ever since then it has still been having little jerking and sticking issues. Today, July 13, 2012, it shut off again in the middle of one of the busiest intersections in north augusta, south carolina just like the last time. This is the fourth time that I have almost been in a wreck in my minivan because it just shuts off without warning you. I think I have been patient enough waiting on recall parts for my van. Right now I wouldsay that my van is a hazard to drive. The not changing of gears can and has happened at a variety of speeds, even at 35. Everyone with this van should be put in a rental vehicle at the expense of Ford until repair parts are available. I need my vehicle for work and personal.

4 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2012

Driving home from the gas station when suddenly the van stopped accelerating. We were going approximately 25 mph at the time. We were at a very busy intersection so we had to get out of the way quickly but the van would not go into gear. Any gear for that matter. We pushed the van out of the way because the intersection is high in traffic especially with 18 wheelers. The transmission fluid level was where it should have been. We couldn't get the van going so we had to get it towed home. We had no prior problems with the van going in or out of gear before this incident.

5 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2011

The van would not shift into gears. It had to be towed to Ford dealership service center. They said transmission is burnt (they couldn't figure out what caused it) and need to replace the entire transmission which would cost $3300. The van has been serviced regularly at local Ford dealership oil changes, check ups etc. . And it has less than 60k miles. And now they are telling me I have to replace the entire transmission suddenly? I researched this issue online and there are countless people filing complaints and claims and law suits with this transmission issue. I can't believe Ford makes transmission that doesn't even last 60k miles and they want customers to pay for the replacement? there should have been a recall or some kind of warranty cover for this. It's a nonsense! never buying Ford ever again.

6 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2011

On September 21, 2011 I noticed that my 2005 Ford Freestar was hesitating when I pulled out of a parking spot in front of my home. I was able to get to my final destination, a local supermarket, without incident but could tell that the car was not shifting gears as smoothly as I was accustomed to. On the return trip home, upon merging onto the expressway I typically take, my Freestar's engine began to sputter then immediately shut down. All power to the engine was lost. Power steering was lost as well making the car impossible to maneuver. The electrical system completely shut down and I was forced to come to a complete stop, shift into park and reengage the ignition. From that point on, until I arrived home, the Freestar would not shift beyond second gear. If I made an attempt to accelerate, again the engine would sputter and all power to the engine, power steering and electrical systems would shut down completely. I managed to get home that day by stopping and restarting my Freestar what I can only estimate to be 50 to 75 times. The most harrowing part of this experience was the lost of power and control without warning. Prior to this day, I had never experienced anything remotely like this with the Freestar, and then from one day to the next, I was helpless on the expressway expecting a fatal collision with an unsuspecting driver.

7 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2011

Last Saturday, July 23, 2011, my husband was driving our 2005 Ford Freestar (just over 86,000 miles) in reverse. He stopped, put it into drive and it would not go into gear. Not reverse, not drive, not first or third--nothing. Fortunately he was able to get it pushed into a parking stall and out of the road. Upon looking online to find out information regarding a transmission warranty, he discovered that many, many other people have had this same problem with '04 and '05 Freestars and that Ford's only response is to replace the defective part with another same, defective part. We were not hurt in any way, but it won't be long before someone is on a freeway or in an intersection and is involved in a serious--maybe even fatal--accident because their transmission is suddenly no longer functional. Ford needs to recognize this oversight and recall all '04 and '05 Ford Freestars. We have not been able to get the vehicle to a mechanic as of yet, but will be doing so this week. Cost of repair: unknown.

8 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2011

My wife was taking my kids to school when she pulled out of our drive way and drove about a 1/2 mile and the car just stopped going forward. She tried pushing the gas and they engine just revs up. Luckily a neighbor was coming up and took her home. We you start the car it will not go into gear. It won’t go in drive or reverse. We have not had any transmission problem up until this point.

9 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2011

I was driving my 2005 Ford Freestar van to work. My trip to work was just like any other day. No problems and worry free. I was at work pulling into my parking place and it was just like someone had put the vehicle in neutral. The vehicle will not move in any gear, or in any direction. This has been an issue for many people now including myself.

10 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

11 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2010

2005 Ford Freestar - 2nd transmission failure. In March 2009 the transmission went out on our 2005 Freestar. No warning, like all others with problems, it was like it was in neutral & would not go into gear. Service tech informed us that 2005 Freestars have transmission issues/torque problems. Our warranty had expired, & we had to pay $3200 for new transmission. Complaint was filed with NHTSA. Thankfully, we purchased a warranty w/ the new transmission - because it has gone out again! van has been sitting at Ford dealership for over two weeks now, waiting on Ford's approval to replace transmission for 2nd time, due to same problem. I don't understand why Ford will not address this issue, or at the very least, repair the transmissions that are failing at no cost. I strongly encourage everyone to not purchase another Ford, I know I won't. Class action lawsuits have been mentioned, I would definitely be interested in participating in one! I guess Ford is not going to do anything until someone dies in a horrific crash due to this problem.

12 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2010

While driving at highway speed, it felt like the transmission went into neutral. The engine will rev and is able to be shifted into another gear, but doesn't move. There was no warning - no light or bell, no noises, no smells. We were forced to pull off the road and coast to a safe place with our 2 children in the car. There are approximately 80,000 miles on the vehicle. We have yet to repair the vehicle as it just occurred.

13 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2010

While driving my daughter home from dance class, the vehicle completely lost power - the engine was still running but the car would not engage in any gear. I had to coast to the side of the road and call for a tow truck. The transmission has completely failed and needs to be replaced.

14 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2010

2005 Freestar 4. 2 after normal start up the transmission did not engage into gear. Transmission shop has the vehicle and is still providing repair estimate. No problems or indication prior. Maintenance completed regularly.

15 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

2005 Ford Freestar-sudden transmission failure at highway speed. No prior warning, no knocking or sound, just a total disengagement of any gears. Vehicle still ran but could not engage any gears. It acted as if it were in neutral. This happened on an interstate and fortunately I was able to stop the vehicle prior to going over a long bridge. After reading on the internet, this has happened to countless others and I found out that an investigation was launched over a year ago by the NHTSA. My family and I were lucky that I was able to stop prior to the bridge. I then had to have the vehicle towed about 40 miles and found out this morning that it was the transmission converter and pump shaft which will cost about $2,000 to repair.

16 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2010

I was driving my 2005 Freestar(Ford) on the beltway at 55mph when suddenly it stopped moving. The engine kept running but it would not go into gear. There is nothing wrong with the shifting hardware- it seems to be a transmission issue with absolutely no warning, no slipping, no noise and no warning light. Very frightening since I had to be towed from the beltway.

17 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2010

While driving my 2005 Ford Freestar Mini-van, the vehicle suddenly and instantly lost power and coasted to a stop. The engine continued to run, but the transmission would not engage in any gear. In order to correct the problem, I had to purchase another transmission. I purchased a transmission from an "after-market" parts manufacturer, as it was slightly less expensive than a new transmission from Ford and was warranted, while Ford's was not.

18 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2010

February 2010- van lurched forward then failed to shift into gear. Less than 65000 miles on vehicle. Turned out to be transmission failure- Ford stated it would cost $3100 to fix. Got it fixed at a local repair shop for $1800. Mechanic stated he sees this often with this year of Freestars. In February 2011, car started having powertrain issues, skipping and slipping gear. Diagnosed as cam shaft sensor failure. Cost was over $400 to fix. Stated water was getting into the cam shaft. In July 2011, car had issues in rain- again, water in cam shaft. Mechanic drained it and it appeared to be better. December 29th, 2011 van lurched forward and would not go into gear. Was traveling 65mph and had no warning. Was stuck on busy highway in the middle of crosslane. Mechanic stated the transmission was dead at 130,000 miles- after only having had the last one for less than two years. We consumers bought these Freestars in good faith that we would have a safe, reliable vehicle. Ford has failed to deliver. I have found several other Freestar consumers stating the same complaints on websites nationwide. Ford claims "no record of failure" because they overcharge on their repairs so we end up going to local shops for fixes- I doubt they bother logging it since we won't pay them to fix it! after coasting the car into an abandoned lot, I was stuck. There was a shed that was clearly used by drug addicts (clothes, trash, needles, etc inside. ) the company should stand by their vehicles- I believe if they drove these vans they would know how terrified I and other Freestar drivers are to even think about the "what-if's" that could have occurred because of their transmission failures. I am stuck because I would never risk driving the vehicle again but cannot sell it because it could put someone else in danger. My childrens' lives far outweigh the dollar amount left on the loan of this junk!.

19 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2009

While exiting the pearlridge shopping mall parking garage in pearl city, hawaii, my van completely lost power. As I drifted to the stop light I tried to shift into another gear to see if I possibly had some other gear to go into so that I may pull out of traffic. After trying for a few seconds I realized that I could not move the van and had to get out and push. I had to attempt to move the van while traffic was passing on both sides of me. Luckily, a motorist stopped and he and another guy assisted me in getting my vehicle back to the parking structure safely. With a vehicle just quitting in the middle of a busy road like this one I was at risk of being rear ended which would have lead to a sever accident that would have involved myself, my aunt and my two young daughters along with the occupants of the striking car. I was also at risk while trying to clear the vehicle from the roadway before an accident could possibly occur. I bought the van used in 2007 and received a full transmission service before I took the vehicle home. This was done at 46000 miles and now that I am at 84k this major problem has occurred. I believe I am supposed to have the transmission serviced every 50k miles so I am still good with the fluid. I took it to the Ford dealer and I was informed that it would cost me in the neighborhood of $4700 to get the vehicle repaired by using a remanufactured transmission which was possibly fixed from having the same problem as I have. With all of the posted complaints from people who has and are still having the same problem as I am, I find it hard just to sit back and shell out this amount of money when it seems to be a much larger problem than just that of one van.

20 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

21 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

22 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2008

Yesterday, 12/7/08, I pulled out of a parking space, switched gear from reverse to forward and applied gas. Other than revving of engine, nothing happened. It would not engage any gears. I had the vehicle towed to a repair shop today and they referred me to a transmission shop. I contacted the Ford dealership where I purchased the vehicle and they were unable to help as the vehicle was out of warranty. 2005 Ford Freestar transmission failure at 51,000 miles (December 7, 2008) should be recognized as failure of reasonable assurance of functionality of vehicle.

23 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2008

While driving at 55 mph in rush hour traffic on way home from hospital with my four year old son and wife vehicle started bucking and jerking no power. Tachometer was fluctuating back and forth got vehicle back home and called Ford roadside assistance to come tow it. Dealer replaced sensor part # 1f1z-7m101-aa told us all okay. 24 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2008

2005 Ford Freestar just dies. First incident happened February 28, 2008. Was stopped at a stop sign and made it about halfway through intersection when everything shut off. Coasted to the other side and pulled to the right. Restarted the van and made it another 50 feet before it died again. Tried a third time and it would not go into any gear. Luckily was in a residential neighborhood. Called tow truck and local Ford dealership (mckie Ford, rapid city, sd). Service technician said the transmission needed to be replaced, parts would be in sometime on Monday (3/3/2008). They completed the repair on Tuesday afternoon. Today (3/10/2008), the same exact issue occurred. Called tow and local Ford dealer. Waiting to hear what Ford has to say this time. Doing some research on the web, there are hundreds of people with Freestars that have had to same issue. Each has a similar story of having to replace the transmission (usually at their cost). Many of whom are looking at having a class action lawsuit created against Ford for a known defect that has gone unresolved (to the point where they outright lie about knowing the parts are faulty). I know I'm not the first to complain here, and I know I will not be the last.

25 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2008

I was accelerating after being stopped at a stoplight. Suddenly my van begin to rev up over 500 rpms and had lost all power. Thankfully I was not in traffic and was able to pull over easily. The transmission was completely dead- it would not kick into any gears and I had to have it towed to the local Ford dealership for repair. The vehicle has only 42, 500 miles on it.

26 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2007

I returned home from work in order to drop off a few things before continuing on to do some shopping. I placed the vehicle into park and exited the van leaving the ignition on with the engine running. After unloading my items I decided not to go shopping and went out to turn off the van. While standing outside of the vehicle I opened the drivers door and reached into the van to turn off the ignition. In the process of reaching for the ignition switch I nudged the shift leaver and the transmission shifted into reverse. The vehicle began moving backward down my driveway trapping me in between the open door and the van. I was unable to make any attempts to stop the vehicle since it was moving too quickly. I held onto the steering wheel while being dragged down my driveway, across the grass and into some trees and bushes. The van door struck a tree bending the door back. At that time I fell under the van and the front drivers side tire ran over my legs, up my torso and across my chest. The van continued on and came to a rest at the bottom of my neighbors yard. I was transported to the hospital by ambulance. I suffered contusions to the abdominal wall, legs and chest in addition to a cut to my left ankle. After the vehicle was repaired my husband had the van check by a Ford dealer. They determined there was nothing faulty with the safety mechanism, which does not allow the gear shifter unless the brake pedal is pressed. However, we have been able to shift the vehicle out of park into reverse without pressing the brake pedal several times since the initial failure.
