1 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that the throttle body failed and had to be repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced several instances of surging forward when idling or coming to a stop. The dealer cleaned and reprogrammed the throttle. The VIN was not available. The failure and current mileages were 100,000. Updated 09/07/2012.

2 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2011

On three separate occasions, I have experienced surging forward and also surging in reverse at after shifting from park and from reverse. I have been able to control these surges with the brake and have not had any accidents. There is only 34000 miles (2006 Ford Freestyle) and have not taken it to a dealer yet , as I have parked it at home. I have researched this problem and have seen that a NHTSA investigation #pe11018 is pending. I would like to report this also and would like to know what is to be done with this.

3 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2011

I have a 2006 Ford Freestyle. Today as I turned into a parking spot, the vehicle lunged forward and stalled when I pressed down on brake. It would then stall everytime the car was put into drive or reverse. Vehicle has since been towed to korner Ford 805 w. Genesee st, syracuse NY. 13204. I do not know what the final verdict will be but having read some of the discussions on-line, it sounds exactly like what has been happening to other Freestyle owners.

4 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2011

2006 Ford Freestyle "lurches" at low speeds or when sitting still; into reverse or forward gears; especially when it is hottest out. Example: sitting in line to pick up our children (carpool lane) at the school; vehicle in park. Once you move the transmission into drive, while holding down the brake pedal, the engine will rev (run higher) and the vehicle will try to move, therby causing it to 'lurch' or jump foward. It is not a consistent thing, however it does seem to happen the most when the engine and transmission are hot. Also happens when switching from park to reverse. Often, it will cause the 'wrench' icon on the dashboard to turn on. Placing the vehicle in park then turning it off; and turning it back on seems to correct the issue, temporarily. However, it does haappen 3 to 4 times a week.

5 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2011

Trying to park my car in a crowded parking lot, the car suddenly surged forward and then stalled. I tried to restart the car and it would not start. I waited a minute, turned off the radio, a/c, etc and then was able to restart. I have had a similar problem on two other occasions since.

6 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2011

Drove car about 10 miles, no problems. Sat in parking lot for about 10 minutes idling, outdoor temperature about 90 degrees. Put car in reverse, engine surged and car died. Took three tries to get car to start and the wrench light came on. Was able to begin driving, however the car did not seem to accelerate, even with pedal pushed to the floor. On the way home, engine would "herky/jerk" a little, but did begin to accelerate better and get up to speed. Turned off car in driveway and started a little later to take to garage to get checked. Car started easily this time, and the wrench light was off. Absolutely no issues on way to the garage. Will find out tomorrow what, if anything garage tells me. This problem seems to be similar to other issues described in internet search.

7 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2011

2006 Ford Freestyle will accelerate, or lunge forward, when brake is engaged while in drive.

8 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2011

Purchased a used 2006 Ford Freestyle in July of 2010. A few weeks after we bought it the car started lurching forward and backward when brakes were applied. It is really bad when the ac is running. At first I thought my wife was crazy but then it started to get really bad and I noticed that when backing out of the garage, after putting it in reverse and letting off the gas, that the car would just propel itself backwards. Took the car into the dealer today and was quoted $850 to fix the throttle body which is what they are saying is causing the problem. After reading about all of the other people having the same problems with this particular vehicle I was stunned to find out that Ford has not issued a recall on this. This is definitely a safety issue. If myself or my wife were to get in an accident due to this fault you could bet your bottom dollar I would file a lawsuit against Ford.

9 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact was driving 35 mph when the vehicle stalled and became resistant to acceleration attempts. The check engine and transmission warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to immediately restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 69,000.

10 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that the vehicle would surge while in drive or reverse. The failure became progressively worse and the vehicle would intermittently stall when the brakes were applied. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 67,000. The current mileage was 69,000.

11 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2011

I own a 2006 Ford Freestyle. I have experienced the sudden accelerlation that the agency is investigating. I would like to participate in this investigation.

12 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly lunged forward. The failure occurred at different speeds and while driving in reverse. In addition, the vehicle would stall while depressing the brake pedal and the engine would exhibit a lose of power while accelerating. The failures occurred intermittently and with time became constant. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostics, where the technicians stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. There was an open investigation under NHTSA action number pe11018 (vehicle speed control) that may be related to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

13 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2011

The last month, the car has been lunging forward when the a/c is on and my foot is on the brake. It has lunged backward when pulling out of parking spaces and forward when it is at a complete stop. The wrench came on and he car stalled at a drive thru and drove very slow after restarting. The car was taken to the dealer for a diganostic.

14 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2011

Vehicle will after being put in drive from park will surge, it will rev to 4000 rpm and then die. Have nearly hit a pedestrian due to this problem as well as surging nearly into a car stopped in front of me. This is dangerous. I have the car in the dealer right now, says that it's the throttle body assembly which is going to cost us over 1000. 00 to fix. By reading all these complaints listed on the NHTSA website this is a big problem with this model. Please issue a recall or technical service bulletin in order to force Ford into fixing this issue. There is apparantly a nationwide shortage of throttle bodies due to the issue being so wide spread so that has to tell you something about how widespread this problem is. Does someone have to die or get injured in order to get this issue fixed.

15 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2011

While driving the car lost power and quit in traffic. This is the 2nd time in two years this problem has happened. The 1st was in 2009 and was told by Ford dealership that the throttle body needed replaced. Now on 6-4-11 the car is doing the same thing, again the dealership told me it needed yet another throttle body. This is a safety issue we were in downtown traffic when the car quit,we could have been in an accident because of this!.

16 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2011

I purchased used 2006 Ford Freestyle in February 2011. Its been two months. I am having problems of acceleration when my foot is not on the pedal, it speeds up and have to hit the brakes. Also, my wrench light goes and and engine light is now on. Dealer today states need new throttle body $800. I just drove it off the lot 2 months ago.

17 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2011

2006 Ford Freestyleis having an acceleration problem. I first noticed it in the morning one I put it in reverse and had my foot on the brake the car would wand to go by itself. As it get hotter the problem occurs more. Then in 2010 the ac went out and I spent $1100 in reparis. The problem didn't occur to often in the winter however in the past month the car now accelerates forward and backward. It also accelerates when you are driving. This had not happen before. Today I was drving on a very busy street when the car lunge and then died. I started the car again and it would go very slow as if it had lost power. It turned off 3 more times and then as I pressed the gas the wrench light came on. I called the dealer and will be taking it in. However, this has been an ongoing problem and as I think about all the incidents over the past year, it seems this may be a problem that is esclated by the air condition and when temperatures rise. I have own many Fords and this has never happened with one of them. I think this may be a serious defect that should be recalled.

18 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2011

2006 Ford Freestyle lunging started about 2 months ago. It happens often, thought it was just when I ran the air conditioner but it is happening all the time now. It will happen when the car is going forward and in reverse and sometimes it will die on me. I've already heard of this problem being responsible for 1 injury and I'm afraid it could continue happen to other Freestyle owners including myself. I should not have to pay for this problem. Ford needs to own up to the fact that this is their fault and recall all Freestyles made within 2006-2007. As I am researching this problem with the Freestyle I am becoming aware that Ford has known about this issue for some time now and have not done anything about it. If this is how they are going to make vehicles and treat their customers then I can assure you that most of their costumers will choose to go elsewhere with their business, including myself! they need to recall this model and fix it!!!! I am at 65,000 milles and this is unacceptable to me and every other owner out there. !!! please do something about this mess.

19 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2011

I would like to file a complaint about our 2006 Ford Freestyle. Our vehicle has the cvt transmission and has started reving and jolting forward when I place the car in drive, reverse or even when I come to a stop. I have noticed since I have started using the air conditioning that the problem has gotten more frequent and more powerful. I have been sitting at a drive-thru and almost hit the car in front of me because my car jolted forward. I am afraid I am going to end up hitting another vehicle or someone if the problem continues or gets worse.

20 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2011

My 2006 Ford Freestyle surges and or accelerates after it is put in gear with my foot on the brake. This happen both in forward(drive) and reverse. This has been an ongoing problem for at least since 2009.

21 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2011

My 2006 Ford Freestyle lurches forward when I take my foot off the brake. Generally happens when idling and only in warm weather. It actually jumps forward and have to press my foot all the down on the brake hard to try to control it. I never get close behind anyone for fear of jumping into them. I've so far not had any accidents although have had many close calls, including almost running into pedestrians crossing a parking lot. Very very scary. Sometimes the car will stall after a huge lurch. I took it into Ford 2 years ago to explain but they said nothing was wrong with it. I beg to differ on that.

22 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2011

Our 2006 Ford Freestyle lunges when your foot is not even on the accelerator.

23 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph the vehicle wouldn't shift gears and then it stalled. The wrench and the traction control warning light also illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they advised her that she needed to replace the transmission. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000. The VIN was unavailable.

24 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

Ford free style 2006 surges.

25 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2011

I was driving down the road last week and heard a big metallic sounding bang. My husband found metal parts in the road. I now have a whole in my transmission and a gear fell out of it. Still waiting to hear from the mechanic how much the repairs will cost. The car has been well maintained.

26 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2010

We own a 2006 Ford Freestyle. Were driving the car 700 miles from home when the wrench light started going on/off. We were entering a freeway on-ramp when the throttle disengaged and we were forced to coast to the side of the road and call for assistance - thankfully we were able to do it safely. We had it towed to a Ford dealership in san leandro, CA, and had to rent a car to get home. After about 1. 5 weeks we were told there was significant metal damage in the transmission and it would cost us $6200 to replace it. The vehicle only has 47,100 miles on it. From what we've read, this is a major problem with the Freestyle and needs to be seriously addressed by Ford.

27 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2010

My 2006 Ford Freestyle's accelerator pedal stuck to the floor on 3 different occasions. After shifting to neutral and pulling over, I finally realized that tapping the pedal would release it. The dealer "could not duplicate the problem". Shortly after the engine light went on, the "wrench" light came on. When the last light went on, the car would surge forward on its own. I have read numerous accounts of this problem and in those cases, there was no satisfaction. It is very frightening to have no control over the acceleration of your vehicle especially when 5 children are with you.

28 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2010

The car began to jerk and lurch, and engine speed abruptly slowed after about (3) hours of highway driving (from vermont to new hampshire). A trouble light (wrench icon) appeared. Engine rpms fluctuated, but vehicle would not respond to the gas pedal. Pulled over, waited a few minutes, restarted the car. Trouble light was no longer on, and the vehicle was fine and normal for the rest of the ride home. Brought car to portsmouth Ford, who could not find any problem. Second incident, January 2011: highway drive back to new hampshire from connecticut. Same problem. Abrupt and alarming drop in car speed. No throttle control. Erratic engine rpm performance. Attempted to pull off interstate highway to a safe area. Waited 5 minutes. Re-started the engine. Trouble light gone, engine performed fine, and no issue the rest of the trip. Brought the car for transmission service to valvoline, then to dowling Ford where the vehicle was purchased. Third incident, March 2011: after (2) hours of highway driving abrupt drop in engine speed while attempting to merge on interstate 84. Lost throttle control. Near collision with a tractor-trailer in bad weather while trying to get out of the way and off the highway. Frightening experience. Brought car to bob thomas Ford in hamden, connecticut for a transmission program update and complete transmission service. Dealer could not find a problem with the vehicle. Fourth incident, June 24, 2011: again on I-84 in the rain after 2. 5 hours of highway cruising. Radical loss of engine power and vehicle speed. My daughter barely avoided a collision attempting to maneuver off the highway in heavy traffic with erratic throttle control. Daughter called me in a panic, crying. Waited off the highway a few minutes, re-started, and was fine. Car no longer used on the highway, just locally. The consumer also stated the alternator failed. Updated portable 08/23/11.

29 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2010

Wrench lite came on show a problem with transmission. The vehicle only had 62,000 miles. Took to Ford dealership was told the transmission needs to be rebuild. Which would cost $5,100. On September 12 the transmission went out. Vehicle with only 62,000 mile should not have transmission problems.

30 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2010

My Ford Freestyle 2006 the transmission cvt is broken, I have warranty but they said this particular transmission is out of warranty and the dealer Ford said the cost the new transmission is 6000.

31 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2010

2006 Ford Freestyle transmission problem. My car has 110k miles and I was informed that I need an new transmission. I was driving on the interstate and my car lost power. It wouldn't go fast enough to be considered a safe driving speed on the interstate. I haven't had it repaired yet because I can't afford it. This issue should be a recall.

32 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2010

I had the classic throttle body issue, with the surging in reverse and drive, then the car dying. The car would also go "limp" from time to time, with no acceleration. I had the throttle body replaced, but the very day I got my car back, it continued to go "limp", with the transmission light coming on. It did it once in the middle of a major highway intersection, and another time on a country 2-lane road with a speeding truck behind me. Both times, my life was endangered. Now, Ford says I need a new transmission!!.

33 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2010

Brakes were compressed due to sudden stop in car in front of us during traffic. Check engine light came on and car revved to ~4000 rpm and was very unresponsive to compression of gas pedal. This has occurred 3 more times over the past month; each time the car must be turned off and then upon restarting everything seems to be fine again. We have now taken the car to our local Ford dealer and they tell us it is a problem with the cvt and will cost $5200 to replace.

34 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2010

I have had the transmission in my 2006 Ford Freestyle replaced twice. Now it is surging(lunging). I have researched and found lot of other are doing the same - Ford is calling for the throttle to be replaced but that does not always solve the problem. I believe it is time for an investigation of this problem. So for I have been lucky and not had an accident with this problem.

35 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The vehicle was stopped with the contact depressing the brakes as the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact applied abrupt pressure to the brakes and was able to stop the unintended acceleration. The wrench and engine service warning lights illuminated during the failure. The contact shut off the vehicle and when restarting, it resumed normal operation. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where they were unable to diagnose the failure. The failure recurred while the contact was driving with the cruise control set at approximately 65 mph. The entire dashboard illuminated during the failure. The contact shut off the vehicle and when restarting, the vehicle resumed as normal for approximately one hour until the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was advised that there was a malfunction within the transmission control. The vehicle was then taken to an authorized dealer where she was advised that the transmission would need replacing. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 41,000.
