Service Brakes Problems of Ford Fusion Hybrid - part 1

I own a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. The vehicle has a recurring loss-of-braking problem associated with the abs/ advancetrak system. While driving, the vehicle can suddenly lose normal braking ability and does not stop as it should when I press the brake pedal. The abs, advancetrak, traction control/hydroplaning and other warning lights illuminate at the same time. I have had to use the emergency/parking brake to help stop the vehicle. The exact underlying component causing the failure is unknown. The abs module/ abs hydraulic control unit (hcu) has been diagnosed and replaced more than once, and the vehicle has also been repeatedly reprogrammed and diagnostic codes cleared. The vehicle has been inspected by three different Ford dealerships for the same recurring problem. The dealerships have performed diagnostic work and repairs, including replacement of abs-related components. Most recently, 1 paid approximately $1,600 to a Ford dealership for an abs-related repair. I was told the vehicle was repaired and picked it up on [10-6-26]. Less than 24 hours later, while driving, the vehicle again lost normal braking ability. The same warning lights appeared, including abs and service advancetrak, and I again had to use the emergency/parking brake to stop. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The recurring loss of braking creates a serious safety risk to me and other road users because the vehicle may not stop normally when the brake pedal is applied. I have not had a crash or injury from this failure, but I have had to take emergency action to avoid one. The warning lights and symptoms have occurred repeatedly before and after repairs. Previous Ford dealerships have diagnosed and attempted to repair the problem, but the failure continues to return. The most recent failure occurred less than 24 hours after the last repair.

While driving my 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid (VIN: [xxx]), the braking system suddenly failed. When applying the brake pedal, there was completely zero brake resistance, and the vehicle failed to engage proper braking power, creating an extremely hazardous driving condition. The vehicle was inspected by a certified Ford dealership (lithia), which officially documented that the vehicle is "unsafe to drive due to having no brake resistance. " the diagnostics confirmed that the abs hydraulic control unit (hcu), the abs module, and the brake master cylinder have failed and require total replacement. The dealership also noted that the necessary braking parts are currently completely unavailable (backordered/no parts available). This is the exact same safety defect covered under Ford's previous safety recall 19s54 (NHTSA campaign 19v904) for older fusion models. However, the recall was never expanded to include the 2012 models, despite them using the same problematic braking infrastructure and experiencing identical catastrophic failures. Nhtsa needs to investigate and force Ford to expand the recall to 2011-2012 models before this braking defect causes fatal accidents. I own a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and am reporting a recurring and serious braking problem. On xxx, while driving to pick up my mom and my [xxx] son, I pressed the brake pedal to stop, but the vehicle did not stop normally. I repeatedly tried to brake, but the vehicle took much longer to stop than it should have. The brake pedal became spongy and did not have normal resistance. The brake, abs, and advancetrac warning lights appeared. The vehicle’s computer/system was reset afterward, and the vehicle drove normally for several days. On xxx, the same braking problem happened again while I was driving to go pick up my [xxx] son from school. The brake pedal became spongy, and repeatedly pumping the brakes did not properly stop the vehicle. This time I had to use the emergency/parking brake to help bring the vehicle to a stop. The same brake, abs, and advancetrac warning lights appeared. After this incident, the rear brakes were replaced and a new abs anti-lock brake pump (part number 9e58-2c555-af) was installed. The computer/system was also reset again. On xxx, the brake, abs, and advancetrac warning lights came back on again despite the new brake components and computer reset. The mechanic who performed the repairs has been unable to determine the cause, so the vehicle is being taken to another repair shop for further diagnosis. I am concerned that this may be a safety defect involving the braking/abs system of the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. The vehicle has experienced an actual loss of braking ability, including an incident where I had to use the emergency/parking brake to stop. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this issue. There have been many recalls on the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, according to Ford mine has already had the repairs done yet the issues I’ve been having all match recalls. I’ve had issues with my passenger seat, the air bag system light is always on and the seat controls no longer work. The clockspring system is pure trash, there is no reason I’ve had to replace it twice now in the 2 months I’ve had this car. My abs system keeps going in and out and says service advancetrac system. My hybrid battery rarely goes into hybrid anymore causing my mpg to drop. There were a few other things but that’s what’s coming out mind now.

However, physical inspection of the vehicle proves that the mandatory federal remedy was never executed. The master cylinder still retains the original factory dot 3 cap, and the system was never upgraded to dot 4 fluid. Because the servicing dealership falsified the repair documentation and left the corrosive dot 3 fluid in the system, my vehicle has now suffered the exact catastrophic safety failure the recall was meant to prevent. The abs hydraulic control unit (hcu) internal valves have seized. The brake pedal is heavily compromised, and the vehicle is an active, severe safety hazard to drive. I am the second owner of this vehicle. I unknowingly purchased a car with a fraudulently cleared safety defect. Because this failure is a direct result of an incomplete federal safety recall remedy, I demand that Ford corporate reopen this VIN file under "related damage / incomplete remedy. " I require Ford 1. Arrange a complimentary tow to a certified Ford dealership. 2. Replace the ruined abs/hcu module entirely free of charge. 3. Perform the mandatory dot 4 pressure flush and install the correct reservoir cap. 4. Provide a complimentary rental car while this safety hazard is being resolved. I have taken photographic and video evidence of the dot 3 cap and the failed braking system to support my legal claims. Fairway Ford of yorba claimed it had already been done when clearly it hasn't and pushed it off like nothing.

Abs module failed.

The chrome trim on the parking brake switch started chipping. The sharp edge drew a drop of blood and small pieces attached to your fingers. Replaced the switch in June 2026.

This failure could put drivers, passengers, and others on the road at serious risk. I request that NHTSA investigate this issue for potential recall action to protect the safety of drivers nationwide.

Brake lights stay on even after turning off car. According to my research the problem is a brake pedal bumper that deteriorated. I actually found the rubber piece on the floor. Prior to finding out my brakes remained on, the red engine light turned on. I checked recalls for this problem, and there was one, but it was only valid for high humidity states. I live in California so I didn't qualify. Now, due to not knowing what the red light was about, and it being smog time, I cleared the engine light. Well, I didn't know that disqualifies my smog test because other codes were erased. Now I have a car that is battery disconnect since I can't drive it due to not smog certified. All because of a rubber brake part falling off. I?called my dealer if it was covered by recall, they said no, even though there is a recall for humid areas. I don't live in a humid area. I had the airbag replaced because of the takata recall. The following week, I started the car and warning lights came on. Thankfully, I was in a parking lot that had some empty spaces. I applied the brakes and realized I had none. The brake went to the floor and nothing. I had to use the emergency brake to stop the car. I then steered to a parking space and applied the emergency brake to stop the car again. I had to have the car towed to the Ford place. They said it had nothing to do with the airbag repair, but I can't get over how there was no warning of the problem. The car had driven perfectly. My son could have been driving my car and does not have a lot of driving experience. We use the interstate all of the time and I keep thinking how I could have been in heavy traffic when this happened. Please note that I have researched this problem and have come across many forums where people are saying the exact same thing happened to them and they were in a Ford Fusion Hybrid! a car should not suddenly lose its brakes! the dealership says two electric modules went out in the abs system and it's $1,000 to fix them. They also said there may be a hydraulic problem but "we won't know until we replace the modules". I still can't believe I had no brakes in an instant! this should be a recall.

While driving away from my curbside parking spot to go to work, the dashboard lights started flashing and said something along the lines of "break system failure" or "check break systems", and I was unable to brake at all. I managed to change course and pull over and let the car stop on its own. Once stopped, I turned the car off and then back on again. I tried to slowly move and then brake, at which time the brakes were successful and stopped the car. I drove the short distance back to my house and took an alternate vehicle. This is incredibly concerning considering I carry my wife and three children in it and we frequently take long road trips to see family. Had this happened on one of those trips, especially while driving long distances on freeways that tend to bottleneck, the results could have been devastating, not just for us but also others.

According to Ford car needs hcu unit and ecu. Just had the car fully serviced and new brakes all around. Tires are new as well. Ford wants $3000 to replace the hcu and ecu and drain the brake fluid. I think I'm gonna have to scrap the car.

As I was driving into a parking lot, the brakes felt like they wouldn't work and the warning light and bell went on, but ultimately the car stopped, but I had to press brake pedal to the floor hard to stop the car. I had the car towed to midas. They said it was an electronic or computer problem and suggested I take it to a dealer. I then had it towed to saybrook Ford. They diagnosed replacing ecu and hcu, even though the car didn't demonstrate the problem to them. I found on line a technical service bulletin from Ford (TSB-09-22-11) and a brake system update specified by Ford's customer satisfaction program 10b13. When I told the Ford dealer, he stated there is no recall on the brakes. I explained to him again, but he was not interested in hearing about this. I called the national Ford office and spoke with someone who suggested I contact you. Consumer reports said if the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid was built before October 17, 2009, the dealer should perform the brake system software update. My car was built on April 22, 2009 according to Ford, but they said my car wasn't covered. I am complaining to you as my car has the exact problem stated in 10b13. Please help. Thank you. While driving 65mph on a back road leaving harris CO. My car started to speed up without me pressing the paddle and when I pushed the brakes I had to push it several times before it would work and slow down the car. It pretty much made us jerk forward when the brakes started to work. I have never had this happen until Wednesday oct. 24, 2018 and don't know who to contact. I had my daughter and niece in the car coming from my son football game. That was scary and I hope it don't happen again.

Moderate speed, stepped on brake, no response. Stomped on brake for no discernible response. Dash lights came on. Had to use handbrake or emergency brake to stop. Dealer diagnosed and replaced abs unit. There was an open NHTSA investigation that described my problem exactly and blames a stuck valve in the abs controller. Apparently there was a coating that gets sticky from brake fluid. Ford should be required to pay for and fix this serious safety defect.

While moving on a dry, asphalt, city road, approaching a stop sign, the brake pedal was depressed, but the brakes did not engage at all. The emergency brake was applied to stop vehicle. Then slowly moving forward and retesting brakes produced the same result. Then turned off ignition and restarted ignition. Then normal braking function returned. Took car to a mechanic and no corrective taken (everything tested ok). Incidentally, left front and rear tires were recently swapped. So tread wear was different between left and right tires on each axle.

My breaks in my 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid stopped working a couple seconds after starting the car (along with a beeping alert and display on dashboard to check breaks). Fortunately I was in a parking lot and going at a slow speed. I was able to pull to the side and stop. I turned the vehicle off. When turning the vehicle back on the alerts were gone and breaks worked. I had the breaks checked and was told they were fine. About a month went past, I was coming to a stop at a light on a city street and my breaks suddenly went out (along with an alert display of check breaks). Luckily no cars were in front of me so I was able to make a right turn and pull to the side until my car came to a complete stop. I turned the car off and on and breaks again worked fine and all warning lights off. With plans to take the vehicle to the Ford dealer after work I parked. After about 8 hours with the vehicle being off I returned to my car. I turned on the vehicle and the break alert was back and I had no functional breaks. This time when I continued to turn the car on and off the alert did not go away and the breaks did not return.
