The automatic gear shifter has a rubber mat under the metal plate with the prndl gears listed. It is difficult to shift out of p and then you reach r and d the mat has bunched up so much that the metal plate telling you what gear you're in pops off. This is an extreme hazard, as I back into the road and then to put it in d, not knowing where d is because the plate pops off, I could be hit. I also have a 2005 Ford five hundred experiencing the same problem. I called Ford and they acted as if there were no previous issues. This is certainly not true. This will cause an accident or fatality.

The contact owns a 1996 Ford Taurus. The contact has experienced minor shifting failure. The vehicle would not properly shift into park. Occasionally, when the vehicle was started, it failed to move. When the vehicle is placed into park and the contact's foot is removed from the brake pedal, the vehicle begins to roll backwards. In addition, the vehicle shifts out of first gear very hard, and the engine revs up to 3,000 rpms. A transmission flush was performed, which stopped the failure. Nhtsa campaign id numbers 96v086000 and 96v166000 (powertrain:automatic transmission: gear position indication (prndl)) were referenced. The current and failure mileages were 113,000.

Vehicle does not go all the way into park. Prndl indicates park, but vehicle still moves. Wife placed car in reverse, then realized a kids bike was behind her, pulled forward, placed vehicle in park , got out , and vehicle began rolling backward. She was dragged, and almost badly injured when the open door caught on another vehicle. Approximately 2 weeks later I parked vehicle , placed it in park at supermarket parking lot and vehicle began rolling backwards again.

I had rented a 2004 Ford Taurus from enterprise rent-a-car. I needed to get some things out of another car to put into the rental car. I put the Taurus into drive and pulled forward to the other car. I placed the car in park, opened the door, took my foot off the brake and started to get out. After I had both feet on the ground and was standing up, the car began to roll backward. I fell to the ground while holding on to the door and was dragged a few feet. I managed to roll away from the car. The car rolled back to the original parking spot and hit a guard rail and another car.
Vehicle was off and in the park position and collided into a vehicle and pole, consumer states 1996 and 1997 Ford Taurus vehicles were recalled because of this problem, 96v166.

While trying to shift out of park gears would lock up. Problem was intermittent. Contacted dealership. Mechanic gave no indication of how problem could be corrected. Informed owner's manual would give a suggestion on how to correct locking up of gears.
